Thanks , wasn't sure about the 250D .The 400E will intercahnge but not sure about the issues for pre 78.Would prefer to stay safe with a D model.

Hi Moto
I have the YZ400E frame with the D steel swing arm.
It's nearly ready for competition. According to the Yamaha parts list the only difference between D and the E 400's is the clutch and the arm. In this case I'd argue that the frame numbers doesn't matter as it has all the other relevant parts that make it a D.

I have some bits of YZ 250 D frame but the frame has been cut up.

I repaired some frames a few years ago, a 400 D & a 400 E
Although they look very similar at first glance there is actually a few differences in gussets and bits.
Also if I recall correctly one of them has a lower engine mount under the cases and one doesn’t, can’t remember which one is which.
The 400 D 1W4 bare frame weighed in at 11.6 Kg’s
The 400 E 2X4 bare frame weighed in at 10.3 Kg’s

400 E is 2k8 Geoff . 2X4 is 250 F ,2X5 is 400F. The F's had the lower engine mount and so did the 250 E which was the first model to change to the newer smaller cased engine with the middle mount. 400D =1W4 and 400E = 2K8 are old style no middle mount frames.

Well there you go.
Customer didn’t know what he had. He did swear it was a 400 though so must have had a motor swap at some stage.
Lucky I noted the frame No’s.
