Title: Coming soon to a showground near you - the most fun on a dirtbike. Ever
Post by: Graeme M on August 24, 2011, 10:22:27 pm
Yep, the annual HEAVEN stoush at Canowindra is just over a month away! To be held over the first weekend in October at Canowindra, NSW, you'd have to be nuts to miss it if you are anywhere within cooee. How good is this event? A fun grasstrack laid out in the local showgrounds, in the middle of town, with covered pits and catering on hand, and a huge helping of 'feel good' vibes. It just doesn't come any betterer than this one. This event is the only other Must Do on my calendar after Classic Dirt, so of course I'll be there again this year. I hope you can too.

More info soon.

Definately one for the TT Mick. Great track, great people , fantastic atmosphere, close racing what more could you want. The whole weekend has a great social, friendly, family feel to it and Greg always makes sure that everyone is welcome in "his" town. Where else do you get to race your VMX bike in the middle of a town? I will be there for sure. Arrive friday, set up, few quiet beverages with  other members that I only get to see at each race meeting, can't wait.
But dont forget that Canberra , now EVO Challenge is on before hand.

I am guessing the entry form will be out after Canberra this weekend? Leaves it a little late given entries usually need to be in a week before the event, so I guess we'll have to get onto it asap after the forms are available. And yes, I hope it's the same format with the age races etc on Saturday - that's just so much fun. Fingers crossed for the weather this year too...

The Knob on the handlebars determines how fast they go.

Just call me "Gunna", this is yet another event I'd love to attend but apparently I'll be selfish if I do.
I have no doubt you'll all have a blast, I'm in for next year.

I just have to say this again. If you are anywhere within a reasonable driving distance of Canowindra, you just have to come along. The track is fun and fairly easy in the sense that there are no huge jumps or anything, but it IS usually very close racing. The real bonus is that you will be racing INSIDE a showground. What more could you want? Add in covered pits (if you are quick enough), great facilities, a covered grandstand to watch from, and well, it really is special.

Here are a couple of photos of the venue from a year or two back.

ENTRIES CAN BE DONE ON DAY
Pre entry is the best way to go,  but are one event licenses available for those that enter on the day?
Title: Re: Coming soon to a showground near you - the most fun on a dirtbike. Ever
Post by: Dan-166 on September 16, 2011, 11:02:31 am
One day licence is available. For those going to Canberra this weekend, there will be entry forms available at the sign on table. So if you can, fill your entry form in whilst at Canberra round which will help ease conjestion on the day at Canowindra.

Bring the family and they can watch you race from the grandstand.
Have a read of this article from Motorsport Retro.
As a kid, one of my dreams would have been to peg out a one kilometre motocross track in the middle of an oval and rip it to shreds with my motocross mates. It seems Canowindra local and VMX enthusiast Greg Holmes shared that dream. However he went one better and made it happen. Not only did he manage to convince the town that using their beloved showground for a motorcorss race was a good idea, he persuaded them to get right behind the event with local business donating time, money and tasty local produce to put on the best VMX event one could imagine.(http://i947.photobucket.com/albums/ad318/rtb1042/Image00022.jpg)

If you can't make it to Canowindra then you can read the full report at http://www.motorsportretro.com/2010/10/photo-gallery-heaven-vmx-canowindra-cup-october-2nd/

Who knows with the weather? Forecast looks OK-ish - worst of the weather should be south of us and blow through by Friday. They reckon maybe a shower or two Saturday and dry Sunday. With luck the system might end up further south than they think, so I reckon check the forecast around Wed/Thursday to really know how it'll go.

Looking forward to it, I've even pressed the poor old IT175 into service to get some extra rides...

The more I look at this thread the more fun this event  look's. Definately wont make it this year but is for sure on the hit list. For those that have competed can you give the rest of us woody's an idea of what works best on the rear.  It has been asked on a previous post I know but I would just like hear KNOBBY or TRIALS UNIVERSAL. Maybe the promoters have a preference and i would like to that as well.

Have we made 100 entries yet Greg,  have to be close 8)
Dirt track tire vs nobb may be safe to take a spare wheel with a dirt track tire on it ,if you have a spare wheel handy, depends on track condition wet or dry.
But i cant comment to much i havent rode there before

To be honest I wouldn't take the risk. A knobby will work fine in wet or dry. Hopefully, rock hard 6 year old knobbies work OK too, cos that's what's on the IT...

