OK, since fuel prices are just f*&kin' mental, I'm thinking of getting a bike to ride to work.
I have a KLX rolling chassis under the house with an ADR plate fitted, unfortunately it has a thow away motor.
Question is if I fit another motor, how difficult is it to get rego'd.
The frame and adr plate numbers match, but the engine number doesn't.
Located in QLD.
-
As long as its the same engine originally fitted to that bike there is no problem.
I rego`d a 72 Honda XL250 with a 74 engine without a problem.
-
How do they know what was fitted originally? The original numbers don't match.
I was going to try and fit an evo legal 2t motor.
-
does not matter about eng no not matching that will be sorted with the rwc.to do an engine swap you would need to have it engineered- a long drawn out process.take it too a big shop with lots of young blokes working there-they have no idea about old bikes so you could scam them as they would have no idea that it has a different motor in it .a mate of mine did it that way old bike with a different eng

OK, so I fit a, lets say, kdx 250 motor, get it up to scratch and roll it into a team moto ktm shop for a road worthy. Do they check to see if it is correct motor for bike.
Or is that done at QLD transport when I hand over cash, rego papers and roadworthy, do they then do a search to see if that motor belongs in that bike?
Who at roadworthy/rego stage determines if it's the right motor or not.

when I got an '88 DT175 registered the RTA's computer told the lady behind the counter that my bike didn't exist, after a bit of searching (using the engine number) we found that the matching frame vin number had been entered into their system with two letters wrong and that had never been picked up on because the bike had never been registered before. that apparently took a bit of correcting.
but that's not saying the computer knows the difference between a 2T and a 4T 250 kawasaki engine.. the engine would have to be out of an ADR bike though to slip past the RTA though ;)
Cheers!

Good luck with trying to get it passed with a different engine.
I`m in NSW so don`t know how it is in QLD but in order to get it passed for rego here it has to get a "blue slip" which can only be issued by accredited engineers that know their shit and have probably seen every trick in the book.
The guy that passed my XL250 knew the model well and had all the relevant information on the bike on hand.

Swapping to a different KLX engine is a non-issue.
Swapping to a different Kawasaki engine of the same capacity is a non-issue if it bolts directly into the frame (or looks like it does...) and came from another road rego-able Kawasaki.
Anything else will probably require an engineers report (or blue mod plate in Qld, as I understand it).

Same horsepower or less:No problems.More horsepower you need an engineers report.paul.

OK, so the vibe I'm getting is that there's a data base somewhere in cyber space of adr'd bikes and their engine numbers....problem is Kawasaki didn't have a evo legal 250/500 2t in Oz...did they?
Did any KDX 420's make it here?
-
why not put a kl or klx motor back in and save the head fork, other than that you need a engineers report

The database is as patchy as all hell, particularly for older stuff and particularly for bikes. When you add in the confusion of jap-import stuff, most rego inspectors (in this part of the world) will judge the vehicle on its merits.
If there were any KDX420s, then I would be amazed if they were ADR complied.
There were Evo-legal KX250s, if that's what you're asking? Evo-legal and road legal would be looking as older trailbike stuff like F11s.

i'm with matty ;),even a poxy KZ250 roady single motor should go in,afterall it's just a comuta, must be shiploads of those around?, :P
-
OK besides a commute, I want it to be evo legal, so on Sunday I can punt it around a track somewhere. Unfortunately the original Kawasaki 4t motors just dont cut it.
I could just go out and get a IT or PE or something European, easy peasy, but those couple of KX hybrids done by kaw440 have given me a vintage bike chubby.
My other option is to do somthing with a motor from one of those bikes listed above, but it just wouldn't be right. Hybrids look best when they look like they come from the factory. A KDX 420 motor would be the bee knees. A nice torquey motor and evo legal. :-*
Just need to get it on the road. :-\

have ideal thing have a kdx 400 coming

Robyn, Will keep that in mind, I got your p.m., I was going to try and drop by your shop over easter.
....now I jst need to find some cash :P :P
At the end of the day if it doesn't work out with rego, I'll still have a cool EVO race bike.Win, Win realy.

I'm pretty sure that anything pre '76 just goes straight thru. as long as it looks the goods. Doesn't even need indicators.

wont be here over easter.container arrives port today so should see all the goodies after easter
