Hopefully tomorrow I'm going to oil and fuel my new RT1 360 flat tracker for a test fire up before we leave for the HBBB on Thursday night. I normally use a generic 20w-50w oil in the trans. Am I using the correct stuff or is there a secret I'm not aware of. I'm using Barnett kevlar clutch plates if that has any bearing on my oil choice.

Nope use what ya like, but id probally be on a lighter one if you can get it. you only need a litre so there is only loose change between the cheap stuff and the lighter sexy blends.
youo could go all out and mix it 50/50 with petrol and run it real light. but for what you doing i'd stick to how it comes out the bottle.

Back in the day I used ATF with no probs although today I would use a specialised oil, 2t gear box oil, or a full synthetic engine oil (rated 10-50sf IIRC). But I don't know the requirement on effects on the Barnett plates. I email Barnett to see if they have a recommendation. ;).
Or read the Barnett pack or the back of the 2t gearbox oil bottle.

i use good old Valvoline XLD in my bikes, my car, my lawn mower and have even thought about cooking with it ;D
well, no, not really the last one.
i've not had any problems at all and the price is right too ;)

Firko - in my 360 I use Silkolene Light Gear Oil - about $15 a litre - haven't had any dramas?

I still use ATF in my old square barrel Maico as that's all I've ever used in it. There might be something better but after forty years ownership it's still running the original gearbox internals with little sign of wear and tear so I'll stick with it in that bike. The Yammy's a different deal. I've used whatever engine oil I've used in my car in the past but since it's a while since I've campainged a Yamaha I thought there may be a new miracle wonder oil that I'm not aware of.
A bloke has PM'd me to say that the kevlar plates don't require any different oil to what I've been using.
I've just found a bottle of Motul 2t gearbox oil on my shelf so I'll go with that.....

I use the Castrol mineral based oils for the older bikes and have no gear problems yet.

I've always used Dexron ATF in my RT1 as it is a light weight oil while also being an extreme pressure lubricant which handles extreme tooth load pressure in car auto trans, plus is kind to auto trans clutches and bands under sometimes very high oil temps..
I have been told that friction modified oils are a problem in bikes [causing clutch slip], is this also the case with synthetics?

I use Penrite's synthetic gear box oil and it is great:
