Project YZ125J
Well CD8 got me thinking. Its time to drag the 125j out of the back of the shed and start work if Im going to make CD9.
I bought this bike over 2 years ago and have yet done nothing.Where to start? How far do I go?At this early stage I am looking for some advise on parts .Some of the usual to start with.
1.Plastics?
2.foot pegs
3Pipe? ( possible)
4.Do I powder coat frame or paint?
5.fuel tank .Do I clean or paint?
The bike is currently a runner and I dont have any major mechanical issues. I want the bike to look nice but do not want to be affraid of getting it dirty a few times a year.It needs good clean up and check over.

1.Plastics? DC, NOS or find some resonable second hand ones and polish / paint - not many other choices
2.foot pegs - Chinese Wide ones - under $30 look for PW50. They use the same springs and pins. Bolt 'em straight on ;)
3Pipe? ( possible) - DG is about the only choice pretty well priced - otherwise look for a good used one - getting harder to find :-\
4.Do I powder coat frame or paint? - many threads on here debating this one ::) Do a search and spend hours reading ;D (I would paint - $3 rattle cans for easy repair on a race bike)
5.fuel tank .Do I clean or paint? If you are going to put fuel in it I would sand / polish it.
Just my opinions there - I'm sure someone will correct me ;D ;D
Just do me a favour and don't paint the hubs in gloss :o :o

Thanks 250H
I promise not to do hubs in gloss!! lol
Ive just looked up DC plastics. I havent talked to Yamaha dealer to see if any new parts are still avaliable.I do have a good std pipe on the bike currently.Just thinking of DG or similiar for a little bling/performance.
Yes I will have fuel in bike but not looking forward to sanding polishing tank as it has gone v/yellow

Yamaha dealers still have a few bits for them. I think you can still buy NOS F and R guards, but they are for 250/490. Not sure if they are the same off the top of my head.
Join the club on the tank thing - everyone is pretty much in the same boat :(
As far as other bits and pieces go try :
www.nwvcp.com and www.yamatopdog.com. Both very releiable and they have a heap of stuff. Just don't buy all of their stock as I still have a 125J project to finish ;D ;D
Look here for inspiration WMC has done an awesome job 8)

hmm yes his 125j is very nice

Plastics are all NLA apart from the front guard so it's DC or eBay searching I've got a DC rear guard on mine it's OK but it's a bit orange pealy.
Chinese foot pegs are good and cheap only hassle is the kickstart hits the peg because of the extra width but it's nice having wide pegs.
I found a NOS pipe on eBay but fork it took a lot of finding! DG is the only affordable option that I know of.
I prefer paint to Powdercoat unless the powdercoat is very thin but its a personal thing.
As for painted plastic I wouldn't unless you have no choice. You can never get all the yellow staining out but they come up good ( after a lot of hard work) I found Mothers plastic polish works great to get the shine back.
As for parts I use

Whoops hit the wrong button dam iPhones
As I was saying I use http://www.boats.net/ or Thumpertalks oem store both are a least half the price of Yamaha aust but in saying that some parts are cheap thru the local dealer like front guards and sprockets.
Keep us posted on you're progress
