Title: WooHoo, I got me a YZ125X!
Post by: Nathan S on January 11, 2008, 08:47:21 am
Thanks to Snowy76, I am now the proud but somewhat dubious owner of a rough, incomplete 125X :)

(Happy now DJR? ;) My wife isn't, but the t).

Questions:
1. Rear hub - A/C type or D/E/F type? The difference is the spacing between the sprocket and the spokes.
2. Wheel rims - external lip (like a C) or no (like a D)?
3. What size carby? Are they they same as a D/E carby?
4. Are the front hubs the early type with the little webs between the non-brake-side spokes, or the later type without?

Looking for a proper X barrel and head, rather than the DT parts that are currently fitted...
And race-spec plastics.
And a fuel tank (bloody HL500 replicas, grumble grizzle...).
A rear wheel would be nice too.

Nathan I can help with a tank and see scott in Nowra for all the other stuff as I know he has nearly finshed his X and should be able to supply you with every thing you need PM me or call me as I may also be able to help with the other stuff off a C model.

Hi Nathan, i have a few parts for an x. I have a frame, swing arm and shock, very nice pipe and a rear wheel that has the dished rear sprocket. I have an mx125B with a dished sprocket but dont know if the x had one. I sold the tank with a HL replica lot of parts  ::) I will look for a head and barrel as well. The x i just sold was very original and had normal rims. Here is a photo to compare.Sorry about the crap quality! PS muffler is incorrect.

WooHoo Nathan,

You will love the X model Nathan, they are such a cool little bike.

The rear rim is the same as the D-E model

The front hub is the same as the C model

The rear hub is out on its own Nathan, but I will measure my one up because I believe a C or a D will fit.

The carb for the X is a 34mm.

If you dont want Brad X pipe I will be glad to buy it of him though.

Hey Nathan how did ya go with the YZ bits ?.
Title: Re: WooHoo, I got me a YZ125X!

Didn't bother in the end. Woulda been nice, but the arse-fork for both of us + finding the money + heat from my usually very patient wife (after I dragged 4 bikes back from Snowy's place yesterday)... I just figured 'stuff it' and let it go.
Thanks for your offer to help though. :)
If anyone reading this just spent $197 on early 80s YZ125 bits, then they should contact me if they want to sell off some of the bits.

Looks like YZ360A is gonna sort me out with most of the parts I need. :) Brad is not yet off the hook though... :)

DJR is welcome to Brad's pipe: One of the good things about my bike is the pipe. Funnily enough, the bike had been sitting in the open, in a coastal environment for years, and yet the pipe and forks are still quite good.

Nathan if you plan to use the fork cannisters I have some brand new ones, let me know. By the way, the YZ100C is a very similar bike to the 125X. They share allot of parts.

Wow, very nice. Wish I had some spare cash to bid on that. I had an X a few years ago, picked it up as a rolling chassis for $25 from the local tip. Managed to scrounge up enough parts to build it then went and sold it to a local to raise money for my HL500... Wish I hadn't.

Sure is a nice collection of parts to go with this one. I'll watch the bidding with interest.

Yeah Graeme its a nice bike and with all those spare parts it would be a good buy. But selling a YZ125X to help build a HL500 ::) When I got my one and first rode it I was surprized at how good it went ;D

The X model is just your basic 'C'-125 model, but because yamaha in all their wisdom had already designated the year (1975)before's YZ125 a 'C' it was a model in front of its big brothers the YZ250/360B. So hence for 1976 you get the YZ400C the YZ250C the YZ125X and the YZ100C. So then the following year 1977 all the models are named 'D'.

i wouldn't have a clue of the numbers sold, but i do remember riding a 125x back in about 79 and was real impressed. it went like a rocket and was so slim and light,
loved it!
unfortunately for the "X", the seat/tank often dissapears to some tt500 owner somewhere and the forks also fell victim to the "too hard basket" and so it is that the beautiful "X" is not everyones cup of tea.
my sheds too full of crap already but i'd love one.
currently chipping away at a mx125c copy that will run the same motor as the X.

