Title: Yamaha Z Spokes
Post by: TT on October 20, 2010, 07:52:37 pm
Can someone tell me what years Yamaha had the Z spoke wheels, please?
And did those years come with gold rims here or O.S.?

1984 gold, or at least the '84 YZ 125 I had here had both. Still have the rear wheel if you need one.
Cheers,
K

Z-spokes: 1984 & 85 YZs, and all three years of the IT200.
Gold rims: 1982~85 for the YZs, and 1985 for the IT200 (and maybe 1985?).

Z-spoke rims have 32 holes, the normal spoked rims have 36.

Yes, done them. Best if you buy then from John Titmans or Ash's spoked wheels and get them to properly re-do the dimples with a cutter so the heal of the nipple sits at the at the correct angle for the hubs. The universal drilled 32 spoke excels dont have the right hole positioning in the dimples for correct angles for the Z spoke hubs, well at least not the drum rear, i cant remember if the front rim needed modifying for the front Z spoke hub. Just running a drill bit through to try and change the angle doesnt work, you need to modify the dimple so the nipple sits in the right spot as that governs the spoke angle. You may need to use larger OD nipples though. The only place i have seen that has completely undrilled blank Excels is here

Which is the other option.

I didnt expect all that drama, although the spokes on those hubs do come out at an odd angle.
Can i take it others have had problems with the standard rims?....I'v got several cracks in the ones iv got......

Its not really a drama or hard to do, its the norm when your talking bikes from 1980's and older, they are not the current range of Mxers so no companies are not mass producing rims to suit old bikes with drum hubs, everything is custom drilled or modified to suit the applicatio. Many wheel places specilaize in doing that. You might be able to buy new genuine rims from Yamaha if that sounds easier to you, but really all you need to do is phone or email a rim supplier such as the 3 above and tell them what bike you want it for what colour rims and then they will drill them do them for you they should have all the data on your wheels, if not they will ask you to measure a few things or take photos to send them. How hard is that? The hardest part for you is to hand over the $ for the new rims :)

Yes the old rims are known to crack after a hard life, its nothing out of the ordinary.

How much does the redrilling cost?

Based on the info here and other info I've dug up, I have a 1985 YZ250 front end.
Which is a crock because it's not Vinduro legal as is.  >:(
I'll have to swap back to the original and get shorter shocks for the rear to suit.

POM - I can not remember as ive usually had it done with suppled rim. Ages ago John Titmans quoted $70 but i dont know if that was for 1 or 2 rims, i think it was pair. Just phone them up or one of the other Wheel guys.

Tony - what bike did you want to put the 85 YZ250 front end on?

Buchannon's in the States are the only ones with new Z spokes....any good wheel  builder will be able to drill the rims correctly....you will find when you go to dismantle the wheels you'll end up with some broken spokes, hence Buchannons to the rescue and John Titman can do the wheels. Buchannons are great to deal with....The wonderfull world of computers eh.

Nah, I've got a bike with the front end on it and I want to get rid of it for something Vinduro legal.

Buchannons spokes are stainless and half the price of Yamaha spokes and I'm pretty sure you can only get one end now (front or back...not sure). The DID rims of that vintage suffer from bad corriosion aswell.

It would be nice to have it right but you shouldn't worry about it too much, I haven't been to a Vinduro yet where any body cares too much.
If it was an 85 front end then it would be a disc front end.
If its a drum then its Pre 85 legal anyway.
