I found your post quite confusing. Could you maybe expain it a bit different? Im guessing you want some custom plates made eg 'PE400-82' or something or you are trying to see if someone already has the number your after? I think in either case contact http://www.vicroads.vic.gov.au/Home/

Generally state transport/rego departments such as Vic roads, Transport SA etc are very strict about not giving out any details regarding a previous owner of a vehicle you own or if you go in and ask ' I saw a Holden ute with UBZ-866 plates, can you please give me their number or address so i can ask if they would sell me the plates' they definitely wont tell you anything like that.

I think Frosty has found the plate that he likes, but someone else has it already. I think he want's to know how he can contact the person who has the plate that he want's so he can wave wads of cash in front of them to either sell it to him, or hand them in so he can then get them re made and issued to him. Is that right :D.

Well the ones I want are n/a some one obviously has them my grandpa has some on his car that someone wants to buy I don't know how they tracked him down.

Plus you can't get any plate you want it has to be in either aa-000 or 5 leter format ie bikes you cant mix numbers and leters for some reason. I do want PE 400 but doubt I could get my hands on it. ::)

That is right Adam. :)

Ok yeah no way rego places will give out the owners details. The only way is if you see them drive past and follow them home.
if you cant have numbers and letters on bikes then you cant have PE400 then. and PEFOURHUNDRED is obviously too many letters.

Yeah if no one else has PE397 and it was a number previously issued then sure you can have them. You would have to go in with your dad though. If you just ring up and ask has anyone got PE397 if they say no then thats ok but if they yes, thats all they will tell you. It might be that they are still listed under your dads name but if your on the phone and they say 'that number is taken' and you say 'ok my name is Michael Ryan, would the number just happen to be listed under my dads name', they probably still will not tell you. You would have to go into the rego place with your dad. Chances are your dad still knows if the number is or isnt still owned by him. Usually the rego places have to send you a letter to say they wish to re-issue your number. They have to get the owners permission first. if the bike has not been regoed for many years there is still a high chance it is still listed under your dads name.

You can't have 400PE you can't have numbers before letters you can only have two letters followed by three numbers or 5 letters I would if I could have 400PE get it but you can't I found some combo's for my rd250 but I don't mind running a standard plate on it. :)

I have the Victorian released "PE250" in black & white.

Have had them since the 90's, been on hold for the last few (many) years. There is no way known to man that if a plate is aready allocated that you will get the owners details unless;
- You see them on the road and pull the driver over and have a chat (or)
- The plate is for sale on a website, in a magazine etc.

Some years back you could place a request on Vic Roads to advise the owner of the plate that someone was interested in their plates but the privacy act has long since shut that down.

Keep digging Frosty, I tracked down a set of road plates I wanted, with help from Vicroads. (http://www.vehiclestatuscheck.vicroads.vic.gov.au/VehicleInput.aspx)
They politely contacted the owner of said plates ,who then most impressively contacted me. He is still using them but is handing his license in late this year (being a young 94!) and I will be contacted re taking the plate number. Cheers Tim754      *the plates in question..... "Tim754"..... ;D

You could also do what my mate did track the plates down then buy the car off the owner !!!. His name is Ken Mc*** and he was born February 1958 . Plate he has now Ken258  ;) These he just transfers to ever new car he buys.
