A good point about shocks was bought up in the HL thread.
Are Piggy back shocks legal for Pre 78?
I know remote reservoirs were around in 77 but were piggy backs available?
I don’t know of anyone making new shocks with remote reservoirs which is why you see so many piggyback shocks these days

Come in Leith :)
As far as I know piggybacks appeared about 80/81.
-
I just remembered Geoff, 76/77 KTM's had Marazzochi (or how you spell it) piggybacks upside down like the KYB's on the MX/YZ Yammies

yer you are right.I was thinking about ohlins on Huskies and Corte Cosse's on Maico's but forget about those KTM Marzocchis. They actually went back to remotes when they changed to ohlins after those Marzooks.

The '77 VB250 and 360 Montesas came out with piggyback shocks (Betors, I think ?). The '78 VBs went back to remote reservoirs.

The Montesa V75 250 and VA 250/360 had piggyback Betors (for what they are worth ::)) I think the Bullies of the same period also had them but not 100% sure

Im pretty sure some of my really old WP's were around pre 80 but dont think pre 78. Marzocchis and Thermal flows are the obvious ones plus a few oddball euro brands but other than there wasnt much that i know off ???. The ohlins piggyback were on the 79 works suzukis from photos ive seen but i dont think they were available to the public till 80 like moto says. Fox Factory piggybacks appeared in 1979/80. I think everyone knows modern piggybacks shouldnt be allowed in pre 78 but they are. The rules wont change though so not much point getting too worked up about it now. Ideally the rules couldn't have be written to allow the old Marzocchis but not modern piggyback Ohlins etc. I say just use what ever shocks you want to.

Companies can make them, usually by special order though. Ohlins could make them if they really wanted to. They have the parts. People just seem to favour the piggybacks these days though and demand for remotes has dropped off. There is only 2 key parts that are no longer made that is stopping them making them at the moment, thats non adjustable ones. They can be easily made if you have a lathe though ;)

Yamaha Thermal Flows were pre-75. The orientation is not relevant.

Gazzi have a new shock for pre 78 I have been testing the prototypes. If you need shocks for pre 78 try these more or less copied from Marazzochi from a 77 KTM.

YSS makes shocks with hose and reservoir as an option , the bodies are 50 micron steel so they dont wear . http://www.suspensionshop.org/VMX-Kawasaki.php
Very well presented Sprite and Wassell pages Wasp 8)

We must have gotten ohlins piggybacks a few years earlier than the rest of the world over in nz seeing as they seem to be pre75 legal ::)
-
You blokes have dodgy pre 75 rules....as bad as those English single shock bikes converted back to twin shocks.
-
I think you mean no rules, you'll see what I mean at taupo unless Bill etc make some up

No rules no protests..that's perfect 8)

The Mk 9 (76) and Mk 10 (77) Bultaco Pursangs all had Betor piggy back shocks standard. They had remote reservoir shocks on all the following years
-
There were quite a few piggy back shocks around in the 70's, anyway it's neither here nor there in performance until they bring 30min motos back in ;)

As a matter of interest I saw a pair of upside down rear shocks on a duplex BSA B33 in around 1964 racing at Arcadia. The bike was owned by the brother [can't remember his name]of the clever tuner of Velos, the late Keith Smith.
They were modified girlings. Nothing new under the sun eh? cheers pancho.
