Paul,
       The numbers didn't ever indicate if it was a MX or GS, they were basically the same bike, just things like mufflers and lights, brake torque arms were different . You need a parts book to tell all the differences.

  Paul,
        This site has the 81 engine parts book, looks like there are a few diferent ratio's between the MX & GS
