Title: They’re back, the GMC Folding Bike Stand
Post by: GMC on April 20, 2011, 10:12:40 am
A long, long, long, long time ago,
1985 actually, after fancying myself as an entrepreneur and with much encouragement from friends I set about making the world’s greatest MX bike stand.
But instead I came up with these.

An old design which I found room to improve on.
By making the handle fold down they take up very little room in the boot of the car and they were easy to carry with the bike through the pits.

I sold a quite a few dozen back then, I could even be seen at the track taking in so much money that I would lay back, shut my eyes and dream about making frames and expansion chambers

Not long after the lift up stand hit the market.

I always found these to be cumbersome things to use as most of the time you still had to lift the bike over the stand or you had to push these awkward contraptions under the bike before you could hit the lift pedal.
These lift stands I’m sure would be great in the workshop but I always felt too awkward for the pits.
So with the lift stand being the new fad I dropped out of the lucrative stand business and pursued other interests (booze, fast cars, women etc.)

I’ve come a long way since those early days, (moved to Broadford, about 70 Km’s) and so several decades later, and still seeing some of my original stands around the traps, I have been asked by a few to start producing them again, commenting about old classics being photographed on big alloy stands that don’t look right for them.
Stands that are meant for moderns which leave the rear wheel of the old bikes 2 foot in the air, or just the unavailability of decent milk crates has left a vacancy in the market place and so I have decided to over capitalize on this and once again the GMC folding stands are now available.

Now in 2 different heights, to suit different models.
(Considering a 3rd model at 350 high to suit the first generation long travel bikes - feedback welcome)

300mm high - suits early up pipe models up to approx Pre 78 models

400mm high - suits late 70’s long travel bikes up to moderns.

Coming soon 300mm high to suit down pipe models.

I have one prototype for testing, this should be a one size fits all but I won’t know for sure until it’s tried on a few different models
Come and check it out at Broadford on Saturday and bring your bike to test it with.

$88.00 each  (complete with ugly thick powdercoat)
$22.00 flat rate postage anywhere in Aust.

Come and check them out at HBBB

I've just discovered that none of my stands fit my flat track Hindall because of the downpipe so if your sweet looking stand fits you can count me in for one Geoff. See ya on Friday.... ;D

THE poick up points for down pipe bikes will all be differant .  I have made 5 pipes over time and they only fit differant bikes as some you have to pic up the peg mounts other you can get some of the frame and so on  the issue is the pipe cover most of the rear pick up points and leave you with differnat width and angle on differant makers, ie my Suzuki TM is differant to the DT which is differant to the and so it goes on.   What i always though would be a good idea would be to use the u bolt type upper clamps so you dont get stuffed by a too wide a lift point being to wide to slide into the frame are ( see a TM)
This is the best stand i have, i got from the states a few years back and uses a arm with pinch bolts ( so it folds) but also the centre section slides into and out of itself so you can change the carrage width to use it on any bike.  Also the u bolt tops are threaded so you can wind them in or out to make the height you need or to balance out a angled floor etc orframe points.
As you can see it also clear Fat pipes under the frame.

So Thats the go and then you have one model that can truly fit all.  If if i can get to the back of the room ill take a picture and right down the make.  ITS under my YZ in this picture.

I have avoided adjustable versions as it adds a lot of fiddly bits to the fabrication and I feel they may become a bit flimsy.
I have measured a few frame rails on different models and made the top of this stand to suit most rails, although the rubber stole a bit of room from this prototype.
I had also been wondering about those models that have the pipe hard up to the frame rails. But hopefully with a bit of testing on the weekend I will understand better what’s needed.

Orioles Freaky, they’re a US Baseball team
And why are you staring at my nipples

I think you need to be searching out car hoists Tim, allthough could be a bit tricky at the track.
How often do your wheels fall off anyway;D

Will we be seeing you this weekend or will you be stuck working?

Ah yes, the good old days when I was little, funny how I always saw myself as fat back then.

Newry, HK ute & YZ 250 N, one Yamaha that I only mildy hated, the rest that I owned I loathed.

Doesn't look like the planets will align for me in time (still haven't won Tattslotto) so I won't be venturing North for CD8.

Now available in 350mm high as well as 300 & 400 high

I have several sizes in stock now, can post anywhere.

Looks like you are opening a can of worms Geoffo. Every-one will want stands and no-one will get their pipes. You could set a junior at making the stands to fund the trip to CD8 :D :D :D
Do you have an air-operated one to go with the electric start on the new "wonder bikes"?

The stands will be at CD8, I have just made a bulk purchase of Australian designed and manufactured  with "real" Aussie steel off Geoffery so come and see me....I will be by the start line....the stands are the bees knees....one of my mates walked in and saw them and turned his nose up at them....we then gave him one to try under his bike and you wouldnt guess what happened next....he bought 2....another happy customer....so you had better get in early....I will be taking orders so Geoffery will crank up the production line to get them delivered asap. Support Geofferies dreams to be an enterpreneur and then he can retire up to sunny QLD and live out his days riding old Kawasaki enduro bikes. 8).....by the way, this is the OZVMX product of the month.

They look great.
One question though, can you lift the bike up with these using the rear arm as a lever or is it better to set the stand and lift the bike onto it?

Yes, lift up with the arm, no need to physically lift the bike.

Sorry I just noticed this.
What heights do you require?
Currently I make them in either 300, 350 or 400 high. You may need to check the ground clearance under the bike to see what sort of lift you require. The tall stands will lift the low bikes but it changes the leverage making it a little bit harder to lift.

I am out of stock at the moment and will be making some more over the next couple of weeks.

I'll do the measurements but Id guess a low stand for the 74 model - which will require the mods for an under slung pipe, for a 79 model I'm thinking a mid height would be good?
At the moment I have to lift it slightly to get an easy lift underneath it.

The 82 model is a mono shock so im thinking a tall one may be best for that?

Which colour for which bike will be the next question....

Just an update on these stands for anyone thinking about buying one.
I was more than happy with my transactions from the seller, just as I thought to myself that he hadn't contacted me about the money going through, the stands were on my door step.

After unwrapping them I am very impressed with the build quality and general look. They suit the old machines so much better and the fact GMC make them in different heights to suit different models is fantastic.
The 350mm model in red looks like it was made for my 79 model, it's awesome.

Nice work GMC, I'll order plenty more when more bikes arrive and you sort the under pipe model.

Glad you liked them.

I have a couple of 300's, 350's & 400's in blue or red in stock at the moment.

Let me know when you have the under pipe model in 300mm ready for my 74 model, will grab the others then.
If I get the others before then, the incentive won't be there for you to make the underpipe model ;)
