Thought forum members might like to see the fruits of the past 9 months spare time in the garage with my 1982 430 XC. Problem is she wont light up...yet! It has spark - thanks to Steve at Betta Bikes for breathing life back into the Motoplat mini 6. It has fuel - the carby is the 38mm Mikuni.
What are the tricks of the trade to start these beasts? Does swearing at it help?
All dressed up but nowhere to go!

Nice resto PezBerg!
If it doesn't start it'll be the Paris Hilton of VMX - looks hot but does nuthin...

Too bloody true Wombat! ::)
Pushed it down the hill in my street a few times and it is still refusing to fire. It definitely has spark just not a super fat spark. I can smell fuel so its going into the engine. The virgin NGK B8ES plug definitely smells of fuel. I have fresh Shell V Power fuel and running 32:1 Castrol synthetic premix.
I'm too damn knackered currently to continue with it so I've made it stand in the corner of the garage in disgrace while I have a few beers :'(
I need some ideas for next steps. I can double check the timing but I would have thought it would still fire or backfire or something even if the timing was a bit out. Is there anything in the carb worth checking? Any ideas anyone? ???

Your problem is probably the forkING WORTHLESS PIECE OF SHIT NGK PULG I went through three of the expensive "Iridium"? plugs on my YZ465 before it fired up, then it refused to run after an initial warm up. I put in a battered old chapion N3 copper plus and it started second kick and did so until I sold it. I've said it before and I will say it again NGK are forking RUBBISH

i know how you feel pezberg...i went for my first ever ride on my Honda CR500RF today at a local enduro/mx track...it was really wet and muddy but i was haven a good time that was until i stalled it a few times and the prick woudnt start...had to push it about half a mile away in the slosh and mud just to run start her on the hard pack road..not once but a couple a times this happened..yer i reckon ive lost about 5kgs after today and a bit pissed off too... >:(

Does swearing at it help?
Works everytime - only prob is that you have to swear in Swedish with the correct pronounciation, accent and hand actions ::)
;D ;D ;D :D :D :D ;D ;D ;D
Nice resto BTW.

im impressed, how the hell did you manage to bump start it, they usually just lock the rear wheel (unless you can get lots of speed, like down a hill)
-
I unfortunately have to agree with Cyclegod - tried to start my 360 with a brand new NGK BR9EGV and no go at all whatever - put an old NGK plug in from my other bike and fired in 3 kicks - oh by the way no spark showed on the new plug!!!!

hoony it started pretty easy on the hard pack road in secong gear..mind you the hill i was goin down was pretty steep and i had to pick a spot which was dry and stoney plus hard packed...another funny part of the day was when it was gettin late and i went out for one last lap and my brother followed me on his xr600... went through this gully which was pretty rutted out was takin it easy cause i didnt wanna roost him, next minute you know hes rammed me from behind and sent me on my arse beside the gully and kept on ridin up on the gully were he stopped and just looked around and laughed his guts out...do you think i could get that 500 started after that no way...had to get a couple of blokes to push me out..and the brother still wouldnt help...flamin prick... ;D

Hey, its part of the job description for brothers ;D I bet he was rolling about laughing at ya - thats part of the job description as well ;D.
Ya can pick ya friends but not ya family :D

Cyclegod of the universe speak to me. ;) What plugs are worthy of thee? If NGK stands for No Good Kicking then I'll certainly give something else a go! ;D ;D ;D

Did you get it going, I just purchased a 81 CR430 that has a similar problem, it took a few hours, a few heads and a spare bottom coil and flywheel to sought mine out.
It is the bottom coil that is faulty, it shows a dull spark but would not fire, its a SEM system on mine, can you send details on who rewound your coil.

Old Husky
Still no go. Been using bigger hills but to no avail!
I had the stator repaired by Betta Bikes. They go it sparking again after replacing the trigger coil. However I have just discovered today (after asking Steve at Betta about my problem) that it is firing 90 degree too late. Steve said to check it with a timing light and sure enough the timings way out. No wonder it wont start and only farts - I here I was thinking that is was a Swedish habbit.
I wonder if the blue and black wires have been swapped by mistake...would that cause the 90 degree error? I will have to wait till Monday to ask Betta Bikes but if someone knows here I could change the wires this weekend and get it running maybe! The tabs are different sizes so you can plug them in wrong at the coil.
BTW I found the fancy Xenon timing lights that need a 12V power supply wouldnt trigger for me on the Husky when kicking the beast over (without the plug fitted to the head of course). Decided to blow $20 and try an el cheapo neon timing light from Supercheap Autos and it worked great. Shit light (a dull red) but it works The light simply connects between the sparkplug lead and the plug itself. Need to shut the garage up and turn off the lights to see the light however!
Whatdayareckon?

