Two Yamaha DT 250 Mx genuine one, its very nice. I am looking to buy one, But the stakes are high.
The bike is Mint $7800
This one is a race bike $5000
Are they worth this much, or am I waiting my money, what do you think. Its a lot money for a Dt
-
DT2MX?
$5k for a race bike is very questionable - apparently they're not that good as a race bike, and there's plenty of better race bikes available for that sort of money. Possibly worth it if you have a passion for them and the bike is properly set-up. The other way to look at it is that a good MX250 is a ~$2000 bike and they're better than the DT2MX - is there $3k of collectability for the older bike?
Mint one at $7800 would have to be 100% original, IMO. Even then, you'd have a long hard think about whether you're buying it because you love it (excellent choice), or because you think it is some sort of investment (bad idea). Its not 2008 anymore...

I sold you one under a year ago Dave..You should have kept it, you'd have restored that bike and be already racing it for a lot less than 5K you want to pay for the bike you're talking about. I've recently bought another DT2MX for $200 and no....I'm not selling you this one Dave. ;D
-
Buy em Dave. He who hesitates is lost! J
-
Mark, That bike I bought off you is nearly restore, I think thats great, don`t you.

I was looking at thwe DT250 mx first model today, its really nice, But its a lot money which I done have, just seeking your opinions. and TM Bill you did ask me to start another thread.
-
ill sell you a 74 mx 360A for $2200. or a TM250 for $2500, lot of change there to restore them.
The Dt2mx is never wortht 5K never mind 8K
-
Fair play to you Dave :) do you have any pics ? I passed a super original DT2 MX 1 owner ex canada but now in NZ bike for $nz 2k about 10 yrs ago ::)
The bike really was super original but was missing one side panel and had not done a lot of work. He couldn't sell it for years ::) a mate now owns it .
It was one of those should have deals ;D

Yeah Dave I'm really glad it's soon to be reborn but my point is that if you didn't change your mind so often and had kept that bike you wouldn't be looking to spend crazy money for a DT2MX today.
apparently they're not that good as a race bike,
You're right Nathan, in stock trim the DT2MX is just another so-so early Japanese motocrosser, a bit like a TM Suzuki in that while they're not all that flash is stock trim, they're pretty good fodder to be turned into a competitive racer with a bit of lateral thinking towards modification.
The DT2MX features the penultimate version of the old DT1 based "small case" engine. Even though YZ250A/B experts will cry "no way", the DT2MX isn't that far off the YZ's state of tune. Sure it hasn't got the fancy nancy lightweight gearbox and clutch basket but it does have close ratios and the bulletproof clutch all early Yamahas are noted for, even if it's a smidgey heavier. The cylinder can easily be ported to YZ specs or even further, the same reed block is used as the YZ so the same replacement modern design reeds can be used. Add a 36mm Mikuni and a more modern pipe and you're in the ballpark horsepower wise.
Chassis wise the DT2MX isn't that far off the planet. Sure it's a bit heavier than the YZ but the geometry is fairly similar. Yamaha had noted what the period hot rodders were doing to the DT1 frame by lowering the engine cradle and lengthening the swingarm so they designed a frame utilising those dimensions. The forks are as close as buggery to YZ specs it's not worth noting, the only major difference being the slight weight saving from the skimmed down fork legs on the YZ. The front and rear wheels feature identical hubs and mud catcher DID rims and even though the YZ featured the improved Thermal Flow shocks, they were still pretty ordinary and would have been replaced years ago.
The only other part that would be seen to be less quality is the DT2MX's steel tank compared to the nifty alloy item on the YZ. Everything else from cables and levers through to the handlebars and grips are so similar as not to be of any consequence. I seriously consider the DT2MX to potentially be a better bike than the later MX250 and if modified properly, as good as the YZ as a race bike.
As a collectors item the YZ250A/B has a cult following that demands serious money but in actual fact, the DT2MX is a far rarer bike having only been around for a very short production run. It was Yamaha's first production motocross bike not based off the existing trail bike and for a first up effort was a well equipped and physically beautiful piece of kit. An interesting side benefit of the DT2MX being such a one off bike is the unusually high availability of NOS parts, mainly because most of the parts are one model only fare, for instance the 'no-name' smooth outside engine cases, kick starter, cylinder, head and many other parts are commonly available on eBay because they were only used on a short production run bike that sold poorly and isn't popular with restorers. Complete NOS transmissions or individual ratios are commonly seen on eBay for sensible dough. The only difficult to obtain parts are the unique to the model side number plates which due to inadequate mounting tabs were often lost. I've had three DT2MX's and none of them had the left side number plate. Because of the rarity these are the only parts that get serious money.
I've got a DT2MX that I paid a paltry $200 for on the water at the moment. I originally bought it as a parts donor for my Hindall but I decided that because it's all there and being so rare I'll give it a long term concourse resto.