Graeme's HL was a real one, not a replica, which puts it a few rungs up the ladder (but still below the 125X). ;D

The X and Cs were sneered at just a couple of years ago, but have rapidly become quite popular.

Yamaha and Suzuki seemed to go a bit mental for a little while, trying to out do each other: three different model YZ125s in a ~24 month period, and four(?) RM125s in about three years.

The X is where Yamaha got the upper hand over Suzuki, but I'm not yet convinced that a YZ125X is a better pre-78 race bike than a YZ125D is. The X is definitely prettier than the D.

Post by: Graeme M on January 19, 2008, 11:11:25 pm
The YZ125X and RM125S were compared in the first issue of ADB. And it was for that very reason (and my love for the looks of the RM125M/S) that I bought my YZ-X and soon after an RM125S. I then sold both to get the HL, and while I don't regret buying the HL, I sure do regret selling those 125s... I still have the phone number of the guy I sold the X to, maybe I should chase it up some time? And while the X and S bikes are only 75/76 models, they are far more interesting Pre78 racers to me than the YZ-D or RM-A.

Oh, and the RM-S is infinitely better looking than anything else from then with the possible exception of the 77 CR125... I just love downpipes.

Post by: Phil on January 20, 2008, 12:08:00 am

I'm one of those bastards who chopped up a 125X for the parts. In this case I used the wheels on a YZ 125 A, the tank and seat ended up on my mates trick SL125 and the engine got sold on the Trading Post. The rest went to the tip. I'm sorry now but it wasn't worth anything then.

Post by: DJRacing on January 20, 2008, 07:40:01 am
Nathan I would agree with you that the 'D' would certainly be a better race bike for pre78. The motor design is much better without the linkage gear shift, the suspension is a vast improvement over the 'X' and the single sided airbox is much better. On a whole the 'D' is leaps and bound better than the 'X' as a race bike.
I have the bike for you then Graeme, if you like down pipes and hot bits for the bike. In fact I would love this bike myself. I will let you be the judge on the best looking '75-'76, 125 bike of the period. ;D

Old Phil, you nasty man ;) just because 'you' say it wasnt worth anything back then you took it to the tip? And obviously vmx was up and running at the time, but to take an old motocross bike to the tip isnt showing allot of love for the sport or machinery, esspecially just because it wasnt worth much. I take it that money (the value of a bike) is worth more to you than preserving old motocross bikes ???

Nathan please ::) while the X is a nice bike it was never an RM 125 A beater and only really on par with the 1975 RM 125 S  in performance ;)

The suzukis are better looking , faster, and more desirable   :)

10 world championships in a row cant be wrong 1975 - 1984  ;D

PS still a fleet of Suzukis and a YZ 125A Nogouchi here for you to test ride when your ready  :)

DJ, It may seem that I was insensitive to break up a YZ 125X but you have to look at it in the context of the time. It was 1989 and Evo or pre 1978 was over 10 years away and not even being mentioned as a possibility in the future. The bike wasn't in the best of condition and wasn't worth restoring based on the fasion of the time. In overall history of the sport,  the 125 X, didn't enjoy a great reputation. It wasn't one of Yamahas finest creations.
I'd like to think that the parts got two or three vintage bikes of the time onto the track and the bike wasn't dismantled in vain. In hindsight I should have saved it but who was to know.

As far as preserving old bikes, I think I've redeemed myself since by rescuing, restoring and racing over 15 bikes over 20 years. I think I've shown that my "love" of the sport is indeed valid as I'm still doing it long after many have moved on to other hobbys.

...

From ADB #5, RM125A feature/YZ125X comparison:
Quote
The RM125A is as good a motorcycle, overall, as the YZ125X. Both have good and bad points, sure, but overall, we'd say about even.
The gist of it all was that the YZ goes better, has better forks, but was a bit harder to ride and has less-good rear suspension.

