Light Engineering shop in China
Wanted: enterprising mechanically minded young man to work in China for minimum 1 year developing race cars and other machinery. Standard small engineering practices, machinery use and lateral thinking apply – no tickets required but intelligence is! Previous experience in engineering or mechanical workshop please.
This is a great chance to live and learn another culture as well as another language. Salary will be paid at Chinese level for Westerners ensuring your stay to be quite comfortable. Housing will be provided and all work meals. Air flights will be paid for one way after the first months work, return after 6 months standard work performance.
This is a small personal 6 year old company led by an Australian and there is further opportunity for a person that shows tenacity and sharpness combined with management skills.
I mentioned young bloke but the age isn't an issue but the wage expectations would be. I will pay double the local wage which is great here but by Oz standards is shit and theres no way you would be able to send any worthwhile money home or have anything at the end of a stint.
More a working holiday for a young bloke who might be living at home who wants to see the world, learn some skills, have a bit of fun etc. and not be out of pocket. I don't see it being financially viable for someone older.
China is a developing, very modern, very safe and fun place to be right now so try expanding your horizons!
Please email [email protected]

Take me back 30 years and I'd jump at it.
Sounds exciting for a young bloke, I'm sure you'll have heaps of interest.

Maybe you should read the OP again, I just worry the financial situation won't suit an older guy. You'll have enough money while here, quite comfortable in fact but your pockets will be bare when you go back home.
I'm offering 1000RMB per week in pocket (about double the locals) which is around the same buying power here as having $1000 per week in pocket in Oz.

Sounds like a heap of fun. :)
Dare I mention the food ;D
Probably doesn,t matter anyhow because that,s all you will be able to buy here in the near future. ;)

Yup, Maccas and KFC are shit but you can go to the Chinese restaurants if you want and get world famous Sichuan spicy food (some people recognize Szechuan).

As much as like Asian , but after a week I need some proper bread , cheese, meat and a good red . we now have Foodland in Bangkok with all the european goodies and makes it bearable . Do you have shops like that in China yet?
With the speed that China is/has dveloped I'm not surprised people don't understand - it's no different to Oz in most cities here, shits me actually because I enjoy more traditional China and live in a smaller city for that. We have Walmart in my city (as well as the mentioned Maccas and KFC) besides the Chinese brands of Western Supermarkets.
I don't know what people imagine China is like but my Mum and Dad are coming over here in July for their first visit and Mum said "I'm not using a squat toilet" so I sent her pictures of our squat toilet, my rickshaw heavily disguised as a white Mazda 6 and the students red band assembly area/missile launch site cover also heavily disguised as a tennis court ....

Was meant as a bit of a laugh.
Well I thought it was funny. :)

Yes I did and it is a genuine concern when you have a developing country and give uneducated farmers chemicals without training. May be a laff but when they did they same in Southern Spain after the irrigation program opened up vegetable farming in the desert areas, they killed quite a number of people with poisoned tomatoes in Northern cities as a direct result of untrained farmers using too many chemicals.
Do they have bars with the night life that goes along ;) ?
Of course, a big city is just a big city anywhere in the world - my smaller city is a quiet one though which I happen to like.
-
Walter dont worry about the bars and Lady Boys its nearly time for C/D 8
-
i will be in Prag then for Faltas party
Good on you W. Have you been to Prague before? Any other Aussies going?
-
I did liked the exchange rate then , panty hoses where the best currency then . 8)
The speedway boys use to take Levi jeans and jean jackets in and Bohemian crystal (and Jawa spares) out ;) 8) - so I'm told :P.

I think that would still work in Thailand but make sure they have extra room in front.

Has this position been filled?

