I want to remove the wiring harness on my mighty '84 TSX250 and replace it with the bare minimum ala RM style. The bike has a solenoid type exhaust valve and corresponding control unit. If I remove the wiring I am guessing I will still need to hook in the regulator to control the current to these units ??? yes / no / I don't give a rats..bloody modern crap! :P ;D

Without looking at the manual, i would say yes, the control unit requires 12volt DC to run. The TS stator is 12v 3 phase, fed into a regulator rectifier that changes the AC from the stator into DC to charge the battery. The exhaust control unit is then powered from the 12v DC from battery. You could probably get away with no battery and just use a large capacitor. Well thats what i reckon anyway, but i might be wrong because dont the RM's have this valve too and they dont have a battery, so maybe they run by AC?
Anyway do you have a wiring diagram there? I do so i will have a look at it now. :)

mmm..that's kind of what I'd reckon too Leith. The RM's didn't get exhaust valves till '86 and they were of the mechanical type not solenoid like the TS :-\

Ahh that pretty much answers it then, if RM were mechanical. Just been looking at the wirig diagram now and it sure looks like its running off DC to me. Theres a solenoid valve and Ex valve control unit. Its connected up to the same wiring as what goes to horn, brake light, blinkers etc so would be DC.
If you dont want to use a battery i reckon one of these would work. I believe Lozza can supply you one similar?

phark ::) the stock wiring harness isn't looking like a bad option is it :D the bike runs fine with a totally rooted battery and also with no battery so I wasn't even thinking of that :-\ the thot plickens ::) simply leaving well and good enough alone sounds much easier so I think I'll stick with that ;D I am chasing a decent wiring loom if anyone has one..looks like many sexy fingers have fondled mine over the years prior ::)

Yeah ignition is AC like the old PE's/TS but battery or DC is required for ex valve, blinkers, horn other things. Ask Mick or Frosty on EBTas they have stacks of TSX stuff.

I think you'll find that is a servo, opening and closing a exhaust sub chamber. Disconnect it and you throw away shitloads of bottom end power. Thanks for that link Leith , my battery elims are about the same price.

We are using a lot of cordless drill 14.4v batteries now, for $40 you get 2 batteries and a 240v charger. The drill batteries are very light also.

yeah Loz you might be right about the chamber as opposed to a 'real' exhaust valve, I've never had the thing apart to see what critters lurk in there :-\
the rechargeables (sounds like a good name for a movie) are a good bit of lateral thinking..that's probably the path I'll go as a regular sized battery is rather large, heavy and I don't like it at all. Only has to run that solenoid so it shouldn't drain too fast one would think :-\ or would one?? ??? I guess it's a case of try it and see :-\

That chamber is fairly typical of the era RG 125/250/400/500 all had them. They only move from open to closed at a set rpm, not constantly move like a servo.Very good system well worth keeping. I am currently planning a bolt on version of them.