Be good if we crack the 100, but doesn't matter too much. As long as we have some nice big fields in those age races it'll all be good. Maybe I just don't get the whole capacity class thing, but I way prefer all in races on tracks that level the playing field. I remember last year as I worked my way round the track thinking how cool it was to be mixing it up on the 125 with some old Yammie MX thing AND a great big Brit thumper. You don't get that every day! AND... there's a rubber band start. How cool is that?

You'll crack the 100 mark for entries Grega for sure. I reckon you will get at least 10-15 on the day. I think last year we ended up with about 20 on the day. I just feel sorry for those that can't make this unique event. :( :(. They just don't know what they are missing.
Two more sleeps. See ya tomorrow Grega for a clensing ale ( or 2,or 3, or ..........? )
Don't forget for those going, to watch out for the local law enforcement who will be out on the roads around Canowindra, guarenteed.

Do you think they'll still run the ACT day with all the rain Pat? Anyway the Canberra Cup is only 2 weeks away.

Just had a text from Greg, only 15mm of rain so far, looking good,
As far as juniors go we cater for 12 to 16 year olds. You would have to ask the MA officials at the end of the day.
There is a lot of land around there you could also ride on.

Rgds

just had tea with the Heaven gang at the track. If you aren't here then you will miss out big time.

For those who have second thoughts about the weather then just man up and get your backside trackside.

Track is all set out and ready to go.

Don't forget you can still enter tomorrow morning so pack your bags and load the bikes and make your way to Canowindra.

Sunday night footy final on the big screen at the Golf Club, all welcome.

Too rooted to type much, but it was awesome.  8)

Rained yesterday (Sat) and it was crazy slick. Today started off slick, but ended up great.

Damo took home the Canowindra Cup, again.

Had two Greg Norman moments on the YZ125X - lead one race for a bit and then freaked out and dropped to second. Then crashed while in second in the next race...  :P Worst bit was not being able to get up before Snowy a) saw me and b) got past...  :-[ .....  :D

Marty/the mud blew up my MX250.

The KDX had weird brake issues - jamming on for no apparent reason, etc. Still fun to ride, though.

Massive thanks to Greg and the crew for making it happen - particularly in the rain yesterday.
Also thanks to Noel and Pete for the ride on your bikes, to Greg for the make-shift sump-plug and to Shaun for the boots after I forgot mine...

I loved the slipping and sliding on sat ,I had a few get offs but no broken body bits
The rain made it more fun 8)

Wow - maybe this event never happened?
Maybe Mick25 and I just spent the weekend taking illegal substances, and we imagined the whole thing... maaaaan?!
Maybe we imagined nearly another 100 riders being there?

It did happen!  And was a blast.  After having been in the non-HEAVEN wilderness for the last three years, it was terrific to see such a vibrant, upbeat gathering of old and new faces.  Such a great informal raceday atmosphere!  I had a ball on my new vintage steed (TT250) Saturday, a great evening at the presentation in the woolshed Sat night, nice civilised overnight at the salubrious Riverview Motel with Mr McGelligott, and was all set for a bundle of heaven races Sunday when loudish engine noises spoilt the fun.  Mr Muck (as in Muckelligott) kindly thrust his able (and reliable) IT175 at me, which I took to a very competent mid-pack finish in all powers (this was late morning, when the mud was still mushy enough not to rut, but firm enough grip after some nice backwheel steering out of each corner - nice).  I retired on the strength of that, and was home and showered with hot din dins in front of me by six pm.  How good is that?

- engine noise was just stator plate screw rattling round between flywheel and plate, not valve dumped into top of piston - also nice
- apologies to mr myers, who's kato's ignition got shorted from my mud roost while i was going for it in the 40-49 yr old class Saturday....(not realising that, being on the wrong side of 50, my class was still waiting patiently on the start line.......oh well....was a great dice, that race.....just no points.....)

Yes, there was a vintage race at Canowindra. As always a fantastic job by the organisers and everyone else who helped on the day. The track was great, let down only by the wet weather but from what I could see plenty of people still had a ball. The presentation and dinner Saturday night was fantastic, especially getting dessert.

Sunday dawned clearish and sunny though it did cloud over, fortunately the rain held off and the track by all accounts scrubbed up perfectly by the afternoon.

On the whole I think it all went off just brilliantly. Bring on next year!
