Phillistine ...... you can eat my Storz  :D .... anyways XR1000 is quite rare, exclusive and the closest thing you will get to a factory Harley race bike in that price bracket. Real mans bike that will put hair on your chest.

Don't listen to the knockers Marc. XR750 Harleys have more racing pedigree than almost everything that is ever written about on this forum.
I'm sure that there wouldn't be any more highly developed 2 valve engines in the world.
I love them.
Cheers, Grahame

Yeah don't worry Bill's bikes racing pedigree's were mostly presented at Crufts.

One of the guys I know in Tokyo has an ex Springsteen XR750, it snaps off the throttle like a top fuel dragster, seriously you would need balls of cast iron to wring it around an oval. Most people don't realise just how hard HD engines can go with the right head carb and pipe.

I saw Jay Springsteen riding one at the Redcliffe showground about 10 years ago and it ran like a backfiring Massey Ferguson on 1 cylinder with a shit load of noise and no go!

If you're thinking what I'm thinking, I certainly would rather ride that version 8). A lightweight, lean, mean thrashing machine by the looks.;) ;D

Yes I rode a very similar model for a couple of years, exceedingly good performance but very very high maintenance, finally I decided it was probably faulty from the factory and traded on a different brand and newer model.  ;D

The price of 25-30K NZD is pretty much ball park for what you would expect to pay for XR1000. It was only produced briefly in 83/84, production run was not much more than a couple of hundred. Was not famous for its reliability ..... 67 hp but could be kitted to get 100hp.

I saw Jay Springstien ride the XR750 at Bankstown a few years ago and it was no back firing ratly slouch. It was VERY impressive cheers pancho.

Here's a shot of Springer on the XR, Exhibition Park, Canberra 1994 or there-abouts

Springer riding the cushion and up it for the rent

It was one of Ivan Maugers meetings in 1994 I think, there were a few XR Harleys there , with some visiting Yanks, plus some V twin Honda things that looked a bit strange.
Did say G'day to Springer that day, what a gentleman , great to have a yarn with , took piccies and got autographs, and if ya reckon he's one of my heroes, ya right.
The XR sounded great and went like a dog shot in the bum !!

I nearly bought an 18 month old stock XR1000 in 1985. It was only $6500 with less than 2000km. I didn't buy it because it really went no better than a stock Sportster and it felt odd with the high up exhausts. If you let go of the handlebars and stood over the seat it would fall to the left. I was disappointed that it looked like the racers but was just a compromised Sportster, same 4 speed gearbox and suspension. All the same I wish I did buy it and keep it. Collectables don't have to be perfect.
Cheers, Grahame.

We looked into building an XR engine to put in a motocross outfit as a way of getting some more "fans" to come and watch but to build an engine to 'spec' HD put you in touch with a suitable dealer and then you have to come up with the neddies that they ask to build the engine-apparently you can't just buy the 'makings' and do it yourself. approx cost 20K plus.

Only 20K, hell at least they didn't ask you to gain 20K, become a prospect and get branded .... I could never understand how Mert had no tattoos

You would of been better off to go to an S&S dealer and buy all the parts and put together a better, cheaper, higher performance engine.

Very good point the S&S sporty engine can get 120hp albeit with 1400cc, you would probably get change out of 15K

Yeah I think people don't appreciate what great potential the Sportster engine has, ideal for side car use.

not too sure about that as they are heavier than the XS650 and bigger all over I think.
the pick of the crop if you can find one is the GR650 Suzuki-20 more hp standard and heaps lighter. more techy shit as well.

The standard Sporty motor wont really handle racing conditions.  One of the blokes from Heavy duty magazine was racing one in the roaring sporty's series and got tired of rebuilding the motor and was looking to go S&S.

Robie hermans 883 was good runner for a few seasons. I think he only had 2 bikes for the duration of his few years running the national series.
RIP Robie
