Post by: Brian Watson on January 18, 2011, 04:39:42 pm
In line with DA's ability to get a "keeper"..(then sell it)....what is the oldest / longest time you have kept a bike... I'll start it off, with my Dad..Bill..still has at home a 1960 250 Maico....owned it all this time...christ it's nearly as old as me... :) :)

I bought my 350 Maico in March or May 1970. I've had my other 350 Maico since 1980 and I've got a '73 250 Maico motor I've had since 1974. I've owned my DT1 from Hell since 1989.

Off the thread a little, I've still got the very first thing I ever bought with my own money. I saved like buggery for a year when I was about 7 or 8 to buy a toy fort for my toy soldiers. It still has pride of place on top of the bookshelf in my office. I also have a cast iron 'Sambo' moneybox I've had since I was around 5.

1974 Yamaha DT250A. Bought when I was 14, in 1990.
The next longest serving is the '94 TM125E that I bought in late 1997.

Both of them survived the poor times because they were (and still are) worth so little relative to their value as a bike to ride. Then they got to the point of being sentimentally valuable.

I purchased my 1966 Dot early in 1969 and still have it.  Mind you I did sell it twice and get it back in that time but its here for keeps now.

I still have my 1st & last racebikes from back in the day, which both happen to be Bultacos. (Not all my race bikes were Buls)

Bought the 125 Sherpa S 2nd hand for $330 in early 73 IIRC, to race juniours. Bought the 250 Pursang brand new from Donny Newell in Aug 76.

1980 PE175T purchased new in early 1980, rode it to work everyday for the 4 years of my plumbing & gasfitting apprenticeship, still have all the road gear & it still goes as good as the day I got it two sets of rear shocks & 3 overbores later.

Like my PE175T, bought it as struggling 1st year fitter and turner, rode it to work, rode it to MX meetings, raced it and rode home, rode it drunk to parties, rode in rain hail and frost.... PE never knew a fresh piston and just kept going  ;D.

Guess the RM125S I have had for the last 29 years.

As above I bought my PE175X when i was 16 and at 17y9m rode it to and from work on my L's as an apprentice motor mechanic for over a year until i bothered getting my car license.
Stone cold reliable for 9 years inc a hit and run by a car which left me with a buggered scaphoid in the wrist for ever and regretted selling it till today.
BUT as the heading says.....my very first bike,an SL70 still sits in my mums backyard as a wreck but will never scrap it.....34 years now :)

In amoungst my collection of 50 odd bikes, I still have my first bike, Kaswasaki KT250A bought new in 1975, now looking very tired and trashed in the back of the shed awaiting time and money to restore and my third bike 1978 Husky 390AMX which I have resently got going again after 30 years in bits. There is also my 1979 350 Bultaco Sherpa that was my 21st present from my parents and quite a few other bike that I have had for 30 years or more. It is actually a rare event for my to get rid of a bike, although I sold off a lot of my 1960's hondas and my 1969 650 Triumph to finance the ongoing work on the  some of my other bikes.  A few years ago, I almost bought back my 2nd bike, a 1977 Yamaha IT250D which I traded in on the Husky. I saw the remains of it in the yard of a mate who runs a  small wrecking business and was so tempted to buy it back, but passed it up as a lost cause. Having though of it though, I might have to check if it is still there next time I pay him a visit.

I've got 3 bikes that have been in the family since the 60's.
C15 BSA, Elstar Slider 350 BSA and a Malvern Star.
And 2 WDB40 BSA's that I bought from the Moorebank army auctions around 1980.