From Yamaha Dirtbikes (starts off talking about the YZ/RM 100s):
Quote
With 18hp on tap, the 100 was a lot more powerful than its only significant comeptitor, the Suzuki. But the Suzuki's suspension was better and steering more precise making the two a pretty even match. The same was true with the 125. With almost identical top end, it was the greater midrange that gave the YZ the advantage over the RM, but it was really close. The suspension and steering on both machines was very good making the two almost inseparable, except for the $35 higher price of the YZ. Machine performance wouldn't be able to make the one [sic] a best seller over the other; that would have to be left to the advertising people.

Just bring your YZ over for CD5, and I'll find the money somehow...

I owned both a C and an X from new.
I raced both in MX, DT and enduro as well as a friend's RM125S (thanks Chooky).
I sorted out the X rear suspension by letting out some of the gas from the shock.
After that the rear end was much better in my opinion than either the C or the S.

Differences between C and X:
White C and Yellow X.
34mm carby up from 30mm (with bigger boot to airbox).
Air cannister forks.
Longer travel rear.
520 chain up from 428.

1974 YZ 125 A SERIAL # 453-000101 - 007730

1975 YZ 125 B SERIAL # 453-100101 - 101620

1976 YZ 100 C SERIAL # 1J4-000101 - 003470
         YZ 125 C SERIAL # 537-000101 - 014044
         YZ 125 X SERIAL # 1G8-000101 - 007120

the last number is the top serial number in the production run ( give or take the pre release testers )
so in theroy the rarer would be the 'B' model if you could call it that as that designation Run was only 1500 units long.

1977 everything in the range lined up again as the "d"

Hey, thread from the dead, er... let me see... thread from the hospice...

Update:
Frame is painted, swing arm, triple clamps and handle bars are fitted.

Still can't prise the DT175 barrel off the matching numbers X cases. Once it's off, I'll fit a C barrel for now, unless someone wants to sell me an X barrel (or swap for a C barrel).

Shock absorber is in bits, waiting for me to order the seals (thanks to Sean from SOS for the part numbers - highly recommended).

Seat cover arrived from the USA earlier this week.

Wheels are assembled but not yet tensioned/trued.

New tyres are here (2.75x21 and 3.50x18 - perfect for an old 125).

Most bits sourced, although many still need fettling.

Still looking for fork seals. I assume that they're a particular seal, given the relatively high pressures encountered in the air forks. Any help/leads on this will be greatly appreciated.

Anyhow, the real reason for this post is to say a big Thanks to Mark (Snowy 76), Scott (VMX Plastics) and Adam (YZ360A) - between the three of them, it's almost looking like it might be a low-cost project :o.
Hell, this thing might even make CD5 yet! (And if it doesn't, it won't be for lack of trying on my behalf!)

Does anyone know what sort of front hub an X should have? The early type with the little webs between the spokes on the non-brake side, of the later type without the webs?

Had a reasonably productive day.

Stripped the motor down, and it all looks quite good in there. Even after the years in the weather, it all came apart nicely* - something to do with not being subjected to ham-fisted morons with shifters and multi-grips, I guess.
The big end is OK, but not good enough to put back into a motor (although if it was in the bike and running, I'd leave it there). So one of my newly-acquired C motors has donated its crank and good rod.

It will go back together one night next week, after a lot of cleaning and a re-paint. The project 125C's motor will go together tomorrow as a warm-up.

Rear wheel is stilling in the swing arm so I can true it - will do it and the C's rear wheel tomorrow.

*This is a lie. Most of it came apart nicely, but one of the studs that hold the head and barrel onto the cases was rusted solid - took a LOT of work to get the barrel off... I didn't damage the cases, but the DT175 barrel is now strictly 'paddock bike only'...

The front hub for the X is the same as the C with the small webs on the opposite side to the brake. Keep us informed on how you a going.

Well, it's done a few laps of the backyard now.  :)

It fricken hammers - I was happy with how the C goes, but the X will blow it away.

