Great mag again but disapointed with small article on C/Dirt ( I know it means more down under than to overseas readers) and small photos dont do it for me,what do folk think?
-
FWIW IMO it should be a Premier article with large pictures considering that we all boasted and applauded at how large the Classic Dirt meeting was during rider briefing. :)
Aussie Mag, Aussie Meeting. Simple formula? Maybe not - depends who pays the most on the advertising space. :-\
-
yes i too was dissapointed by the write up, i didn't make it this year so was looking forward to it.

I hate to bag VMX magazine, but I too am a bit underwhelmed by the coverage and layout of Australia's premier VMX event. I would not mind seeing large coverage of any major VMX event world wide in the magazine as long as there is pleanty of high quality photo's and commentary. I would assume that the cost of the extra pages in the magazine would be compensated by more sales and more advertisers. I hope that this is recognised and addressed with the next issue covering the 2011 Vets MXDN at Farleigh castle.

thanks for the feedback…

As Jeff said already, thanks for the feedback. As I've also mentioned previously, I'm always keen to discuss your thoughts on the magazine and I'm always here, on 02 9452 1444 or [email protected]
Every article in every issue is a balancing act - some Aussie readers think there's too much US content, some US readers think there's too much Aussie content, some UK readers think there's too much......and on it goes. That's before you get onto how one person wants more pre '75 coverage while another wants less and on that story goes as well.
Classic Dirt has always been hard to capture in print, being more of a social ride day rather than a National event or big race meeting. The best way to experience it is to attend, without wanting to sound trite! If we have big photos, say half a page, and run say six pages on the event, you might get ten photos in total, would that be enough to get a feel for the event? Adding extra pages to the magazine is I'm afraid totally unrealistic as there is not a great pool of advertisers just sitting out there waiting to give us their money. Advertising is extremely difficult to obtain in the current economic climate and has been for the last three years (well, it always is actually, just even harder in the last few years - a number of bike magazines around the world have folded in the last few years). Expecting extra sales is also totally unrealistic, it just wouldn't happen. So adding pages to the magazine would, without a doubt, cause nothing but pain.
Who pays the advertising space? I'm not entirely sure what that even means in the context of Classic Dirt coverage. As I said, I'm here, give me a ring or email and I'm happy to discuss.
So again, thanks, we're listening.
Ken - VMX Magazine

Yeah I had a re read of the Classic Dirt coverage last night and can see Ken's point.
Like a lot of VMX events, unless you are actually there it doesn't translate to film that well. The photos of the formerly famous just look like a bunch of old guys standing about comparing facial hair.... maybe less slightly larger photos.
I think that issue rocked, my favourite in a long time as far as actual bikes we would kill to own content went, just jammed packed with beautiful VMX bikes.....

Covering Classic Dirt adequately is a tough one. It's very hard to translate the amazing vibe from such an event into four pages. Other than dedicating a whole issue to the event, as Roger Harvey did so successfully last year with his terrific picture book covering CD7, it's near impossible to squeeze everything in without sacrificing the rest of the mags content. I'm not in love with the small photo layout either but when you consider the thousands of photos Ken has to go through, I can't think of a better way of covering it. Other than that, the isue is a ripper.....Dave T and Jackie Mac did a great job filling the void in my missing the DT Nats and Chris Malam did a great job on the event that's up top of my bucket list, the Red Marley Hillclimb.
Bikewise, I really enjoyed the CCM and Works replica hot rod bike article but the piece on the Hedlund/Albin DOHC conversion was what grabbed this old history buff. When I saw "The Jones Collection" in the contents page my immediate thought was that our old mate Alan Jones had opened up his impressive collection to the world...but it was a different but equally impressive Jones Collection ;D

im sure the mag just feeds the follows ( the buyers who pay) so whereever the most copies sell thats where the content will come from you would think.

If that were the case it would be chockers with U.S content. Just with the sheer number of people there. I think a heap of the smaller photos is a smart idea. Maybe a little bigger and sacrifice a couple. The weekend was a bit quieter when the rain set in. Not much happened on Sunday to report on. I did miss the big kerfuffle with some loud mouth carrying on like a two bob watch over a generator on Saturday night though. I was too busy having a laugh with the majority.

Firko,
My logic for doing it that way was to allow as many of the punters who attended to see themselves in print. It is certainly not perfect and the feedback is noted and appreciated.

Classic Dirt spread? I still haven't got past the beautiful CCM piece...

I am just taking delivery of my first Kindle ;D for $139, which means that I can look forward to a copy of VMX with 60 pages of attached photo files per issue arriving for a $5.99 subscription per year in the future.
Cuts the printers and distributers out of the loop and means a magazine can focus on content. Could be the way forward.

My copy is 'round at the paper shop I asked the man to grab a copy and put it in a bag for me to pick up after next sundays dirt track at Nepean.
[Making sure I don't come up short of $ for the day].Hope to see lots of you lot there!
cheers pancho

My two bobs worth. Whenever I flick back through my VMX mags I'm always drawn to Issue 23 and the coverage of CD3. The obvious attraction of Jim and Brad aside I thought the layout was spot on with the mix of photos (size) and dialogue. I emphasise no disrespect to subsequent offerings. Cheers Jerry PS and it's not just because it was in Victoria!!!!

Happy with the coverage from the Tight Arse Race Team perspective ;D
-
Got my copy today, aquired a friendly $50 for not much effort. Got the mag plus a chateau cardboard and a little bit of change.
-
OK, it appears that we didn't quite get it right with the CD8 report :'( , sorry about that everyone! We'll try to do better in future. ;D
So if you would like to see a few more photos, please check this out:

Wally, you're speaking in tongues again. :o
Must've been a good drop?
-
I like the coverage of events wherever they are -- but only so long as there are a few good clear photos showing neat/unusual bikes that we otherwise would not see -- to me the attraction of "lookin' round the world" is seeing what I would not see here.
-
Hey slides, I drink nothing but the cheapest! doesn't take much!.
Any how BE THERE SUNDAY!
cheers pancho.

Will there be any video footage or photo's floating around for sale at some stage?

I'm pretty sure Bill Forsyth has put a CD8 photo compilation CD together as he did for CD7, I'm just not sure if he's distributing it through VMX magazine or by himself. Perhaps Ken, Ajay or Jeff can enlarge on that. ???
-
At this stage we are not planning to do a CD8 Photo Disc. The request above is the one and only request we have heard of and it's more than 3 months since the event now.
The CD7 photo disc didn't rush off the shelves... ;D
-
I thought the mag was it's usual great self.....how bout some centerfold posters boy's ;D.....Ray use to do it..... 8)
-
I reckon that CCM is as close as your gunna get to a centrefold without being R rated ! any more like that they will have to put the mag in a plastic bag :P
-
I reckon putting out a CD/DVD/phone app! every year would be taken up by a large number for keepsake.
The mag has to try and please everyone or we run the risk of being viewed as too parochial from the OS punters. I would like to pull out a disc etc in years to come and enjoy it over a few bevvies. All time and $ I suppose. What was the Picture Book take-up from Billy F's effort?
-
how about a c/d each year with the mag like other magazines do>
