Hi Snowy,

It looks like the frame is a Frontera Mk 10 250 (1978ish)
The engine is much earlier, it looks like a 1970 360.

PM me if you'd like to talk about how to get it going again...

Cheers,
Mark.

Thanks For your reply Mark, but this bike is early 70`s,? left brake pedal, boat tail,Twin spark plug/coil set up?????????. Thanks Mark

Hi Snowy,
Sorry to contradict Mark, What you have is a M18 El Bandito frame fitted with a M70 El Montadero(enduro) engine. It has slighly different gear ratios to the original bandit engine and a heavier flywheel, apart from that they are the same, both were 360 cc, had the same cylinder and piston. The heads were slightly different compression ratios as well. The bandit had a single coil ignition, the El Mont has a double plug ignition and the heaviest flywheel ever put on a dirt bike!!
Title: Re: Help, Just had a thousand beers.
Post by: Snowy 76 on January 12, 2008, 11:11:22 pm
Thanks Moto,   for the reply, Not wrong about the flywheel, was going through the engine parts the flywheel was heavier than the complete crank/conrod assembly,my mate had this running back in the 80`s? but kept trashing the crank key, since had the crank rebuilt/repaired but never re-assembled, not a Bultaco man, what was the Bandito`s place in the hole show. Hope I dont Have to put on 60KG and start swearing like blue blazes? ??????

Was the Bandito a motocrosser ? even with a sore head I think the Bandito might be a interresting project, any more info on this bike would be great, web sites etc. Thanks Mark.

Was the Bandito a motocrosser ?

It was marketed as a motocrosser. It was, in fact, a dire plan hatched by the Franco regime to lure young men from around the world into committing violent suicide.

The legendary Harro cries tears of blood over his drowned rat Bandito at Crawford River a couple of years ago.
Where are ya Harro? The forum misses your wit, charm and wonderful exchanges with Nathan. Come back baby!

Snowy,
The Bandito was sold in different configurations, a 350 and 360,one as a scrambler with 21 inch front wheel and scramble type handlebars knobly tyres, the other was a TT bike with a 19 inch front wheel and dirt track tyres ,different clip on bars and a more HP cylinder. The model you have has the boatail, the next model had alloy mudguards Just about all that were produced were exported from Spain, mainly to America. They were sucessful in TT racing and desert racing.
The engine as you have seen is very robust (heavy) the gears (4 speed) are bigger than some used in a truck!! but they are also a reliable engine when set up properly.
Parts are readily available for them. Might pay to look into the couple of gears needed to change from Montadero to Bandito ratios if you plan to race it seriously? as the Montadero gears can be a bit too widely spaced for Mx use, but you do get used to it after a while.
My Montadero has engine no 70 00231 and has been a good reliable, racing? hack over the last few years.
PM me if you need any more info.

Settle down mark,
I don't think this would be the bike to go out and challenge Rossco400's new bike in pre 70 on,

could be OK on the dirt track though, can you have it ready for the Jack Hogg,

big Kev's Bandito (ex husky harro's) bike.

Harro was looking down to find that the air cleaner wasn't connected to the back of the carby, one of those high tech hose clamp things was missing, whats a bit of mud anyway!
He always boasted that he had the best tool kit of anyone in the pits, every tool brand new, never used !!! Come back Harro.

Hi Mark,

Yep Moto you're right - I must have got an extra digit there and got 180 mixed up with 18...
It would still be fun to get right - its really a Bandito with lower gearing and a smaller carby.
They are a bit rare for Bully's as they have a right hand kickstarter and a gear driven primary gear.
And they do have plenty of go - even though they are a bit heavy.

It'd be good to see you in the Pre 65/70 class against my mighty Mk1 Pursang!

Cheers,
Mark.

PS And that is a very fine looking gentleman - the ex Bandito owner I mean...

Yes it did,and a much larger(heavier) clutch than the normal Bult unit fitted to all the other models.

Hey Snowy,
did you have a feather of?

You have got a great project there, I've got a 69 El Monta boat tail in the shed bought in Bendigo about 15 years ago, and apart from checking the bore have not done anything to it. Your efforts may inspire me.

Moto, I didn't know about the tt version of the bandito, number one son wants to mod the above bike into some sort of cafe racer thing, he might not be to far of the mark. He has been out voted, I reckon they look pretty good in dirt track attire.

All the best with the resto

I prefer the boat tail. I love these old Banditos, they've got more soul than a truck full of Lobitos.
OOPS! I can feel el Presidente bubbling away, ready to attack again. I'd better duck out of the way.

G`day Rosco, I think they where alloy, but you`d have to be a bloody Accountant to afford them , Vintage Husky advertises them.

Rosco,
The originals were Stainless steel, I have an original front from my RT that you can have a look at. You will have trouble getting s/s.I think Snowy's alloy option is about as good as your going to get. The s/s come up on evilbay sometimes.

Harro, you lovable, sweet, caring and sharing love puppy! You and the Swede are welcome to pop into the Kompound for a cold Kozel or two at CD5. Have you got another bike yet? Im sure either Husky 67 or Husky 61 will have their collections on hand for a loaner. It should be a good double party on Saturday night with the two camps combining for a gastronomic blowout.

Brad,
Dust at Moto Mayhem got the best of me and I called back to the vintage boys saw Mark Austin and Snowy then headed over to the Super Moto to catch up with Rev Head Lovett and Brett Bull who was down from the coast  looking after the Husky Team from Feeneys.
I guess you will be going to CD5 if so I will catch up and say howdy over a cold one.....speaking of cold ones there Firko, my Swedish mate and I will most definitley call in to the Kevlar Komplex for fuel and thanks for the kind words and if Shoey or Andrews offers I will on the Huskies in a flash old habits die hard.
See you boys at Barleigh Ranch

Harro...I guess you'll be competing with Johnny Berhens for a spot on any of the 'Husky Brothers' bikes. Even though they'll have 147 bikes between 'em, Berhens did have a tendency to destroy anything under him so there may not be too many left by day three.
