Title: Farleigh Castle 2011
Post by: pirie593 on November 14, 2010, 06:52:15 pm
If you are at all interested in competing at Farleigh Castle in 2011, use this thread to ask all the questions.  Organiser Dave King can deal with the British end, and Johnny O, Holeshot Buddy, 090 or myself can deal with the Oz end.

It is a fantastic event that should be on all VMX riders' bucket list.

Hopefully, Rusty, Brad and John will keep bumping the thread with pics of them riding at the event this year (just look at John's avatar).

Get a motor home. John and I split one that cost us 750-800 pounds.
Transport and accommodation .

What a great airial shot.. Farleigh is without a doubt the best Vintage MX race you could ever attend. I would say you could do the race for about $3500 roughly.

I'll try and help here.. We entered on the Farleigh Castle website and got a 1 event International licence at sign on at Farleigh and we didn't seem to need any sort of clearance.
Support classes are Open Twinshock (Evo in Aus), over 40 Twinshock, over 50 Twinshock, a couple of Pre '90 classes and a Modern Vets class.
The main event is the Twinshock MX des Nations for teams (3 or 4 riders)from each country riding Twinshock bikes.

MA also extended the insurance cover for the 5 riders competing overseas (Jeff Leisk included) on the basis that they all had National licences.

The cost will depend on how much time you spend related to the Farleigh event.  The minimum time you arrive before the racing on Saturday might best be given by Brad and John (Rusty arrived 2 weeks before, I arrived 1 week before and Brad and John arrived the Wednesday before).  A motorhome is essential for staying in the paddock during the event.

My costs (approx);

Airfare   $2000
Motorhome   $750
Entry fee   $200
Racing costs (tyres, fuel etc) $200
Food, refreshments etc $500

Total of around $3650.  I purchased a bike over there, but haven't included that cost.  I am leaving it there to ride again next year.  Bikes were supplied FOC to other riders.

Can you guys give us an idea of the competition. How long were the Support Class races?
How did Johnnie , Brad , etc find the pace- Was it as quick or quicker than the Nats here in Australia?

For a Entry  log on to www.farleighcastle.co.uk   , BUT  we wont be taking entries for at least 3 weeks yet.

Insurance can be delt with in 2 ways.  If you have a australian MCA licence you can get your federation to contact sonia goggin  at the ACU in england for start permission. Its that easy.

Or just turn up and take out a 1 event licence at the track.      Shayne king used the first option.

If you are a ozzie/NZ  but lives in the uk just turn up and do a day licence.

We turned away over 200 entries in 2010, 2011 will be no different. Please dont leave entering till a few months before the event or you will be dissapointed.   I will post on here when entries are open.

There are classes to fit any age and ability so dont worry about being out of your depth...you wont.

Bikes...if you want to bring your own bike contact david white CEO at motorcycling australia as he is organising a container to transport bikes direct to farleigh castle.   How cool to be working out of a sea container! very factory!!.

Expect many current GP guys to be riding the event in 2011... i have already got josh coppins coming back and hopefully ben townley, both on 89 RC 500s in the evo class.

I also have been talking to the worlds most famous MAN,  expect him to be with us along with a 1980s USA MX megastar!

12 mins + 1.     I would say the nations race was fast  but the support classes going on Rustys pace was similar to your national series.

The moto's were 20mins for the Des Nations class and about 15mins for the support classes on a rough natural terrain track.
The competition in the Des Nations was very tough and the pace up front was waaay faster than the Nats in Australia.
You need to be pretty good to get into the top 20 in that class. Support races are definately easier except the one with Josh Coppins in it!

Dave , so you are saying we can have a one day license  on the day ( without holding a  national license) as long as we are pre entered . If that is correct , that would suit me fine .

yes.

The start ...... 15 secs + 5 sec board and forward falling gate.  Slight uphill.

The 2010 event was 2 days of racing, with the Friday reserved for machine examination and sign-on.  The race format for support events had to be shortened a bit after Saturday saw insufficient time to complete 2 races for each class.  The MXdN races remained unchanged.  Whether or not practice and 2 rounds can be slotted into 1 day remains to be seen.  Dave ????

The start line is perpendicular to the left side of the start straight which ends with a tight left turn around a tree.  Hence, the inside line is quickest.  If you get a choice, start down at the left side on the gate.

Out of first corner; holeshot.

After the first turn, a mad rush along the Finish straight towards a 90 degree left hander.  Plenty of mud early Sunday.  Rusty and Brad are in there somewhere. (and that also might be John's helmet ????)

please note a date change has benn forced on us by youthstream{the italian mafia company with help from insiders at the FIM who run the MXGPs and MXoN}  they have changed the date of the modern MXoN in france to our date.  we will possibly go 1 week earler or 1 week later.  i will post up next week my decision.