Still has a few rough bits - crappy old plastics, wrong colour fuel tank, poorly bogged up fuel tank, etc, but with time this limited, I just don't care.

And the air forks need sorting - they're way too hard ATM.

The rebuilt shock is too soft though. Bit of head scratching as to how to sort that out, between now and Saturday morning (well, tomorrow morning really seeing as tomorrow will be spent travelling).  Pretty sure it doesn't have enough gas pressure as the local place ran out (he'd barely used his gas bottle for years until I learned he has it - I've gassed about a dozen shocks in the last six months).

Looks aren't everything!

I'm just taken a lunch break trying to sort sort out the last things on a YZ250 project! I see a midnight session upon me to be ready to be picked up at sparrows fart tomorrow.

Hope your bringing other bikes including the AT1!

You're alive Peter! Excellent news! Be good to catch up and give you a hard time for not making it to Clarence, between drinking beers. :)

The AT1 won't make it this time - I've 'borrowed' its bottom end for the CT1 race bike, so its leaning up against the side of the house, looking very unloved. :'(
Plan is to have it at CD6 in 'world beater' pre-70 trim...  :D/ ;D

Figured this could do with an update.

Dragged the X up to CD5, but it didn't make it to the track. A few things conspired against me: A much-too-low carby float level, a loose choke mech, leaky needle and seat, and a leaky fuel tap.
A few of these things were discovered at CD5, but not all of them....

So I regrouped, and got them all sorted, and then dragged it back up to CRC.

It is a great bike, despite a few (more) teething issues.
In practice, the clutch fell off.... Well, the nut that hold the clutch onto the input shaft of the gearbox fell off, then the clutch didn't work at all. Obviously a problem due to the rushed build.... :-[
http://i77.photobucket.com/albums/j41/Tento850/DSCF4525.jpg (photo thanks to Noel)
I wasted the rest of practice sorting that, and then in the first corner of the first race, I got a little bit excited trying to get around Bill C, and dropped it. It was a 'nothing' crash - didn't even stall it - but when I picked it up it was in neutral and the lever was jammed.

So after fart-arseing around with it, I removed the neutral detent mech. "Click", it popped into gear... Weird. So I fished out the ball-bearing and ran the rest of the weekend without neutral, and the gearbox was beautiful.

Not sure that the suspension is right, but I need to spend some time riding (rather than racing) to work out what is needed - plus going from short travel bikes to it, was always going to make the X feel good...
I think the rear spring is too soft for a start.

But DJRacing was right all those months ago when he told me that I was wrong for saying that I could live without an X. It has all of the C's good points (light, flickable, easy to ride etc), with more power and better suspension.

I love it.

The X is a cool bike with loads of power and once you get the forks set up and balanced with the rear shock it handles not to bad. Has yours got the big pipe on it or is it a "C" pipe?

And, many months after the fact, here's the "Before" photos, thanks to Snowy76...

Update on the bike is that I won my first ever race on it, at the second Canberra HEAVEN round - although the full story is that Noel and Jens were clearing off into the distance with me a distant third, when Jens' bike locked up and took both him and Noel out.
In the second race of that meeting, I had one of the best races of my life, chasing Noel down after I had a (typical) lousy start - got second by about half a wheel length.

Then up at Buladelah, I was easily winning practice on it, when I got into a tank slapper and bit it hard. Bike came out undamaged, but I ended up with a broken fibula.

Back next year!

Nathan Nathan Nathan I warned you the X had power  ;)  ;D but I didnt think you would be doing tank slappers and breaking bones. Sorry to hear that mate. I hope you get well soon so you can give Noel and the boys some more curry.
How about posting up some race photos if you have any and with the time off work whats the bike you plan to build next?

Oh, I did it back in Sept.... Just didn't make a fuss about it, 'cause there didn't seem to be much point.
Only a slight hobble now, getting better by the day.

Next? Ah... I dunno - sorting out the DT1 racer is the most obvious thing to do, and then probably the KDX200B.
Or maybe some digit extraction and actually do something about this new rally car....
