Hi Guys,
I have a old Maico MC250 that I want to restore, It has frame number 392963 and Engine number U277555.
I have tried to cross reference with the Maico model codes, but I am a bit confussed with this combination!
Can someone please help me in Identifying this model and year? does it seem like it has a frame and a engine from different year models.
It does have a radial cylinder head & barrel.
Thanks for all help.
Bruiser.

Here is some pics, If I work this out!
The Frame number on the compliance plate is the same as what is stamped on the steering head of the frame!
Does any one please know what year it may be???

Hi Paul,
Thanks. I did work out that the engine was a 73 model, but the frame number did not match that same year or anywhere around it.
The frame doesn't show any signs of modification by owners. I may have been done at the factory?
The frame numbering is a bit of a puzzle to me. That is why I am trying to determine if it is a 73 or a 74 &1/2?

The frame looks to be a 1973 produced LTR (Long Travel Rear)frame. Reportedly when the Yanks (Wheelsmith & another shop almost simultaneously) developed the forward mounted rear end and the decision was made to release it to the public in late '73, the Maico factory had a large stock of 'old school' frames that had become instantly obsolete. The decision was made to re-engineer those frames and air boxes in house to use up the backlog. These LTR bikes hit the streets at the end of 1973 and according to Blair Harley, he had them on the floor in early '74.
The so-called 74 1/2 model used the first of the purpose built LTR frames with a slightly different rear subframe, different gusseting and a totally different airbox and came out in the latter part of '74. My dough is on the bike being a late '73 MC250 (but sold as a '74)
Note different airbox, shock mount gusseting on this '74.5 Maico.

Well, maybe when they were stamping my frame it was during "Octoberfest" and they had a few too many drinks... or they were suffering a very bad hangover and got the frame number wrong!
The frame number (392963) on my bike according to http://www.vintagemaicos.com/motorcodes.htm is for a 1989 MC500?

Hi Paul,
That frame looks similar, except mine has a bend in the frame tube that runs from top shock mount to swing arm pivot.
Thanks,