Dave, one week earlier will be direct clash with Australian Vintage Championships.  One week later would give chance for riders to attend both the Oz titles and Farleigh.  And we musn't forget to keep the gap between the Namur event and Farleigh as short as possible  ;D  ;D

Yeah Brad, you probably think there's some unfinished business, and a point to be made still over there. You guys did us proud but with more luck and management, a better result was probably expected/hoped for. You guys can certainly ride well enough.
Or is it that you like getting your picture in VMX mag playing grab d.ck to a plastic kangaroo!
Mallam did a fair story of Farleigh in the mag. Just reread it again last night.

I expected more pics of the Aussies at Farleigh seeing that VMX is an Aussie mag, (at least some on track shots) but maybe i am biased ;).
It really is the best VMX meeting on the planet.

Be interesting to hear a bit more about the Belgium team decision to go home early.
I imagine they wouldn't have made the call without a serious gripe/problem.
Title: Re: Farleigh Castle 2011
Post by: JohnnyO on December 31, 2010, 11:12:22 am
I believe the main problem for the Belgians was they had a plane to catch Sunday night and the meeting was running behind time with 3 motos to complete Sunday instead of 2 because of a hiccup on Saturday and the 3rd moto was the last race very late in the day.

I entered two last year but if you think you are fit enough to ride them both you are kidding yourself. I never bothered riding the second class. I entered the one this year.
This will end up on it's ear if MA backs out of the sending of a container. How the hell are about a dozen guys going to find a bike to ride otherwise?

Team australia were done proud by rusty, martin russell and crocodile dundee.   we all had a ball especialy when rusty got way out of shape on the 490 maygo and ended up bailing complete with bike into the swamp!!!!!!!  i pissed myself laughing when i went by and passed him, all caught on headcam fortunatly.  Team USA were outstanding, stanton posted 2nd fastest quali on a 250!!!!!!. chuck sun was simply superb entertainment on and off track.    Brad, john and john we missed you.

just got back had a ball we only ended up with 3 riders as steve baker
broke his hand a week before going he still went over but couldnt ride
which made it hard with 3 riders we actually finished ahead of denmark in each race
but they had 4 riders in the end it was close only 10 points between 11th and 9th
all the bikes had jetting issues and a few other problems but they generally went good
just riding with all the ex world and ama champs was unreal had jim gibson on the line next to me
track was awsome best track i have ridden (second best was at farleigh last year) ha
huge crowd with aussie flags waving at various points around track was unreal took some helmet cam footage hope it comes out ok will load a heap of pictures on ozvmx soon
thanks to dave king and matt milsom for his bike.you wouldnt believe it but started the 490 maico
for last mxdn race and it blew a base gasket doh so matty gave me his black super trick 490 with a schmitz engine and reed he had not even ridden it yet i was the test pilot ha
ran great even got a good start i can see why they put reed valves on them
tm bill was there kept us laughing all weekend and the amount of legends there was amazing
walk through the pits and they were everywhere bit jet lagged will put more on later

Oh so you can now legally race in the over 50's Dave.. even though you did last year ;)
We really missed not being there this year and are definately aiming to be back next year! Sounds like it'll be even bigger again especially if the yanks bring some late 80's superstars.. I bet they hate getting beaten!

I was fortunate enough to get to farleigh this year all be it as a spectator  ;D having been there back in the day (79 was the last time i think ) and with what i have read / seen on forums and magazines i thought i knew what to expect  ;) WRONG    ::) ::) unless you experience the event ist hand (even as a spectator) you cant possibly begin to imagine just how big and how great the event is  8)
The thing that really amazed me is that the guys who put together and run this event do it with Swiss precision yet maintain an atmosphere that is so casual and  relaxed . Over the past 40 odd years i have attended 100s of MX events and this event would have to be in the top 3 (probably #1 if i rode  :D )

The quality of racing and speed of of the top riders was outstanding , if anyone is considering entering the event dont under estimate the level of fitness required as that track got bloody rough at the end .A big shout out to Rusty (holeshot buddy) the bloke did you guys real proud  8) i think Russ was on the ground for less than 6 days i dont know if thats the secret to avoiding jet lag but theres no way i could do that. Rusty really held his own on bikes he had never ridden before and you blokes should be bloody proud of him he was a top ambassador for Aussie VMX  :)

I know 125cc racing raises the odd eyebrow on here but the Poms vs frogs pre 83 125 challenge was brilliant racing , over 50 of the buggers and if you missed a shift you lost 10 places thats how close the racing was .