Hope you mean the job and not the giving of pantyhose..
Have only had it around for 12 hours and I'm not one to grab the first applicant, I'll give it a few days or maybe a week.
-
I did liked the exchange rate then , panty hoses where the best currency then . 8) I want take any with me this time :D
When was that and what was the rate. Aus to Czech has been around 17 or 18 Koruna since the first time that I went there 21 years ago.
-
I think it was 1988 , dont remember Koruna rate , because that meant nothing to us at the time . This time it should be all Euro (and PD valves for the lads :D).
Now back to China , Cheapracer still needs to tell me what to bring to China when I com to visit .
Leave your sense of humour at home you won,t be needing it. ;D
-
Reveived an invitation to EICMA China today , is that worth going Cheapracer ?
I always keep my humor Mike 52 where ever I go . Some places I visit ones only and some again and again :D .
Probably yeah, I'm guessing I'll be asked to meet some people there, if so I'll let you know and we can do something and any VMX'er is welcome over here. .
I'm a bit worried about the dates though, I'm flying a bunch of my family over for my birthday the same week and I'm not sure which day they actually arrive, may clash.
-

Oh yes for a young gentleman you will not be starved for company.... ::)

Been thinking about visiting China for while. Is that show trade only or open to all visitors.

is there a Klub Kevlar mermaid bar there?

I blame the culture shock that Aussies experience on city planning, the 3rd world is only one street away in China, so the contrast in how people live is right in your face. I was living at one point in an apartment in Dalian that looked like the lobby of the Hyatt only bigger, but outside the security were people killing ducks to order and welding on the foot path.

It's awesome, still see the strangest things everyday but it is changing quite fast.

Would be public, too many and too hard to invite specific people.
Drop over anytime and I'll show you around, any VMX'er is welcome anytime.

Well so far no good. Apparently if I pay a $1000 per day, supply a Porsche with mandatory whores and a 2 hour week living in a penthouse I may get an interest.
I not only would have jumped at a chance like this at 21 I in fact did similar even if it was only Melbourne to Canberra and with no pay and I slept in my car for a bit to begin with.

the problem you have is some some mining companies are almost offering that ...
I remember when I was apprenticed you learn't half your skills keeping your car going and the guy who owned our company had one of 2 new cars in town, the other was the mayors. These days its hard to find parking amongst the apprentices new Clubsports and WRXs.

Remember it's an international labour market these days and you have to compete against the Germans as much as anyone else.

Wonder what I’m doing wrong?
Maybe I don’t charge enough!!

Yep Alison but best to tell people it costs around...$350 a bloody day... to rent a basic three bedroom house in Places like Karratha. Dampier, Port Hedland etc ;) Oh and a standard Chicken parmagania at the local pub ...$76....Silly really on Saturday my daughter (A flight attendent with a certain Australian flagship airline) makes my entire 9 hours day (at weekend rate,_ wage in 52 minutes..... ::)
-

So I've heard as well as that Victorian Desalination project.
But those guys will still be working for somebody else 8 till 5, 48 weeks a year in 20 years time as many of my teenage mates still do - got to see the bigger picture if you can't see that then you're not suitable anyway.
-
Yep and the last 3 mining booms in Australia have ended up with massive inflation and the whole lot imploding so enjoy your $76 chicken for now.

German Guy I know locally wants me to help him push his bamboo and straw "Easyblocks" to those areas. Can build houses in a 1/10 the time and 1/4 the cost with them apparently.

I'm not interested but if anyone else is he will talk to you.

He has the applicable ratings but you just touched on why I'm not interested. I've built an extension on a previous house, put up large sheds and bought and moved a complete house from suburbs to my rural block of land where the wind factor was a higher grade.
That was all too hard and I couldn't imagine trying to get these done from scratch - no thanks, leave it to someone who knows the ins and outs.

For anyone at crossroads in their life or young enough not to be bogged down yet, a job like this would be a an awesome experience.
I spent a year in Japan 6 years ago and having travelled to China 3 times now for business and holidays, it would be my pick of places to live.
It's amazingly diverse in weather as well as lifestyle, a few hours on the plane can take you from one of the worlds busiest cities, shanghai, which financially appears like any western country, to many places where time seems to have stood still for 500 years.
Whoever takes this up will have a life changing experience. As for girls, if you're youngish and at least average looking you'll feel like a celebrity every day.

