Title: Machining down Yamaha hubs.
Post by: Nathan S on January 18, 2008, 06:47:58 pm
The generic Yamaha conical hubs have a rib that runs across them (not the two that run around the outside of the brake drum). It's roughly 5mm wide, and 4mm high, and looks like it exists just to help the casting process.

If I was to machine it off, and then fit that hub to a race bike, would it come and bite me on the arse?

What about the same bit on a rear hub?

(I'm thinking of building a bling bike, because I obviously need another project. But I still haven't come to terms with the idea of having a bike that I don't ride, so it'd have to be race-able).

ok, here's what you do,
machine em off and build bike bling!
race that sucker hard,
if the wheels break, let all of us know before we do it.

Depends how good the machinist is.I tend to think the ribs are there for a good reason

Don't....! Would you cut the gusseting off your frame??? Fancy looks or race track safety what do you rate first?
Nathan I know very well a "fool" that drilled holes ,even counter sunk and polished them in a sidecar wheel hub (no brakes) for a Bling pretty look, wheel collapsed on our practice track and my boy oops I mean the lad broke a clavicle and punctured a lung in the resulting flip.  :-[ Tim

If Nathan tries it & we don't hear from him then we will know it's a bad idea ;D