The Riders
The talent pool at Farliegh was both wide and deep   :) from former world champions and MXDN winners to former top national championship contenders to the club level riders everybody gave it their all.
Stand out performaces for me were Mark Eastwood who is such a nice bloke as well as a super quick rider and has a real passion for the sport .
Jeff stanton , all the yanks were bloody good blokes but JS has still got it  :) the guy is super quick and super fast and though i never saw him race in the day it was as if the clocks had been turned back.

Dave Thorpe , Dave and his offsider Dickie Dye rode every race alternativley over the weekend for charity . a huge effort and both of them were still smiling at the end of the event.

Neil Hudson , Neil had his swansong ride at Farliegh on the super trick YZM 500 and still looked as smooth and fast as he did 30 yrs ago when he lifted the 250cc world title.

There were so many stand out performances but all those who competed put on a spectacular show for the very large crowd.

A special mention must go out to team spain who really looked the part , what they lacked in speed they made up for in style even if some rude git from down under was heard to nickname them the Tangerine Armada

The bikes
From the trick YZM 500 Neil Hudson rode to the clubmans maico the standard of bikes was superb, im always impressed by the std of bikes in Australia but this really took it to a new level. Personally im not sold on the use of modern conventioal forks on twin shocks , but hey when in Rome  :-\

In the past iv'e been vocally critical of single shock bikes converted to twin shocks and also pre 90 racing  ::)

Well i will pubicly say that why it still seems a bit strange the std of modification from linkage to twinshock was in all cases i saw first class and a casual spectator would never pick the anomolly.

The pre 90 racing was fantastic and again the std of machine was absoultley stunning , stepping away from the debate weather we need them on this side of the world or not , you cant deny a full field of pre 90 500s is bloody fantastic to watch and hear.

The event
From a spectators point of view i dont believe there was any thing the organisers could have done better  :) entry for the 3 days was a poultry 20 quid the best 20 quid i spent on my entire trip. To put it into perspective my youngest daughter ( who hates all thing motorcycling with a passion after being dragged to events all through her childhood ) came along to the event to spend time with dad on the condition that she got to stay at a nice B&B and went shopping in Bath  ;D well all that went out the window ,after the fri night party and Madness tribute band she decided that she would stay at the track and party again sat night staying in my tent and relgating me to the cramped comfort of the rental Astra ;D leaving the pre paid posh B&B in bath empty  ::) But you get the picture this event has somthing for everybody

How these guys run such a slick opperation yet maintain a fun and relaxed enviroment for all i dont know , but im bloody glad they do ;D

The hard luck story

Steve Baker (Odd1) was due to ride for the Aussie team but broke his hand a couple off weeks out  :( Steve kindly offered me his ride as soon as he realised he wasn't able to ride  :) I shyly declined due to a lack of fitness and talent  ;D

Steve still attended the event and even worked as a marshall on the Saturday  8) steve was to ride a husky prepared by legendary Pommy bike builder and technical magician Rod Spry  :) Steve and I along with my dad travelled up to rods Wshop post event and were treated to a tour and some legendary Lancashire hospitality  8) but that trip deserves a thread of its own.

Bottom line this is an event every VMXer must have on their bucket list , I will try to return next year and enter one of the support classes as to compete in the main event i will miss spectating  ::)

Thanks again to the organisers for putting on a brilliant event  8)

Farleigh Castle 2011 was all go for me, i had the flights booked even kept the wife happy by tacking on a trip to Europe & USA then Guiseppe the great changed the Italian World MXGP date which meant that the Farleigh Castle event had to be shifted so i ended up missing it by 5 days.
The closest i got to anything motocross whilst i was in UK was driving past a natural terrain track about 90 miles north of London beside the M6.
Then on the way home i dropped by Glen Helen and missed the Oldtimers International MX by the same 5 days, again the closest i got was taking a picture of the start strait.

I will post some soon  :) i just want to check with Rod that its ok  :) rod showed both steve and I awesome hospitality and was very happy for us to take photographs and videos  ;D But i think it would only be right to check with him first about posting them publicly . The visit to Rods place was equally as exciting as the farleigh trip , Rod is a real Artisan and he has some amazing bikes and an incredible knowledge of the history of the sport. Every bike told a story and you could almost taste the history within  8)
Steve probably has better photos than mine as my box brownie aws getting a bit tired by then  ::)
Will check its cool and then both Steve and I can post them  :)
