Title: How Many Ride Modern Also?
Post by: Tahitian_Red on February 03, 2008, 04:54:28 pm
I'm about to take my first plunge into modern technology.  How many of you also ride modern bikes?

2001 YZ 250 is about as modern as I wanna get. It'll still stick it to most 4 suckin' 450's with half the hassle...

Up until about 5 months ago i always had a modern (yzf250 '06),but i have not replaced it and dont think it will be replaced this year at least. Latest model bike is a Vertemati 495 '97 model.

I bought an '05 YZ125 a couple of months ago, so yes, I ride a modern as well. Funnily enough I took both it and the '75 RM125 out to track the other weekend, and while the YZ was superb and did everything right, I preferred to ride the '75. But the track was pretty smooth too...

I have a YZF250 06 yellow model and it has about 30hrs on the meter. I like the bike, but if I had to toss a coin the old bikes would win hands down.

Ktm 250 i ride trail and MX tracks, save the old girls for the races.

Got a few current roadies to but they do more sitting than riding, they are getting to complicated.

I have a 2008 KTM 200 EXC I use for trail riding.

Took it out along with my 1981 Maico 250 last weekend and the Maico holds up very well. A few mates who have only ever ridden modern 4 strokes had a ride they were all so impressed how well it goes I had trouble getting it back.

Had a great day riding 2007 RMZ 450 and Honda 480 CR 1983.  NO good reason you cannot ride both. I prefer to limit time on the VMX bikes. Enjoy getting fit on either a RMZ 450, KX 250 or Beta trials bike. However nothing nicer than a VMX ride.

Thanks for the input.  Looks like I'll be picking up a brand new 2007 YZ450F that was still on the showroom floor.  It came down to that and a 2008 RMZ250.  The RMZ is turning out to be the new Maico (handling wise), but at 220 lbs I'm a little big for it.

There will probably be a Pre 2000 class soon, so your YZ will be vintage eligible..................  ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D

I've got a 99 Husky WR360, but would love a 2002+ TM250 or 300. Occasionally I get a bit excited by new/nearly new YZ125s at low prices, but not that excited...
Also have a 94 TM125 and an 89 KTM250GS.

Well I changed my mind at the last minute and bought a 2008 YZ450F.  I watched a video, on the internet, this morning of Chuck Sun testing the 2007 YZ450F and he washed out in an easy corner.  If he can't make it turn, I certainly can't.

It's a blue one, but I've already ordered the yellow Hurricane Hannah kit!  ;)  I just hope she doesn't spoil me. LOL

Haven't had a road bike since selling my '86 GSX-R1100, but if I owned one today, I reckon I'd love one those too, Tankslapper.
And it's got 2 shocks.  ;D

TED ......you have to love the new ktms ,i test rode every new bike before i bought the 530, and i think that ktms 4 stroke reliability is better than the rest of the high performance 4 strokes, i had a 2000 model ktm 520exc that i bought when it was a year old,i raced it......trail rode it....lent it to my friends......rode it to work and generally flogged it to death, when i sold it in 2005 it had 47000 km on the speedo, the only thing i ever replaced on it was 1 spark plug!!!!!!thats it,,,,my brothers wr426 wasnt as reliable as he had 2 gearbox rebuilds, exhaust cam timing sproket slipped on the end of the camshaft and destroyed the top end,,,,and he also did a big end....however my other brother has a wr450 and he hasnt had any dramas.....so mybe he had a better pick of the litter.....
I liked the new injected huskys until i read the service requirements you have to honour to be able to get the 2 years warranty, replacing the bigend at 5000km is plain stupid....
The honda crf450x is a maintance nightmare,,,,,for a starters you need allow 2 hours just to get the air filter out!!!!!!!!!!!
the suzuki doesnt make a high performace 4 stroke that you can street ride,if you call a drz high performance you need riding lessons....
I really liked the Gas Gas but unless you are well under six foot dont bother,,,the kawaski is to new for me to consider,....i think these comments should get a few toungs wagging !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I ride a 2006 crf450X, airfilter change, about 3 minutes, never heard of anyone taking 2 hours to change an airfilter, I'd say anyone taking 2 hours to change airfilter musn't have any arms and must be doing it with there teeth, been great bike except for the soft Honda rims :D

:o :o :o

I've got a WR250F and after 5k's of steady riding it feels like I'm having a wedge kicked up the kyber (narrow hard seat). Don't notice it on the trail because you move around ...but for commuting :o ::)

You're a brave or desparate man Zorro ;)

Hole shot Buddy......that is one serious machine i wanted to do that myself, service honda in the states do the kx500 frame kits now............could you imagine riding one of them on the street fully prepped up.......did you do that conversion yourself!!!!!!.....i had a 93 kx500 years ago 66hp standard they produced at the flywheel.....one awesome machine with a dated chassis, why they dont race more kx500s in the finke i will never no,more stable than its honda opposition and when that power valve opens on the main jet oooohhhhhh yeahhhhhhhhhh.........

I sat around drooling over her lastnight.  DD size Ti footpegs, Pro-Taper bars and Excel rims, all stock!  She's like a Super Model !  ;D

Just gotta find out if I'm man enough to tame her.   :D

This is what it will look like in evening wear:

That's a weapon alright.  Looks it, and the tests back it up.  Look forward to first ride, then race report.  ie, is she a torquer or all rev/over rev.  is the suspension hard as a rock (for guys that actually go fast) or plush - or can you adjust to either?

No doubt it will do everything you want it to and more, and idle nicely afterwards too.

Hey Holeshot,
I had a sneak ride of that before it went travelling, and I like it! It could probably do with some velcro on the hand grips though. Excellent job by we know who, and anyone would be hard pressed to say it wasn't out of the factory. Well done, it is a hell of a bike and a talking point for sure.
Cheers,
K

Well she was blue when I brought her home, but this is what she looks like now.

It's killing me because I haven't been able to take her out yet.  :(
