Title: MAICO 490 1981
Post by: maico949 on January 02, 2011, 11:32:06 am
I am looking to off load my Maico 490 as I can no longer race MX.
I thought I would advertise it here before I put on e-bay in case anyone is interested.
Has only been raced at "Double in the Dirt"in Brisbane for the past 2 years.
Please pm me if interested.

Will be very interesting to see what this fetches, best one for sale in Australia for a while.

They have been going at quite low prices in the U.S at the moment and with our dollar almost at parity it means a mint worked U.S Maico for $6,000 can be landed, taken through customs and everything else for under $8,000 Aus.

A lot of people have no contacts in the U.S though and are scared of the importation process. Considering that you may get close to $10,000, maybe more, who knows. I'll be watching

would it be cheaper if the seller in the states took bike apart and shippied everything separate?

Yes much. If you lived in USA and would help out you could sell bikes to us Aussie's like cold beer at a Shearers picnic.

Thats funny. i live in the states. problem is I live on east coast. If bike is on west coast $500.00 to get it here. adds up fast :'(

If you would help out it would cost under $1000.00 to import bikes to us.
Given that there some models we just never got or only had a few imported we would buy bikes. Most people selling bikes don’t want the hassle to pack bikes for shipment.
I don’t know how the US market is but guessing by the amount of quality bikes on Mark's swapmeet that don’t sell I guess it's slow. Simple really you can buy bikes in the states for $2500.00 that sell easy here for $4000 to $5000. Good Maico's sell between $6000.00 to $10,000.00. I would call this business opportunity if I lived in USA and I sold old bikes for a living.

250 motor in two boxes due to weight was $420US. That would blow it out of the water.

Brad - that would be airfreight wouldn't it? I priced a 360B motor - 72 lbs at around $650 air freight.  But have been looking at people like AZ Mike and another vintage mob who's name does not spring to mind currently who will ship to Perth for around $1250 (obviously sea freight and you have to wait).  Because as you say - there are bikes available over there that simply are not here and currently the prices are good - can buy one shipped to your door for what it costs (or even sometimes less than) here.   But I am one of those people who have been frightened off by not knowing - so if I can find a good quality bike all effort done by somebody else  ;D I would be keen.

sorry to thread hijack - small one though - what are these Maico 490 S1s being sold in the UK - are they the "new" vintage bikes being made?

They are brand new '81 spec frames with '83 engines, legal in the UK for twinshock but not over here.

JO -I am really reluctant to ask - but why not legal here - surely it would be the same as building a bike from NOS parts pulled out of a box - or are they modified in some way over and above that level of concern?

You can't run an 83 490 motor in Evo as it came out of a single shock bike. Pre 85 would be fine.

Ross..the 83 and 81 engines are very different. The later engines have geared primary drive while the '81 has a chain driven primary. The '82 engine in an 81 frame should be fine because it's essentially the same engine as the '81 model even though it's originally from a linkaged single shock bike.

Oh. Ok. Can't argue with that. Good reason not to run 'em in Evo.....

sorry - that makes it clearer - i thought they weren't legal becasue they were being made today - didn't click to the class problems with later model bits in earlier model frames - but it could be used for pre 85 (in some form?).
