I was watching and episode of Full Throttle Saloon last night and this rival outfit had set up Smash Mouth playing across the street. My wife who is somewhat younger is going ohhhh Smash Mouth.

What happened the Full Throttle was packed to the rafters to watch Billy Ray Sirus and it was Smash Mouth Who? .... so it is a generational thing

I probably need to clarify my complaint.
The MODERN music I am talking about has only risen it,s ugly head in the last year or so.

EXAMPLE
New one being played now. These are the words.
" This is a song I,ve written just for you, hope you like it. Na na na na na n na nannananananananananana" .
That,s it, there is NOTHING ELSE.
I don,t mine Rammstien,White Stripes , Peas but this new stuff is just brain dead shit.
Grump,Grump,Grump ;D

My recent brush with musical fame was cleaning out a few Caronas from the base player of the Yayaya s hospitality suite

My old brush was more interesting, where I shagged this chick who was dating a Gypsy King  ::)

Mate, now you are talking. Just for good measure throw in Peter Gabriel, Fleetwood Mac, Xavier Rudd, Johnny Cash, Waylon Jennings, Kris Kristofferson, Willie Nelson, Chris Rea, Dire Straits, The Police, Mental As Anything and Icehouse. Some of these are probably not everyones cup of tea, but at least you can understand the lyrics and they are mostly relevant in some way.

The bands I saw when I was a kid!
Jethro Tull, Led Zep , Sabbath, Canned Heat , Railroad Jin ,Carol Loyd Band , Matt Taylor, Tom Waits, Deep Purple , Steppenwolf , George Thorogood and more.
Every one of them was good.
Used to go to the Qld Uni,they had some brilliant bands there.
There was DJ,s in the valley where the new bands would play Saturday arvo. FREE entry.
Always missed AC-DC tho, bummer.
I really miss those days. Everything was new and exciting , including the bikes, the racing , the mates, the music.

This thread is a lot of fun....
I pride myself in having a fairly wide interest in all kinds of music, however some of the stuff just mentioned does not fit real well in the category. plus some performers really grate on my nerves and I find it wierd that a lot of people think that James Blunt is a good song writer and performer.
I also find it wierd that some stuff, I find I should detest [by my usual taste] I actually enjoy.
I like stuff from split ends and anything written by those writers [I forget thier names] and writers like Kriss Kristofferson ,Willy Nelson, Casey Chambers, etc.
I appreciate great old timers like Perry Como, Johnny Mathis,Tony Bennett to mention a few and others with not the same tonal quality but amazing tecnique e.g. Willy Nelson. I was not a fan of Sinatra until I started doing a bit of stage singing myself THEN I started to learn about phrasing
If anyone thinks that the stuff put on by commercial radio is the bees knees do yourself a favour and start listening to community radio where you are likely to get a lesson on what great talent there is out there in the real Australia, instead of that commercially promoted crap. cheers pancho
Alright, I Know, my musical tastes were being formed in the '40s and '50s.

So true, I think we're all guilty of favouring the music that helped form our teen years. I'm as guilty as anyone else and while I can't relate to much of the music the Gen X & Y folks like, every now and again something gets through that I thinks pretty good.

The major cultural (as opposed to musical) difference between todays music and the stuff my generation grew up with is that today, musicianship seems to have taken a secondary role to studio production technique. In the sixties and seventies we all had a favourite guitarist or would rave about this sax solo or that drum lick. People like Jimi Hendrix, Carlos Santana or Rick Wakeman didn't achieve stardom because their music was cool to dance to, they did it through their breakthrough musicianship. Today's dance oriented, studio controlled scene no longer seems to need individual musical innovators. It's ironic and a bit sad that old farts like Carlos Santana are still revered as musical icons.....

Jeez I'll say ! I saw him on a youtube clip guesting with Tower of Power at Montreux and it showed what a one-trick pony he is, it was embarrassing.  He's touring shortly, and mediocre as I find him these days, the chance to get along and see Chester Thompson on the B3 and Dennis Chambers on drums is just too tempting !  :o

While I kinda agree with you that Carlos is starting to be a bit of the same old same old, the point I was trying to make is how sad it is that no new guitar heroes* have come along in the last 20 years. For old Carlos to still be at the top of the pile is a sad revelation that musicianship now takes a back seat to "da beat".  I have to agree with you on Chester's mastery of the Hammond B3.

