I'm rewiring my IT175G as I don't want lights/battery etc, so aiming to have a nice simple harness. I think all I need do is connect magneto to CDI, plus a common earth for everything. Things like rectifier/regulator are only for the lighting/charging circuit I assume and can be discarded?

yes Graeme, you should need only a wire from the CDI to the coil but you may need 2 or possibly 3 from the stator to the CDI. The plug on the CDI will indicate the colors you need.

Is the ignition high voltage or dc/dc? easier would be to run a 16,000 micro farad capacitor and remove the battery.

Thanks Doc. Lozza, the existing harness is all messed up and the thing doesn't have a battery nor did it come with lights or indicators. So I am aiming to throw the existing harness and just use the simplest one I can. All I want is ignition. I figure on things like ITs and TTs of that age the battery is just for lights and half the circuits are just lighting/charging. So should be a lot cleaner and tidier without all the excess wires and bits.

Three wires from the stator to the CDI box (white/red, black and either brown or red, IIRC)
Three wires out of the CDI box:
Orange to the coil.
Black/white to the kill-switch.
Black to earth at the coil.
The other wire(s) are redundant.
