I know Randy pretty well.  He usually pretty reasonable on his prices.
Just a tad over priced!

It's like anything that you want badly enough...... :P Less than 400 of these things built and that one's in pretty good knick.
When I was hunting for my first one I wouldv'e gladly snapped that one up. Now that I have three, the fires died a little..... :-X

* It says 250 on the sidecovers? ???

Looks like the pipe is off a VF/VG model and the silencer looks like a 250 and not a 414 one still nice and rare, most of this year (1979) bikes 250/414 were scraped when they became a good few years old because they were considered to be less attractive than the yellow tank models something to do with that supposedly ugly mustard/green tank there's even less 250VE models left, to me i think they look real mean wish it was in the UK.

Not  the ugliest bike ever put to market but then not the prettiest either.

Rare, and worth having, but I think $3900 for a non-running but fairly compete and original 414 is 'over the market'. Let the market decide.  ;) :)

When they were new I reckon I had the very first 414 VE that Lyall O'brien imported. I remember uncrating it and thinking:
"What were they thinking" when they designed the side covers, mudgaurds, muffler and tank colour. I had a 78 250 VB with a 360 head, barrel, pipe and carb fitted from new and that was a nice looking bike that went and handled very well.
Anyway after running the 414 in I found it to be an excellent bike apart from feeling it was shorter in the wheelbase as it tried to wheelie everywhere. I can't remember checking the difference but thats how it felt. We made sidecovers for the VB to comply with the rear mounted number plate law at the time so I had a set made in white for the 414. Trimmed up the rear gaurd length, fitted a stadium front gaurd and I think they suited the bike much better but it was hard to do anything about the tank colour.
This one for sale seems to be a bit on the high side for a bike that will need a fair bit of work, but who knows maybe the Ugly duckling has become a rare collector?
The pic below is my 414 VE.

Stan. You're right mate. I remember when I had that VE 414 of yours it just wanted to wheelie everywhere and yet my VF's (although grouse to ride), just didn't seem to loft the front as much.
Then when I had the two of them side-by-side on the trailer a coupla months ago the VE looked a good couple of inches shorter in the wheel base. That coupled with the 17" rim and tyre (yes they are a lot smaller still than an 18 " with tyre) and you've got a monster that just wants to dig trenches and mono everywhere...... :P

I just love the look of the VE and if I was only allowed to keep one Monty, it'd be the one. 8)

I've been inspired by all this to race the VE this year. Small numberplate and all.  ;)

I'm not sure you are small number plate worthy :D ;D make sure it has a little Montesa sticker in the corner otherwise all the performance benifit is lost :P ;D
