Hi there all,
Picked myself up a basket case '81 IT 465 and dabbling with the idea of making a pseudo quasi YZ 465 out of it....if only in appearance.
Besides the obvious (Blue Plastics, lighting coil, gearing and porting) what other differances are there?
Specifically would the plastics from the YZ of the same year fit onto the IT? And would I be able to make the smaller YZ tank (maybe from a YZ 250) fit?
Here in SA (that would be Saffer Land as opposed to South Australia) we got our Yammies in white so I will be making this a yellow one with greyish opague side panels, gold rims etc.
What say Ye Learned Yamaha Gurus?
Cheers

My IT465H wore some YZ465G plastics for a while.. the tank and seat go straight on.. I'm presuming the sidecovers wouldn't be a straight fit for the mounts though.. and the airbox is different too

I've had YZ250J tank and seat on it too ;)
Cheers!

TonyB did the exact thing you're doing. If you look back through his posts you should find some good info

Thanks ted,
That should help a bit. I am gonna start tackling the rebuild over the weekend - get stuff ready for blasting, painting and plating etc...unless SWAMBO has other plans for me that is
By the way...they invented long pants to hide legs like those in the back ground!

I am doing a resto on a 1983 YZ490(USA version) and parts seem to be easy to access.

Thanks for all the pics and advice fellows.
I brought this bike in biggish chunks ( I never learn a lesson...) . Despite what a seller says it is NEVER all there, parts are ALWAYS missing and just to spice things up a bit assorted bits from other bikes, household applicances are always included to make life a bit more interesting.
Started to pull the bike down into smaller pieces - I can't be arsed to rebuild forks and shocks so those bits of been sent to a mate in Cape Town to re-do in exchange for some bits he needed for his Maico 440 and 490 rebuilds.
I took a bolt cutter to the spokes of both wheels as they (the spokes) were beyond reclamation - luckily I remembered to take a note of the lacing pattern and off set after I only cut the first hub out.. ::)
The frame, foot pegs, brake levers and engine plates will be sent in for blasting and power coating in silver. Yeah I know it should be black but the silver frame looks nice esp with yellow plastics etc. Also decided to have the tripple clamps and head bead blasted and left natural. The barrel and crankcases and clutch cover will be done in a nice black satin finish.
The biggest problem I have at the moment is to decide on a tank...at the moment it's got The huge mo fo blue item which obviously won't do. I fancy the look of the smaller peanut shaped tank- What tank should I be looking to get? A tank from a 1908 - 1982 250 Mx'er? Would it fit with out any hassle? Lastly who could supply one at a cost less than the GDP of a medium sized African country?

Les Richters from Mainly Maico has some nice yzh 250 tanks with boost bottle mounts

Thanks for that Iain. That is precisely the type of tank that I am looking for.
Only question is will it fit onto the IT465 frame? At least without too much swearing that is?
Will get hold of Les though!

Hey Bruno,
Can't help you with the looks cause I ran the blue IT ones on my 465 but I can tell you 2 things that made mine awesome to ride and they are 3" extra in the header pipe and I mounted a nylon roller, now listen carefully, above the chain (as in above the top run) mounted on the upper swingarm quadrant just after the chain comes OFF the rear sprocket.
Doesn't sound like much but that single roller transformed the bike, it near eliminated all the snatch and sudden wheelspin into smooth power delivery and traction by obviously not allowing the chain to be thrown up on overrun between power strokes and on-off throttle applications.
The 3" extra in the header pipe also made the bike more ridable and almost a single speed (3rd gear) bike everywhere, it already had too much power anyway so the loss of 2 or 3hp up top was more than offset by the improved rideablity.
HTH.

An artist I'm not but this gives you the idea anyway.

Now we just need to know how you attached this roller/ mount to the swingarm.

Mate I couldn't even start to count the amount of scotch I have consumed in the last 20 years since then, you got little hope and anyway, I'm a function man, I have no doubt I would have drilled holes in the box tube to mount it but it was a $300 motorbike back then unlike now.
It's a box tube so it's not exactly rocket science but if you genuinely need help I can draw you something up.
