Title: F1 car at bathurst
Post by: steveo247 on March 22, 2011, 03:45:54 pm
heres a video i took today of jenson button driving his f1 around the mount. The sound of the thing was insain echoing around the mount, and far out did it make lowndes v8 super car look slow.

he only did 2 hot laps, and the second lap was 1min.48seconds where the v8 supercar lap record was 2min.06seconds!

amazing..

Now that I would go back to the mountain and watch......imagine a F1 race at that place.....who's got the balls going down the mountain.....I reckon the drivers would love it. 8)

Back in 2000 Kevin Curtain was doing laps on a stock Yamaha R1 a few seconds shy of the V8 Stupidcar laptimes.

It is a shame that he cannot race a motorcycle at Bathurst any more as they are banned  :(

But it is ok to close the public roads to let a soap dodger do a few laps in a F1 car. Mt Panorama Bathurst, 6 events allowed by council each year and this was one of them, pathetic, it could have been done during the 6 hour weekend or the Easter meet for rich race car drivers.

The 2000 Bikes are Back event at the Mount did not just provide the opportunity for road racers to race at Mt Panorama it also included MX and many junior MX riders at the MT Panorama MX track in the event. this was good to watch, as they run after the road racing had stopped and gave the BIG crowd more racing for their entry fee.
But who would ever risk promoting such a big event again after the broadcaster for the event pulled the pin on the TV coverage and so every advertiser got very little for their money.  ::)

Maybe we should ask Jensen Bumnut to ride a motorcycle around Bathurst, I bet he would be to scared to ... ;)

Tell us what you really think  :o So what is it you don't like? Poms, cars, rich race drivers or all of the above? Brighten up, life's too short to throw so much angst into one post. ::)

The council gave special permission for the event to take place. It doesn't count in the 6 yearly events.

It was a great promotion for Bathurst, F1 and V8 Supercars - it will be beamed all over Europe so they can see what a real circuit is like.

Life is short firko, and there will be many more old guys who just want another crack at racing at the Mount who will pass before they have that chance again just because they like to race motorcycles  :(

The cost to the Bathurst Council to run today's event does provide a, one off, publicity stunt but if they put that cost into running a motorcycle road race on the Mount then there would be an on flow to many businesses in the city of Bathurst with accommodation, food etc...and.....
This event could be a annual income earner for the town.

So that is what I don't like.... Bathurst Council looking after, as you say, Poms, cars and rich race drivers and ignoring Motorcycle racers. Paul Toole may have my vote but I want to see change in the Council and State policy to run race meetings at Mt Panorama for motorcycles.

PS... My partner is a "Pom" so I can't say I do not like them and there are some cars I really like. I did work for the Ford motor company for many years so it is hard to not like cars when you work in the industry.  Rich people... I know a few friends with a quid, so no, I don't need to even talk about this one.

So... do you support the motorcycle track at Bathurst firko.... ???

Of course I support motorcycle racing on Mt Panorama but I also support anything else that happens on the mountain. Jensen Button and Craig Lowndes doing some hot laps in an F1 around the Hallowed Hill on a quiet Tuesday arvo when nothing else was happening motorsport wise was a good thing from where I sit.

Well firko, it appears that you support everything but motorcycle racing on the Mount. It is a shame that you will not support road racing on Mt Panorama, you shy away from the obvious questions about racing on the Mount like ... can it happen?

and lets build the GP track, Lets do it, now. Bring the Bikes back to Bathurst

dont see how this thread had anything to do with the bikes at bathurst, or how it could possibly be a bad thing to bring an F1 car to bathurst for a demonstration?

anyhow.
here is a full on board lap.. its just crazy!

Thanks for that Stevo geeezzzzuuuuus that made a V8 stupidcar look awfuly slow, considering they told Jenson to go easy through the Dipper , he was still going hard as he chirped the inside front into Forrest Elbow.

I'd swear he ran out of gears going both up & down the mountain, can't see that they would have had high enough ratios

jenson said he ran out of gearing coming down the mount, as this was his 2007 car that they had geared for melbourne (for promo laps i think they said)
he said with the right gearing, he could have gotten around 360kph instead of the 290 - 300 he got.

But he also said that the track is very very bumpy and that its hard to get the confidence to commit to the corners!
I ran around the mount yesty and there is marks all across the top where the car was bottoming out and dragging!

At 1 min; 10 secs you can hear four nice little blips of tyre and/or chassis skipping.

He didn't need to downshift in order to get up the hill - unlike my Yaris.

I often wonder what foreign drivers think, once they've seen this amazing track's hills and bottom-out
dips and humps.   With treacherous concrete liners on the corners.  And that killer downhill snaking bit.

What an amazing place.   And what a great idea, to fang an F1 around it!   (Singin' like a Honcho WFO!)

F1, in my opinion should be a fast track like bathurst, Avalon should be made into an F1 track, fast and long , there is plenty of land their,  Airport, over looking Corio Bay, it has it all, they could also have other venues, Vintage motoross track, modern motocross, speedway, F1 track could also be used for the V8, road racing, drag racing, Go Kart Track, also twin engine go kart racing or 360 engine go kart racing. WOW would that be a hoot. Airport could be made into an international Airport, mono rail from geelong pass the airport and onto Melbourne.
