I'm in the process of building up another XT500 race bike.
I've been collecting bits and pieces for a few years now and with the race season drawing near I'm pushing to get it finished.
The frame is an XT "H" I got from the dump shop and it's had some dodgy repairs so I'm quite happy to modify it.
I've removed a couple of kgs of brackets and braces, lowered the footpegs and deraked it.
The motor is and overbored SR500 with a hi-comp piston I picked up locally.
The bike has 43mm forks with suitable springs and PD valves and my super-duper offset steering shaft. A PE swingarm and OHLINS shocks. I'm fitting a YZ125C tank at present and still need to make and airbox and pipe.
I'm making or finding all the little fiddly bits that take up all the time, axle spacers, mounts, brackets, levers, etc.
I'm doing this arse about really, it will get built, raced for most of the year then pulled apart and cleaned up and painted.

hey Brent,
i'm keen as mustard to follow your progress here as i've all the bits to do pretty much the same thing.after all, i've only had all my bits laying around for about 4 years now. i just need to get some other stuff out of the way first.
ok, so when you say you've de-raked the frame? how did you do that? cut what? welded what?
-
Looks the goods brent paint can come later , i hope with the completed pics ?.

Looks like it was ment to be 8) are you coming down to CD5 ? If so will you bring it with you ? I like these bikes been built from a bit of this and a bit of that.jimson
-
Vandy I'll PM you with details of the frame mods, it's not something to be done lightly and I don't want to "put it out there" so to speak in case there are come backs.
Hilly, there will be progress pics
Jimson, I won't be at CD5 (inconsiderate sisters wedding) but will make Conondale and Proserpine. I'm starting to plan for CD6 but.

thanks for that Brent,
it all sounds good and might catch you at conondale to boot!
-
got your PM ok Brent and thanks for the info, much appreciated!
this is as far as i got my first time round, then i parked it so i could do other things.
thats a yz80b feul tank with the front mount idea stolen from husky, it just looks too short without it and i've cut a bigger tunnel into the tank so it fits over the stock tt frame. i think it holds about 3 litres.
anyway, i've picked up a yz125c tank since then so while it's still in the early stages i would like to do it so it matches up with my imagination.
so many things to do, so little time as my house needs stuff done that'll take priority. i'd love to say my beast will be at conondale but i'd need to get my finger out soon.
back to you Brent...

The next installment!
I've opened the tank tunnel up to fit over the frame. Precision tools here, several hammers and a shaped block of 4X2 timber. I found the rear mount needs a spacer about 20mm to lift the back of the tank. On bikes with leading axle forks the seat and tank mounts are further back than the earlier ones. This is a late frame so the rear tank mount lines up. On my "C" I had to move the seat and tank back to clear the oil filler and the leading axle forks.

Next is the airbox. I make an inner rear guard and use this as the back of the airbox. I lost the pattern and ran out of time to make the sides so that will have to wait til next weekend. I've still got to weld tabs on the hold the guard.

And the back brake anchor. This is 10mm thick alloy welded to the PE swingarm. I use small hub Yamaha wheels as these things don't need much of a back brake. 20mm axles with 4 bearings guarantee plenty of strength on a heavy bike. Not sure what they are off but I suspect IT/YZ465-490?

We are organizing Darwins first VMX class this year on April 6 so I'm trying to get this finished by then.
There is also the posibility of a very well known interstate rider coming to Darwin. He has a liking for 4 strokes so I'll be extra busy.
Cheers

Hi brent,
noticed on picture with tank fitted , It looks like the motor is already set up to have the oil going into
the exhaust Rocker, what set up do you use, do you just go only to exhaust and blank original,
Have you got special fittings or do you modify the standard rocker bolt
Cheers

Noel,
The motor in that pic is just a shell (I have striped it) and that fitting was there when I got it. I don't have the rest of the bits for the oil feed mod.
Although I should do now thanks to Paul.
I'll pull the fitting out this weekend and see if there's much involved in modifying the std one.

hi Brent
got the bug to get back on the dirt again[ i should have kept my old tt5d with yz4d forks and revised shock mount build by Dave Basham S.A.] and are building up a xt5g with klx swingarm,16 and three quarter fox airs and would like to know the derake secrets so i can get the thing to take corners without the chopper front end washout these olds xts deliver.
Thanks TT5 Matt

justa thought on that twin feed,is the inlet feed restricted compared to the exhaust rockers' feed,(was a good setup on beezer B range singles ;)),cheers :P

Hi Brent,
thanks for the info you sent me, just looking at the pic of frame in post and noticed the repositioning of the rear shock mounts. i picked up a frame recently with the same mods. Apart from better looks and being able to use longer shocks is there a handling advantage in this set up? Thanks
searbs

TT5matt,
Apart from deraking the frame I found a mix and match on the forklegs and triples completes the front end.
I use Suzuki forklegs (PE175, 38mm, 30mm offset) with Honda triples (21.5mm offset) although Yamaha triples (25mm offset) work well and require minimal mods to fit. My bikes do not plough and I lnow what they are like standard!
Searbs,
the longer shocks allow more travel but no other difference in handling.
Mick, I'm not sure if there is any restriction. Most kits only add oil to the exhaust rocker, I assume to reduce the heat buid up.

thanks for the reply, having owned 10 500s 4tts and 6xts all with various back end cut and shuts and of course matching long travel mx front ends to suit i too know what there like and thats why they need the steering head angle tightened up to match current bikes that do handle THATS WHY i want to derake soo can you provide the information?
thanks TT5 Matt
-
Matt & Brent,
i just copied and pasted the info Brent sent me a few days ago and forwarded it onto Matt.
just thought i'd save you rewriting it all.
very helpfull...

Brent & Vandy
thanks for the emails and it should get me thumping around the hundres of dirt 2 wheel tracks on the outskirts of town to relive my youth when a few mates and i would spend all w/end hacking about without going over the same ground twice, ive got no desire to go back on the track but enjoyed racing when i was younger though would like to have a go at sos bitchy burning with a dropped to the ground xt [dont want to wreck my old sr] one day.
again thanks for your help

hey brent, how's the project goin?
-
VERY F*&KEN SLOWLY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I've been trying to finish the bathroom and wifeys workshop. I'm still making bits and pieces at work but so far not enough time to get back onto it.
I hope in the next few weeks to get some progress. I've got nearly all the parts it's just time.
I've also got some repairs to my current race bike and I'm getting the mighty Rodeo ready for the trip to Conondale.
This will be a race bike but also a loaner, if someone wants to try vintage racing or anyone who visits Darwin will have able to ride it.
Time, time, time I think most of us can relate to that!
By the way thanks for a bit of motivation
Cheers
Brent
PS note to self, never renovate again!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Looking forward to the next burst of activity, can relate to the demands of home reno's, as far as motivation goes no 1 son is hovering over an xt frame with a grinder in his hands. Thanks for the mod info
