After receiving a thousand differing opinions on trailer legalities from a bunch of insurance companies today i thought i would i would ask these questions. Maybe someone has had some experience in this matter.
1 : If i am driving a fully comprehensive insured registered vehicle with a registered ( but not insured ) trailer ( under the GVM ) in tow and i hit someone ( with my vehicle ) will my insurance cover the costs
(a) to the other vehicle
(b) to my vehicle
(c) to my trailer
(d) to any goods in my trailer
2 : If i am driving a fully comprehensive insured registered vehicle with a registered ( but not insured ) trailer ( under the GVM ) in tow and i hit someone ( with my trailer ) will my insurance cover the costs
(a) to the other vehicle
(b) to my vehicle
(c) to my trailer
(d) to any goods in my trailer
3 : If someone runs into my registered ( but not insured ) trailer are they liable for costs
(a) to my trailer
(b) to any goods in my trailer
(c) to my vehicle

Slightly off the Topic.
I recently got a quote for insureing my Maico 490 pride and joy, got the cover I wanted and the price was good. I then decided to ask the insurance company to quote me on the trailer i have done up to carry the bikes on. The insurer asks what the trailer is worth I say around $2200.00 to $2500.00 dollars, I get the quote back and it is double the price of my bike and my bike is valued at $15,000.00. I could not work that one out.

Ted, not trying to be funny, but the answer will be in your insurance policy, a hard read but that's where your answers will be.
-
be carefull if its one of those 5th wheel type trailers i know people who have been knocked back for claims on them for not holding a hc licence even though they dont come under the same catagory as a prime mover for licencing.cheers gary

Good questions.
In my car insurance the content is limited to $1000 and it has to be 'receipted'. Both would be difficult for VMXers. To get specific cover they would have to be specifically requested and extra premium paid.
There could be a good article for VMX mag when you get the answer 8) :D.
-
If the trailer is uninsured, then any damage you cause to your trailer will have to be fixed out of your pocket. Late edit because vmx42 is right: Unless your vehicle insurer has a policy that covers your trailer and/or its contents.
If someone else damages your uninsured trailer and/or trailer contents, then they are liable. Whether their insurance company wants to play ball is another matter - something that's becoming increasingly common is to simply (threaten to) sue the other driver for damage to your vehicle/property. It tends to stop a lot of insurance company nonsense pretty quickly...

I am sure the Swedish, Italian, Japanese, UK and US readers would be absolutely riveted. ;D
Every insurance company is different, most policies are different so there would be no ONE ANSWER. The only way for Ted to have his question answered is for him to contact his insurer. I would love to see him stand up in court and say "the experts on OzVMX see it differently my Lord!!".
This is supposed to be a fun site yakkin' about old motorcycles and a discussion about insurance companies doesn't come close to fitting that description. 8)

I'm covered by RACQ and the answer to your questions are YES and YES. This is for a trailer under 750 kg gvm. It does not have it's own insurance, It's covere under my cars insurance.
Other insurance companies may differ, but it would be outlined in the policy.
Not sure for trailers over 750 kg gvm as they have their own insurance policy.

I have contacted all my insurance companies and my broker....being why i posted this in the first place
I`ll bet they are as riveted as i am to your response. My opening clearly states " maybe has had some experience in this matter " which clearly you do not
The last time i looked it was an OZZY site and this relates to OZ so who gives a toss what foreigners think.
If you cannot advance me in the right direction keep your ill informed comments to yourself

Ted, he was talking about OzVMX and the magazine seperately.

Ted, my policy seem's to go into great dept about caravans and lightly touch's on the subject of trailers .
From what I can make out , if my trailer is register and coupled to my insured car it shares the same benifits ( trailer is replaced at a market value )
The contents of the trailer are not insured against theft :o
-
oldfart...that is what i reckon of all this too....but when you mention a trailer ( not a caravan ) they get very vague. Lack of product knowledge methinks.
Nath...So why use my name in his comments. Fair enough and i agree it would be as boring as batshit to cover OZ insurance in a globally distributed magazine but this is an OZ forum relating to OZ. And as far as his fun site is concerned let him explain how much fun it would be to lose all your bikes, gear and trailer in an accident while thinking you are doing the right thing.
BTW...you refer to him as Your Honour...not my Lord!!...hehe

Hey Ted, what do you think is the correct white for early YZ tanks...

I really truly believe that you need to build a bridge and get over this infatuation with Nathan,
I know that he is a very attractive man, and reminds you of those Iraqi POw's you captured in Kuwait, but cmon big fella lets focus on more important things, like YZ tanks and restoring crappy old Kawasakis,......

Ted, vmx42's first paragraph was about the magazine, the rest was in response to you.
Firko, pretty sure Ted was talking to Rudy.

TEd i was reading this morning that your not covered also if the trailer is over weight, unroadworthy blah blah as well. also the killer if the car isnt rated for it.

Ted in QLD we have 2 different types of trailer requirements.
1st being under 750 gvm (most non braked box type trailers) which are covered under your cars insurance and can't be independently insured.
2nd being over 750kg gvm which need a roadworthy and their own insurance.
So I guess it depends on what type of trailer your trying to insure.
On a side note, I have a chippie mate who had tool insurance for all his gear and he though everything was insured while it was in his builders trailer. He went away for the w/end and placed his trailer in his garage under his house and locked the place up.
on returning he found his house had been broken into and all his tools amongst other things had been stolen. Upon making a claim to replace his tools, his claim was rejected because his trailer wasn't locked, even though it was locked in his garage, which had signs of forced entry. Lost about $70k worth of gear.

What about the load of unregistered racing dirt bikes on the trailer? if the trailer is covered by insurance? is the load of unregistered vehicles covered by that insurance as well?
On a recent inquiry of home and contents insurance I was told that unregistered vehicles are not covered.
If they are registered but uninsured, they will be covered anyhow under the umbrella of home and contents if secured within the boundaries of the property, but if unregistered they are not covered.
A panel beater friend said it is the same for his shop. If he takes on an unregistered project of any substantial value for someone else, he has to individually insure it himself to make sure he is indeed covered. In case the owner of the vehicle has bull shitted him.
It seams unregistered vehicles have to be individually insured through some sort of specialists like Shannons etc.
-
Mick,
I doubt that they would cover the uninsured/unregistered contents of the trailer ie; MX bikes, your right they should be covered independantly.
The trailer would just be covered for damage you or someone else does to it, or damage the trailer does to someone else.......I think ;)

There are some insurers who will not insure a motorcycle if it is not registered. I have found Shannon's to be very good and they will insure unregistered motorcycles of all ages. I have unfortunately had the need to find out if they back up their product when I had a brand new KTM stolen. They do; replaced with a brand new one then slugged me with a 40% premium increase for 12 months that then went back to normal. Not bad service for a new customer who is probably not ever going to give them back the value of a new KATO in a lifetime of premiums. They also insure riding gear and motorcycle parts. After such great service and value for money I don't even bother to get quotes from their competitors as most of them are anywhere from double the cost to even 4 times dearer. :) :) :) :)