Thanks Iain, that's handy to know. Because my new DT2MX is missing the original tank, mudguards and side panels I've been searching eBay and the Swapmeet for original items. I was lucky enough to find a straight, original tank and pristine front and rear mudguards from a guy on Marks Swapmeet. I'd purchased something that had nothing to do with DT2MX and as I always do, asked him if he had any other stuff coming up for sale. He then revealed that he was a restorer who concentrated purely on pre '75 era twin shock Yamahas and the DT2MX/RT2MX in particular. He sold me those parts for silly money and told me that when the bike gets here to do an inventory of what's needed and he'll try and supply the missing or broken parts from his stash.
It was a great example of the VMX global village in action.
As far as the question you asked me in your PM mate, If I do decide, you'll be the first cab off the rank! ;)

your talking about 3 differant bikes here, yes i have some RT360 but your also talkikng about differant periods in this thread. IF you want a 1mx pre reed then yes your still too pricey and yes it is pre 70, the DT2mx that firkos talking about is reed so its not pre 70 its pre 75. Just before you try and race it and it all goes pair shaped. So are you after a DT1mx or a later Dt2mx or just a 360 for you mate and what does he wan tit for ? if he is doing pre75 then he may as well by my MX360A

Hey Guys !!!
I've still got too many toys.
I've got a DT1MX,RT2MX,DT2MX YZ 360B motor,MX250B converted to a twin shock Flat Tracker and a MX400B,YZ250B & YZ360B still Motocrossers but converted to twin shock. We can't run Monoshocks in Pre 75 here in Texas.
I'll let them all go as a package or individually.
I also have a XS650 Rickman that Pete Lee just raced Flat Track over here recently. It was originally built as a MXer and I have all that stuff too.
Plus plenty of DT/RT/YZA/B parts.Also 3 PDV's 250 & 360 too.
Let me know.

Hi Freaky,
If you buy the new Just bikes in colour you will see the Dt1 250 mx for sale for $7950 which I feel is a Very nice bike but too much for me, I was looking at a DT1 mx pre 70 Yamaha just out of curiosity.
I think that they would become a low budget bike for pre70 class, and I wanted to get everybodys opinion on them, thats why this forum is so good most members will give you an honest opinion.
Now about the RT1 360 freaky, one of our club memebers in the CSC here in victoria asked me last week that he would like to buy this model could I find him one ( so I am asking around. This member already races a YZ250A, and currantly restoring the DT2mx model the one I got of Mark Firkin. This mate races a RT360 and I feel that he would like one to restore and add to collection.

I'm starting to get confused now. I don't know where all of this other stuff fits in. Dave asked about a DT2MX and that's what we're discussing. What is an RT360 Dave? Are you talking about a black tanked RT1 or an RT360MX? All of this "I'll sell you my???" is confusing the issue. Do you want a pre '75 or Pre '70 bike Dave? If you want a DT2MX stick to the plan and forget the other stuff.

Hi Mark, this thread is not about me, the fellow in our club comes from timboo here in Victoria he is the fellow that is looking for a Yamaha the same model as his 250, the 360 model with the silver tank and black stripe.
