Hey guys. I have picked up a KX125, and it is either an 1980 or 1981 A6 or A7.
My dilemma is - Which model is it??? It has no seat or tank (the seat is about the only way I can tell from the colour of the KX lettering!!)
I read somewhere that the 81 models had some "trick" alloy bits and maybe a frame gusset somewhere, but what were they exactly?
Please if any of you KX'perts can assist It would be appreciated! :)

I to have a 125 but mine is an A6. We have previously covered this and it might be useful. Here's the link http://ozvmx.com/community/index.php?topic=15902.0

It appears I have a 1981 KX125 A7 then.... (it has that triangular piece on the head tube area...)
That's my next resto project.... ;D ;D

Is this the dirt cheap one from Epay?
My A7 has alloy footpegs. I don't know for sure, but I've always assumed they were one of the differences.
-
Yeah thats the one... $51 was my winning bid ;D :o ;D
Doesnt have alloy footpegs.... but everything else indicates its an '81 ... ???

Maaaate that is a stunner 8)can we get a look at the other side ;D
Are they nightmare plastics ? and how did you get the tank to come up so good .
-
Yeah mate they are Nightmare racing plastics. Mark makes the best KX green around.
That tank .... man .... when I got it, it was mostly white and looking crappy.
That is the result of about 6 hours of running from 320grit right through to 12000 grit wet and dry.
All hand wet-sanded. Thats how I have done many tanks now. It's easy as, just takes about 20 beers ;D
I will take some piccies of the other side and throw them up soon.
:)
-
Wow that's nice! $51 ...... does it really matter how much it is to start with? ;-) Motorcycles are a baaaad drug!
-
Awesome 8)

Great job on one of the prettiest bikes ever. I'm bit by bit restoring an IT tank the same way Hardo did so I know how much effort went into his tank, let alone the rest of the bike. I shudder to recall that we cut one of these up back in the 90's to trick up a KLX because that model KX would never be legal for vintage. I guess we get wiser with age ::)
-
beautiful :-* I'm green with envy
-
WOW.
Great job on the KX, she came up a treat. they are a beautiful looking Model

It's such a good job, it really is!Do you have any before shots? Why anyone would want a basket case I'll never know ???
-
Ando..... this bike was a basket case when I started. :o
I picked it up in about 4 boxes and was missing tank, seat and carby.
That's how I like starting them ! ;D
-
Actually when I picked it up from old mate after winning it on ebay, he told me that he works at a metal scrap yard and thats how he came across it... it was actually dumped !! :o :o :o
He told me that he actually salvaged parts of it over 3 separate days.... one day the frame and wheels rolled in, another day there was most of an engine, and a few days later in rolled the exhaust and a few other bits....
It truly was saved ! :)

Its a very sexy unit!

A brilliant job on the restoration Hardo, full credit to you. One question are the Nightmare Racing plastics injection moulded? and how close is the shape to original. I have recently been gathering alot of Nos parts in preparation to start the restoration.
