Should I be using some sort of thread tape or sealant?

Loctite pipe sealant and careful of that thread, I would seal it that way you don't need to even think about over tightening it.

If your talking about putting your fuel tap on the 125X Pauly, dont even think of any sort of tape or sealant.....the threads too fine and unless you have welded a new one on before you painted it you had better hope it's OK....I have new fuel spigots if your in the shit....make sure the sealing washer is OK.

Paul, loctite master gasket 515 is the go and will seal up to 10 thou.

Had some roof and gutter silicone left over from work on friday so i'll see how that goes

It will work great if the bike runs on water.... Most non-fuel-specific sealants soften and swell in contact with petrol. Household stuff particularly.

Was going to say that the silicone won't work on fuel you can bet the fuel would be about as strong as silicone cleaner if not stronger there would be some special silastic for use on fuel don't just use ordinary silicone.

Did that when I was younger Mainline.
Spent all day pulling it out of the float bowl , had used it on the gasket. Duhh
Ya gotta learn somehow. ;D

Turns out the silicone had gone off in the tube, so I used no-more-gaps :-D

I have used Loctite 515 on fuel taps many times before. i dont know what tank you have but if its japanese, they normally have a rubber gasket that sits inside the nut that has a left hand thread at one end and a right hand thread at the other and you dont really need sealant or thread tape.

I agree that the threads shouldn't be sealing anything. Its either a washer or some type of compression fitting that does the sealing. No need to use any thread sealer.

thanks all, i didn't actually use gutter silicone (or no-more-gaps) just bored and thought i'd post it up and see if I'd get a bite ;D
I went with Stu's 515 gasket idea, cause I already had some, and the spigot on the tank had been shortened slightly due to previous damage. I also put a nice new rubber seal in between the tap and tank and everything seems swish.
If, however, you notice a fireball/plume of smoke from the pre78 track at CD8, that'd be me. (thanks heaps Stu ::) ;D)