Why can't you rotate the bottom coil around to correct the 90 degree issue, timing should be about 2.5 mm BTDC, other than that its over my head this electrical stuff, 67 Husky should be able to help you on this one, he's a sparkie, he will probably see this and reply, good luck!!
-
I dont have a flywheel puller so I cant try the rotation of the stator just now. Been trying to find one but with no sucess yet. I thought when I had it repaired and I had spark that it was safe to put the flywheel back on torque it up!
BTW does anyone know the thread needed for the Motoplat mini 6 puller? I reckon its a 27mm x 1.5mm thread but cant find a puller anywhere on eBay or elsewhere that matches that. Everyone sells 27mm x 1 mm. Can someone confirm.
Cheers
-
Fernando sells them and will probably have them in stock, try Husky Parts or check out the web site.
-
I bought a Motoplat puller and it is inscribed 27 x 1.25, if you get snookered get in touch and you can borrow it. Really want to see this thing going, mate ! ;)
-
Yeah me to GD66! Thanks for the offer of a loan.
I've scored a loan from Baronvmx of a puller while I wait for Fernando to supply me one for the toolbox. I think it might come in handy in the future!
Steve from Betta Bikes says he needs the stator back as it the trigger coil must be wound in reverse and needs to be redone. Apparently this can happen sometimes.
One more week :-\ Cheers
-
Steve at Betta Bikes had to redo his Motoplat rewind job. Had wound the trigger coil in reverse apparently. Anyway he's fixed it and it is now firing at the right time - 17 degrees BTDC. Roll on the Easter weekend and I'll see if it'll run - cant wait.
BTW Motoplat mini 6 flywheels use a 26mm x 1.5mm puller.

Got it going at last....thank christ for that. ;D ;D ;D Shit its fast....probably try and spit me off on the track!
Ran really well up and down my street (even better when I remembered to turn the choke off) but out of consideration for the neighbours turned it off after 5 minutes - its slightly louder than a lawn mower!
Went to restart it after putting my riding gear on and no go. No spark at all! Couldnt believe it. ??? ??? ??? Tested it with a multimeter and it seems the charge coils are faulty - trigger coil is fine. After cursing and vowing to splash out and buy a f'ing PVL I resigned myself to shagging around pulling the ignition off again I found the wires out the back of the Motoplat are dodgy and tidied them up (cut the stray strands off etc and put some liquid insulation goo in there) and its got spark back. :-\ :-\ For how long who knows. Currently waiting for the liquid insulating goo to dry and I'll refit and try to fire it up again. ???
Would people recommend PVL or MzB ignitions....MzB has lights and a bigger flywheel. I want to ride both VMX and trails. Thats assuming the Motoplat gets the heave. What are PVL's like for trail riding?

You're a patient man Pezberg.
Golfers are known to hurl the sticks into the lake or over a cliff with less aggravation!
-
Yeah Wombat ..... as they say Patience is a virgin. Except I have been f'd around real good here! :'( Makes an electric start modern seem real attractive.
I like your boots - Alpine Stars? I've restored my 1980 Sidis - red with the yellow rubber shin pads. One day I'll get to wear em! ::)
-
Yep, I bought them for $50 at a 'Cash Converters' about four years ago; pale grey and scuffed up - never having had a visit from the nugget fairy (see the left one).
I wasn't even into bikes at the time, but I recognised a classic and stuck 'em in the shed as ya do.
Unfortunately I can't get them to do up over the modern CTi knee guards, damn it!
On the Sidis - for racing back in the dreamtime I had the blue jobbies with the yellow rubber shin pads. Damn fine boots and I sold them to pay the rent many years ago :'(.
-
Ah CTi knee braces...nice. Back in the day we never heard of knee braces and armour was for pro's only. In fact used to race in jeans and a woolen bush shirt...but it was NZ! The only scars I have are all from enduro racing on my old PE's so I guess it wasnt such a good idea the lack of protection back then. Now as I approach my dotage I have knee guards, real riding pants and shirt and am currently sizing up full body armour. The body sure dont bounce back like it used to...in facts sags a bit here and there!
-
That's good Pez, but IS IT GOING ? Did the tidy-up work, and are you sitting back with a silly grin, in the knowledge that within your garage lurks a goer ? ;)
-
Yes indeed GD66 the beast runs at last! Only had a few quick runs around the block to check it out and heat soak. VHT expansion paint fumes are filling the garage after each run!
Motoplat mini 6 ignition was the problem all along and now its fixed. ;D FWIW the rotor magnet that triggers the pulsar coil is quite long and covers almost 90 degrees of arc. With the pulsar coil rewound the wrong way the ignition triggered when the long magnets trailing edge went past the pick up rather than the leading edge as it is supposed to. Hence spark fired 90 degrees too late on the exhaust stroke and it wouldnt run - hindsight is brilliant..but at the time it was definitely WTF?
Next stop QVMX club days! :D
-
Good stuff mate, been a bit of a nailbiter, eh ? All good now though, enjoy !
-
ive fitted MZB ignitons to Jawas before they are good quality and well built. it was good when the german curency was sill around as they worked out extremly cheap when we imported them but now its gone to euros and costs a lot more
