Title: Shipping Methods From US to Oz
Post by: Tahitian_Red on August 17, 2011, 03:28:44 pm
I know it's been talked about it in the past, but currently what is the best method for shipping bike parts from the US to Australia?

Ships are better for shipping than boats
Don't take any notice of the smart arses Jay ::) and they wonder why they don't get taken seriously ???.

It depends on the size and weight of the parts. Things like engines and frames are better off being shipped by sea otherwise it becomes way too expensive. Stuff like pipes can often be cut in half and rewelded on this end to get under the mail size constraints. Wheels, tyres are ...I've shipped 'em both ways and in the end it comes down to a time versus cost deal. It all depends on how badly you need the part.
What are you considering shipping?

Depends what it is and if you can get the bits disassembled and have stuff like oil drained. I have had mono shocks (no spring though)in a couple of flat rate envelopes and a YZ490 bottom end in 2 large flat rate boxes. Just depends on if you can get guys in the USA to help you out with packing stuff well. For the usual small ebay stuff or what ever USPS is by far the best. I also had a suzuki expansion chamber wrapped in bubble wrap and sent by USPS for about $43US. I could not believe how cheap it was. it was about 18months ago so price may have gone up now but our exchange rate is so good still that the prices is still probably good anyway.

If you buy something,  say on Ebay and get the person to just go down to the post office..there is no more "surface mail" ...only air mail.... surface was really good in the "early" days..took 3 months to get here... but was cheap.....I had a 450 Husky engine sent out for $74.00 some years ago...buy not any more..that sort of thing will cost a packet now....because it will come air mail..... Most guys in the US only want to be able to trundle down to the post office and off she goes....

It did no harm Trev but the bloke wanted a serious answer not a smart arse response. The best thing about this forum is the combined knowledge of its members, that's why Jay asked here for a solution to his problem.  I know you were trying to be funny but that's the kind of stuff that drives people elsewhere. ::)

He contacted me offline and I advised him on how I'd have a set of forks sent so all's sorted.

Just arrived from the US a Greeves dirt track frame. The sender wrapped it in some shrinkwrap and sent it using USPS it cost me just over $200 and it arrived 9 days later.  I know by ship is cheaper but I couldn't wait the 3 months to get it.

Worms,

No problem, I appreciated the humor.  ;D

Brad,

Robin might be the option, since I already know where to drop things off.  ;)

Firko,

I will check my email.  Thanks!  :)

I currently have a complete rear wheel coming from the US which cost me $200(AU) via USPS. I asked a couple of the ebay sellers to quote me a price to send via surface mail, but said they would not send anything surface mail as there is not a way to satisfactorily track the item.