Dunno about that one Firko, Jeff Beck is still new and fresh each time he steps out, and I saw John McLaughlin and Al di Meola last year, they continue to amaze. But in addition to these masters from the past, I've had huge nights out being blazed by Steve Vai, Satriani, and Malmsteen, all of whom push the boundaries and give you the full-body experience that used to come with every concert....and none of whom  you'll find on the pox-ridden radio... :D

Agreed, I saw Jeff Beck twice at the Enmore Theatre two years ago and he blew me away. I'd seen him a few years earlier in LA doing a fund raiser with Jimmy Vaughn for some hot rod guy with cancer as well. All of those blokes you mention are still doing great work but they're all old farts. My point is there's no new young blokes coming along to offer up something new and interesting. I really hope I'm wrong and that someone can point me in the direction of a young original muso on any instrument that can produce the goosebump moments the players GD66 mentions have.

As an aside, I saw a doco on the Ovation channel the other night showing Stephane Grapelli and Django Reinhardt in Paris in the thirties and it was amazing stuff. These guys set the bar standard for every generation of jazz players that followed.

I'm only 40 or so, I mentioned to a mate that i'd been listening to talkback radio recently as i was jack of all of these chick and bloke combos talking crap. He gave me Johny Cash greatist hits and Johnny at Falsham prison also to listen to. I Found it very entertaining- never though i'd like that stuff. I must say i did skip a couple of the ordinary tracks. My kids call it cowboy music.

Derek Trucks and Susan Tedeschi are at the Enmore on April 21 Firko, he'd just about qualify for young I reckon. And if you're after unknown musos with jaw-dropping skill, jump on youtube and take a peek at the bass pedal work on the B3 by Barbara Dennerlein....(who ?)... :o

Au contraire TOM MORRELLO (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qogtDaTwERU) from Rage against the Machine has a unique style and sound, I've seen doco's where guitarists like Stevie Vai put big wraps on him.

I saw a show on telly some time ago called 'me & Step' with one of oz's jazz names, what that old man could get out of his violin was 'mazing- And he was sitting down.
I like Hank Marvins work, but one of the all time great guitar men had to be Chet atkins.
There was some dude playing a piece on radio that was used frequently as a fill-in late 60's the piece was Orange Blossom Special picked out close to the speed of sound and whenever I'm in an old record shop I look for it. I thought it was that bloke that had the tv show 'hoedown', knowing he could play anything on anything but I can't find it on the internet.
Going back in history the only person that got me to the old Stadium to spend any meagre left-overs from apprentice pay was
 Spike Jones! cheers pancho.

Now you're really dating yourself Wal ;D We've got a video of Spike Jones performing back in the forties and he's a crack up. Funny shit. I can remember going with my parents to see Nat 'King 'Cole at the Sydney Stadium. I cried and whinged my way all the way through it to the point that my mum had to go outside with me and missed most of the gig. I can remember it clearly which is odd considering I was only four at the time ???.

I recall seeing a doco about 15 years ago which featured a jam with Eric Clapton, Chet Atkins, Hank Marvin and Ry Cooder (plus some others including James Burton, Elvis's guitarist). They were sitting in a circle in a studio just jamming and I clearly remember being impressed by Marvins picking. Prior to that I'd dismissed him as a pop lightweight like his mate Cliff Richards, but the bloke can really play. I think you'd have to to sit in with the crew he was with that day. ;)

I grew up listening to mainly home grown stuff that I saw in the local pub's like The Oils, Chisel, Angels, Radiators, Mentals & Oz Crawl.
As for O.S. stuff, Dire Straits, 10cc, The Stranglers & The Strolling Bones of course.
As for the pub scene today, dead.

Going to see Joe Cocker and George Thoroughgood on Tues nite at the Palais in Melbourne. Front row seats apparently (god knows how my mate got them!) got to be happy about that!!!! Counter attack before we go in so we can have one scotch one bourbon and one beer to get nicely primed. Maybe Julia could have subsidised the whole thing so that everybody under the age of thirty could have been exposed to real talent. Cheers Jerry

I saw the Fabulous Thunderbirds supporting George Thorogood at the Hordern Pavillion back in 1988. They kicked arse and were almost as good as George and the Destroyers. Jimmy's a good player but he's not up to the same standard his bro set though. 8)

Jimmy Vaughn and Billy Gibbons are good mates, they're both (along with Jeff Beck as well) right into hot rods and custom cars. Jimmys cars often feature in the street rod press and all three of them often play (music)on the car show scene. :)

My favorite band is Various Artists.
They have made a lot of good albums over the decades.

I saw Stevie Ray in Melbourne not long before his passing. Music so loud that my pregnant wife confirmed first movement of unborn Daniel. Must have been sticking his fingers in his ears!!! True story Jerry
