Title: DR 500.
Post by: Curly3 on May 30, 2011, 08:39:57 pm
I recently tested a DR 500 engine that had been raced on Road Racing in QLD.
I scored it on ebay with no idea what had been done to it.
After stripping it down, short of splitting the cases, I found that both the balancer shafts had been removed along with the kick start shaft, complete.
The ports have been opened up a fare bit and the compression has been increased, no idea what ratio and it didn't have a carb on it so I have no idea if it had been run on Methanol.
I fitted stronger valve springs and used my standard carb with plus 10% main jet.
What a difference from a standard engine, rough down low but once it hits peak revs the vibe goes and pulls like a train.
I have to sort the jetting out but its a huge improvement.
Unfortunately the first chance I get to compare it with the pace setting big bore Yam's & Honda's will be at the DT titles in Bris next month.
I'll keep you posted.

I know it doesn't sound as exciting or exotic as a pre 75 or the Holy Grail pre 65, but I a Zook guy and I'd love to get one to give the TT/XT & XR bikes a decent run for their money.
I've got a pre65 project on the go but am relying on others to be able to move ahead.