Nice write up and you would think so, have a couple of prospects but the response has been underwhelming. They chase money but don't realize even if they don't stay here that the experience on their resume will help them to get better jobs/more money later in life anyway.
As for girls, if you're youngish and at least average looking you'll feel like a celebrity every day.
Indeed, 6 years of it and it hasn't gotten boring yet.
-
Trying to chase money overseas is stupid IMO. Unless you are ridiculously qualified in a corporate job and are posted by your law or accounting firm (for example) to a first world place, it's easier to just work hard back home.
My only regret from Japan was working too much and spending less time seeing the country and meeting its people. I think I saved about $10,000 in the process which was not a scratch on some of the experiences I could have had.
If people realise the time they could have doing something like this they'd be fighting for the position.
Cheapracer, can you provide a bit of info as to what you are doing and where you are?
Sounds a lot more interesting than teaching!

After 12 years of working in Korea, Taiwan and Japan I would tend to agree, if money is your only motivation then at the moment you are better off in Aussie, but it hasn't always been this way. In my case it was more a corporate thing where I wanted to see how far I could go.
-
Marc, what industry are you in?
I know 15 - 25 years ago there was a massive amount of money to be earned in Japan, I knew a few teachers who did a few stints, then managed to buy property in Aus outright.
Some money is there but compared the once in a life time experience you can have (most people won't be able to do this after mortgage, wife and kids), I reckon it's about maximizing the experience.
After over staying my visa the Japanese Government made me wait a month before heading home, that's when I got to see the real Japan, not being able to work allowed me to travel everywhere.
-
is that young bloke in China yet ?
-
If you're young and keen there's no better experience than to work overseas. You might not make the money that was available 20 years ago but the life experience gained outweighs any monetary gains. While I never made all that much money in my eight years overseas, the memories and skills learned will stay with me for the rest of my life.

My 21 yo nephew went from $16.80 per hour putting on roofing iron in Tauranga to $45 and hour plus vehicle doing the same in Perth, I went to OZ for the same reason at the same age.

Like anything times change, in my case I am a company director of a turbocharger manufacturer and earn probably less than a fitter on a gold mine, but not about to swap jobs. As for buying property in Aussie out right .... who can these days

Yeah theres a lot of "English Conversation" teachers here.
I live near Chengdu, Sichuan Province famous for it's fantastic mountains and valleys being the start of the Himalaya's, it's irrigation system built by hand 2000 years ago that couldn't be duplicated today, the Big Buddha, spicy food, stunningly beautiful girls that send you mental and the Giant Pandas of course. Sichuan is most recently known for the 2008 earthquake that killed 100,000 and I went through that.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sichuan
The last 3 years have been mainly spent developing race and sports car prototypes learning along the way what is capable to be built here (notice no one is doing it?). Taken a long time to compliment designs to capabilities, resources and sources and also learning production 101 which is a trade in itself and has taken me by surprise how far removed it is from making one off's.
I am involved with another company who will do the production, they make some pretty interesting stuff such as CIP's and gantry multi axis mills and the CEO of that is actually German University educated Chinese and worked there for a few years as well so the quality level he works at and the knowledge of Western requirements is a great advantage for me. Weird to see a Chinese guy speaking fluent German too especially when his English is the standard "Chinglish"!
-
Very interesting.
I've been to Sichuan, was a beautiful place.
I can't recall whether Lijiang was there, and the Yu Long mountain, went to a few places around that general area. There was a famous lake there too I believe.
Funny you mention the girls, one of the preetiest Chinese girls I know is from there.
Thanks to my business interests I deal a lot with China, have a container full of machinary headinmg over at the moment.
Can't help thinking about all the opportunities their everytime I go, particularly if someone was wise enough to utilise all their benefits (cheap labour, great automation, improving quality of work and materials), with a western design perspective and good quality control as you guys no doubt do.
I wish you well with the race car stuff, sounds like a bloody good idea.
Where can I learn more about it, your welcome to send me a Pm in regards to it.
