Title: Someone to ream triple clamps from 30mm to 35mm
Post by: Doc on January 19, 2008, 08:51:40 pm
I need a pair of 30mm TM125 triple clamps reamed out to suit 35mm forks. Would anyone be interested in this small cash job as it's a bit out of my scope and time needed to get out and about to machine shops is very rare at present. Preferably someone on the east coast to keep the postage rates reasonable. either that or if someone has a pair of TS125/TM125/TS185 or similar forks or even a pair decent inners reasonably priced I'd be interested also. Many thanks Doc

Can't you use TM250 triple clamps Doc?

I can Firko yes but I have extra 125 clamps sitting here wasting. If I had a pair of 30mm forks I'd use them. I've a few good pairs of 35mm forks ready to go and figured it's probably cheaper/easier to get the clamps reamed to suit what I have. Actually the pair I wish to have reamed are at 33mm right now to suit TS185er forks but I can't for the life of me find any drum brake axle under type lowers to suit 33mm forks and the leading axle ??? I can't use these forks in pre '78 as they are '79 model but damn I wish I could cause they feel perfect.  :(

ER is 33mm. taking 30mm clamps out to 35mm, isnt that too much? you must have plenty of meat in them then?

sorry quicky, just noticed your post after I edited mine. I have er185 at present but the lowers are the issue. I can't find anything that will fit without reverting to 125 or 250 forks. Thanks anyway  :)
Leith TM125 and 250 clamps are the same item only with different size holes. 33 out to 35 is only 1.0mm of material removed all round..not a lot..I got them to 33mm from 30mm myself but it took me forever  ;)

Going from 30 to 35 is a bit beyond a reamer Doc. The time/cost it would take to set both clamps up either on a mill or the faceplate on a lathe you could just laser/water cut some ali or CNC the whole lot. I have machined several sets of triples/stems and for the work involved starting from scratch was less work, plus I could reduce the offset  ;D
How did you go to 33mm???  ???

Is this what you need...?

Oddly enough these are the same forks they kept on using in the TF 125/185

it's only from 33 to 35mm Loz and I used a bloody big drill!!  :o actually a rotary tool with a 30mm spiraband did the job but it really did take forever + 1 day and the result is close but not perfect as it was done by hand.. I don't particularly go for billet stuff, 2 reasons, I prefer the stock look and making clamps is a whole mess of expensive trouble for such little gain  :-\ ..

cyclegod thats the units alrighty!..$49us eh..about $58 or so aussie..if only they were local.. :P

I have a pair of leading axle 35mm RL250 forks sitting in the US. Must get them over oneday soon also  :-\

this is how she's coming together, remembering it's built entirely from parts...cheap parts! You also have to picture a '75 pearl yellow tank, white/translucient guards, metalic silver frame ala RL250, polished motor, black hubs and chrome bars to finish off...just to be different  ;) I like to piece everything together first and then go to town knowing I won't have any hold ups waiting for missing bits  ;) shocking photo sorry..my camera is just about 'ted I'd say  :(

Wreckers in the farm areas should have the good old Suzuki  agi TF125/185 forks , try Sunriasia motorcycles in Mildura Vic or Rochester Motorcycles Vic.

Doc if you're running triples with a lot of offset (TM125) and forks with a leading axle you could end up with a very unstable bike. There won't be much trail there. It will probably tend to plough the front in corners and be twichy in a straight line.

Reducing the offset on my XT's by only 5mm made a massive difference to the handling.

Brent

PS  Sorry to be a nay sayer...................................

HMMMMMMMMMMMM maybe I should read things better first :-[

I take it from the earlier post that you're not using leading axle forks.........................

Just let me open my mouth a bit further and put the other foot in too....................................

:D no probs Brent..33mm axle under type lowers would have solved all my problems but open to any option  so long as they are not leading axle  :)

I have plans for getting hold of some TF forks for my TM-S 185, I also have a nice chunky set of RM100A triples (30mm) so there is plenty of room in them to ream out

Doc,
There is a shop in Albion called solo tooling that has done a few sets for me, last ones cost $50 cash.
Does top work, but don't expect same day service.

Hi Doc are you still looking for someone to take your 30mm clamps to 35mm??
I can do this for about $50.00.

Also if your looking to get items from the US to Aussie send me an email and
I'll give you my phone number to have a chat I ship containers from the US every 3-5 months.[/email]

thanks a million for the offer Speed but the clamps are all done now..the reason I mainly buy small items from the US is the shipping..I rarely look at complete engines, frames and wheels and such because the post outweighs the need. A little space in a container sure could be utilized for this type of item and make them much more financially viable ;)

Doc, to give you an idea it would cost you about $65-85 AUD to ship a motor the size of a KX500 and about the same for a small frame, wheels about $30ea
So if you would like to know more let me know ......

wow!..let me scour the net and I'll get back to you on this Speed..shit that's good..makes some of the complete motors I see much more enticing..be only small engines like TM125 or part thereof ;) I just had a bit of a splurge in the US around xmas time so at present I have all bases covered but one never knows what will turn up tomorrow  ;) thanks for the offer regardless
