I kinda like the look of the white bike but the red hub/black rim combo on #69 makes me a bit nauseus.

Those 81 490s are fantastic  8) its refreshing to see maico 490s as i remember them back in the day in our local dealers and at the track and believe me there were a lot of them  :)

Most Maico owners down our way didn't mess with them at all save replacing the Cortee cosso shocks for Ohlins  ;) there were no bloody yellow, blue or purple ones and all the ones i see these days have more bling than puff daddy  ::)

Very nice machines , aside from their now legendary performance and handling , IMHO in std trim thet really are a very good looking mototorcycle  ;D

I couldn't agree more Bill. They're a great bike stock but people keep thinking that they can make 'em better by blinging them up. Now, I love a bit of bling myself but some of this non period billet stuff goes way high on my bad taste meter. I read somewhere that Kingadner or one of the old Maico pros reckoned that the alloy swingarms didn't offer as much feel as the stock chro-mo item. I've got two alloy swingarms to suit the '81 490, an original period Thor/Wheelsmith and a Maicos Only replica and they're both heavier than the original steel arm. For that reason (plus the fact that every other 490 seems to have one) we've so far left it off the Klub Kevlar 490 Maico.
All that's needed is a good set of aftermarket shocks (Ohlin/YSS/whatever), PVL ignition, balance the crank to make it smoother and jet the stock Bing correctly and you've got a bike good enough to win anything-anywhere.

I have to agree with Firko and TM Bill, those 81' 490s are just magnificent as they are. Whenever I see one of those Frankenbike abominations or a Maico with some bizarre colour scheme, I just want to puke!

Ahhhh...it was Herb Shmidt not Heinz Kingadner who made the alloy/steel swingarm comparison in my earlier post. He commented that the alloy arms didn't offer any advantage and actually didn't offer as much chassis 'feel'.
