One thing I don't like with the RM125A/B is the way the stock muffler doesn't follow the frame angles :-\ it sort of droops down and spoils the lines..it's not as though I'm picking on these NZ jobs which look ultra flash but unfortunately still droopy :P I maybe picky but it gave me the shits so much I re-bent the stinger on mine so as the muffler runs parallel with the frame tube. It maybe how they come from the factory but it looks wrong and only seems to apply to the 125's.
-
I agree with you 100% there Doc......just looks crapola.
-
You know, for the life of me, I don't why someone can't start making original replica's. Once I make a dye to form the tin it'll be a piece of piss to weld it up and paint it black. Half the allure of an original bike are those stock mufflers. Once I've knocked a couple up I'll post the pics.
-
I have been told that the XT500 mufflers made new in NZ dont look right aswell (they should try and make a good copy) I say :P
Nothing worse than that DROOPee look doc :o
-
Just does'nt look right does it?.
cheers Dale.
-
The GMC one is straight and it wouldnt take much to have those alloy jobbies (which look horn) fixed up ....redo that bracket.

Totally agree with you John and with Chris regarding the angle of the damn muffler :D.
I often walk up to my bike and stare at the muffler and love the look of it...BUT....that bloody angle just pisses me off.
I just accept thats what Suzuki gave us and i sleep better after that. ;D
Cheers Mario

That is a sweet C Mario 8) In regards to the muffler, I found I was losing too much sleep because of it, the drugs had stopped working and I just had to rectify things to save myself ::)
-

I can think of one good reason....they don't pass strict modern noise regulations. What's the point of replicating something that can't be used on a race bike?
-
Even the RCM one is down a bit, but i know if you actually ask and mention it, he will consider making it just how you like though. I would guess there is a reason why a lot of them angle down though. It does look close at the back.

I'm with you Doc....things like that just eat away at you...and your right Firko, too loud and the packing lasts about 20 minutes.

And what percentage of restored motocrossers are raced.

That picture shows just how easy it would be to correct LW, and that muffler does absolutly nothing for me, looks like a chinka replicka :o.....shit thats a scary thought....people copying chinka's...it will probably happen too one day.
-
I struggled with this on my KTM , I chose a nice DG oval muffler only to find that even thou I was making the exhaust pipe once it cleared the shock movement It was 50mm higher than I wanted , It’s the one thing that piss me off more than anything on this build , I did think about moving the shock mount even. I guess that’s why the brackets and stuff look like shit I just felt beaten, I hope I can return thou.
-
Pissed me off enough that i had to fix it on mine.

You realize you wont sleep tonight now Slakey, you will need councilling and a long period of rest.....it may be easier if I come around and pick up the aformentioned problem and take it out of your life or maybe we need to do an exorcisum? ;D

Yea, thats not bad mArc, at least it lines up with the tank line....almost. ;D
-
Move it back Slakey.
-
its like trying to buy 3 pieces of plastic that are all the same color, finally you just learn to live with it.

I think the whole idea of the alloy mufflers is to get you a re-packable muffler and to add a bit of bling. Of course people restoring a bike to OEM specs is going to hunt down a original or make a replica of one. For people who just want to ride, these aftermarket ones are a lot more practical.
That picture shows just how easy it would be to correct LW, and that muffler does absolutly nothing for me, looks like a chinka replicka .....shit thats a scary thought....people copying chinka's...it will probably happen too one day.
Well its actually a close copy of a Bassett from 1978. Details are in the link i posted on the other page.
-
i made these mufflers to fit a stock RM just as suzuki made them,or they won't fit or melt the air box like alot of RM ABC s.black paint makes them look smaller.they are still loud but better than a NOS one i had on the bike.
-
Yes Chris, I agree, the angle is not just a simple fix such as a shorter bracket. I found I had to cut and shut the stinger pipe to re-route maintaining original stinger length otherwise simply moving the pipe would have it hit the airbox. It's not the muffler that's the problem it's the pipe ;)
-
Theres a simple fix buy a yammie ;D
-
Lose the hose clamp and tack on a couple of loops to hold springs. Adjust the muffler tab so it mounts to the seat mount and paint it black. Whinge whinge !
-
what hose clamp? the original pic shows it mounted to the seat mount and it doesn't look much different.
-
My post was a bit late. I was looking at a photo that had the clamp!
-
ah okay, now I see what you mean ;)
-
Gmc pipe and muffler. Not a great pic though.

-
Dont you just hate it when these "novice's" start putting up photo's of their bikes.....bloody show-off's ;D
-
I still see the same issue Brad (or lack of issue depending on perspective) everything else looks stupendously wonderful but the muffler no matter how bling or bland still needs to follow the lines of the seat to fit the picture in my veiw. No doubt not everyone has the same veiw ;)
It's only a minor change but to me it makes the world of difference :-\ this is almost getting as bad as the footpeg saga ::)

The problem every manufacturer here has is that the chambers and mufflers have to be interchangeable with originals and other brands.
If you jig the chamber to suit the original muffler you end up with the same droop.
I think I did change the stinger on mine a bit to lessen the droop but from memory the stinger tube comes close to the frame tube / shock / side cover.
Reasonable clearance from these must also be considered.
-
It's just the dodgy tiler that fitted that one Geoff....mines straight as an arrow...he just needs to move the bracket up.
-
Hey Goeff whats your contact details and could post a picture of your muffler for a 1977 rm125b.
-
Sweet swingarm knew my notion of applying a little gold to mine was heading in the right direction. 8)
