Nice work tony ,was this a IT conversion or was it just the engine ?. Cause i have a IT465H at home that i'm thinking of turning into my EVO  bike .

That is a nice looking Yamaha. Judging by the swingarm i'm guessing it was an IT? Is that a 250 tank fitted?

Nice one Tony B.  Certainly a good way to get an excellent 465.
You have got me thinking now  ::)
Cheers

super nice Tony!
since i'll get to see it in action at some stage throughout the year, would you like me to count the red things behind you?

Thanks for the offer to count the guys behind me Mike but i think if i raced as fast as my mouth I would be ahead, ha ha well i can dream can't I. Truth is I have lost some confidence since my big bang last June, and my shoulder is still not right (but my surgeons boat and house in Bulimba is) anyway I hope to get back into it soon. Yes this was my IT , so the only IT stuff still left now is:
Frame, swingarm
barrel, piston
1st gear
4th gear
airbox
chain tensioner
lighting coil

I tried the yz 490 barrel and it's shithouse, the it 465 barrel with YZ pipe is an excellent combo and has proved on more than one occasion to stay easily with other 490's. Its got smooth large power low down and a very healthy mid range (with the yz pipe) with good over rev ( if needed). There is a lot of stuffing around to get pipe and side covers to fit and be mounted, but at the end of the day its not a bad way to own a yz465, as there are many IT465's around. The yz pipe I first tried was the DG unit and it was nice, but just for kicks I am trying the YZ490 retro rocket pipe on the IT barrel, I am keen to see how that performs. Maybe Lozza will tell me what might happen?

What plastics did you use ? And what frame mods did you have to make .Is that a yz front end ?.thanks Hilly.

yzhilly, I used extreme yz in USA - Scott. really good reproductions. . Frame mod was easy, just cut off the mudgaurd loop.. Forks are 490L 43mm dual leading shoe $50 from wreckers !!

Hi guys just a Honda man slumming it down the alphabet to see what is happening. Good looking bike Tony do like the yellow over the white but the competion from the Honda's will always have you in the red!!!!

I am most impressed by your comment about the missus you must have balls of steel to back that up!!

careful TonyB, after your initial comment about the Mrs, steel or not you may just lose them all together.

very nice looking bike, I'm new to this era so I wouldn't have picked it as a conversion from an IT.

This might be a stupid question, but are all the IT's able to converted with the same sort of mods? It seems their prices are well down in comparison to a similar vintage and capacity YZ that would still need replacement plastics and other work done to it.

Post by: TonyB on February 15, 2008, 08:11:01 pm
mainline, yes any it465 is capable of being a yz like this, and as you say if you are going to resto a tatty example you will replace plastics anyway...

Thanks for the nice comments, Pipe is holding up ok, but I should have given it 2 or 3 heat cycles before takin git onto a sandy grassy track as the paint, even after 1 week got tacky when hot. Its settes down now and stays hard, heh heh heh... but the damage is already done. It is still a much more effective method than oiling it every time?? It has also discoloured to a bronzy colour but it looks good. leathers have worn some off when cornering too.

nuther shot... the white shit on the one side of the pipe is the residue that seems to stay forever after a race at Nudgee, those that have ridden that track will know what I mean, its a barstard to get off.

Tony,
That stuff is real abrasive, it will pit your plastic after a while, gives everything a sandblasted finish.
Not sure what it is though.

Looks good Tony.  You've certainly proved that the VHt clear works.  Good news for heaps of us.  Way easier than oiling the thing everytime.  Thanks for sharing  ;D

now i'm gonna be a little bit of a smart arse here,
but refering back to my earlier post on page 1, where i offered to count the 'red things' behind you, remember that one Tony? so at the last bmcc club day, i had that very opportunity to 'go a countin' and MAN! that bike was sooo fast he was about to lap em! even on the first lap! cause i think it was 3 red bikes that you were about to lap but couldn't quite do.
lucky theres no red maico's in my 125 class, just them silver thingies on methenol.

Vandy I gave the buggers a chance on Sunday heh heh heh NOT, mmm i'm sure   ::)  my yellow thing can beat the red things, shit maybe i need a good rider now. The first 3 races were a disaster for me, they were the first three since my 6 months of hell from the last big prang, so i found it difficult to mix with the pack, but I pushed the memories aside on the last race with 250 and 500 together I was sitting 3rd behind the red thing number 9 (christ he's quick) and a YZ 400 on the first lap then the back wheel went down and I continued for another 2 laps with the back end all over the place , tyre is now rooted...

Tony, hmmm you noticed... my one outing to date (the Nudgee practice day) was a real wake up; I had no idea how badly I would ride after all these years. I expected to be rusty - but faaark! As keen as I am to compete (in a non sheep station way) I really must get some practice in!
Apart from being physically exhausted after only a few laps, I felt really wobbly and uncoordinated through all the corners. What happens to 'power slides' and berm shots capabilities? I remember the feeling but the ability is out the window. I felt like an absolute beginner - or a learner at best.
I seriously need some practice; maybe some 'around the barrel' racing in the back paddock just to get the feel of the rear wheel letting go; and not backing off the moment the front wheel gets a bit of air. I'm too much of a gumby right now to get in the way of a thundering herd of wide eyed old VMXers.
I've been invited to chip in a few dollars to hire the Nudgee flat track in a few weeks time.
A few people will be there for a day of practice. I'll be slow at that too - but I reckon it's all good practice. I'm sure all (or most) will come back to me - but right now it feels like the first time I tried to snow ski!!

Wombat You really should'nt worry about it, its just good fun with a bunch of ol farts, no ones gonna rag you , hell you might not even be last, but who cares what position you had its just all in a days fun. QVMX is quite relaxed, and the blokes will give you heaps of support (even if you ride the wrong colour bikes :D) you will be amazed at how quickly you get into it. Actually what some guys do is wait for everyone to roar off the start and the launch off later at a more sedate pace, and that eases them into it.

Is that some 4-wheeled motorsport experience that I can smell?

TonyB's last post is one of the best posts ever, um... posted.
