Title: KX500/250 or KDX250 motor
Post by: Nathan S on September 22, 2010, 07:01:07 pm
I've got an early 90s KX500 roller.
I'm seriously thinking of fitting a small 4-stroke motor to it, but before I take to the frame with the angle grinder, I figured it would be worth trying to get a suitable Kawi motor for it.

Would even seriously consider an early water cooled KDX200 motor, but would really prefer a 250 or 500.

If you've got something that you think might be useful, then gimme a yell and we'll see what we can work out.

Cheers,
Nathan.

Few of these rollers, along with CR500's kicking around at the moment, a result of people having a desperate need to build a 500cc alloy framed "AF" bike.
Have passed up on two of these rollers in the last couple of months at crazy low prices.

Yeah, tell me about it - KX500 motors on US ebay are silly money.

This I why I'm happy to look at 250s.

Put the angle grinder down , step away from the grinder , hands behind your head, lay face down........................

Well find me a real motor for the bloody thing, then.

Centre exhaust port, entry for the carb offset to the left.
The spare air cooled KDX200 motor and the IT250J motor that are here, both have side exhaust ports - I'm willing to deal with engine mounts, but I'm not going to hack into structural bits of the frame (like the downtubes).

In contrast, an XL185 motor needs the original bottom mounts removed from the frame and some adaptor brackets made up.

an XL185 donk in a KX500 chassis ???
the other way round might make a good flat tracker but this way round is...
well...
um?....
will you be putting a basket on the handlebars?
Title: Re: KX500/250 or KDX250 motor

Hadn't thought of the basket, but its already got the streamers out of the handgrips.

Way I'm figuring it, the bikes owes me SFA - if I had a strong desire to own a KX500 then I'd have bought one a few years back when they were selling for not-ridiculous money.

If I can't get a suitable Kawa 2T motor for it, then fitting a $500 Chinese XL185 style motor:
1. Turns a dead bike into a rideable one, rather than have it sit around doing nothing.
2. Makes for a better, faster XR250 style of bike.
3. Is no loss, as a pre-95 bike is historically irrelevant anyhow.

What about a BSA motor ::), seen it done to a Maico once.
Or a Triumph motor ::)
or....

I couldn't think of anything more useless to ride around.

Didn't I tell you the other week Nathan, Focus, Focus,

Magnifying glass effect, find a goal and create tunnel vision for it.

Your running off on too many tangents.

A couple more kids should see you right

If you can't find a KDX200 engine, you aren't trying too hard. There must be a million of them out there…

then hand it onto Lozza…

point no 1 the difference is? will again be a dead bike sitting around doing nothing ;D

The other alternative is to sell it to me so I can squeeze my mid 80'S KX500 engine to it. It might just fit without much work ;D
I could do with a pre 95 bike.

Actually, I've just been down that path, and they are MUCH harder to find than you'd think, particularly if you want a post-1995 one. Finding one with a live barrel has still been beyond my skills.

Anyhow, you can all bitch, or you can find me a motor. :)

I've got a two year old who has worked out that using the word "pweeze" with just the right tone will get him almost anything.
Dunno why it wouldn't work for me too?!

There the sort of motors you put into 125 frames, not 500 frames.

This wouldn't be too bad if your up for a rebuild

That is crazy I can barely stay on my brothers 96 kx80 with the stock motor the wheel base is way to short to put a bigger motor in it.

It just dawned on me that Nathan probably thought I was taking the piss with my offer to buy his roller considering our different opinions on the pre 95 thing. I'm serious however. I have a bit of a love of KX500s and have a motor looking for a home. Interested in a deal Nathan?

I'd prefer to go the other way, to be honest.

My bike is a bit of a bitsa - KDX triples, Honda RWU forks and front wheel and RMX250 rear wheel - Its one of those things where its market value is way below its value to me.

Buy this;

Throw a Pro-Circuit pipe and muffler at the new combination, re-advertise the quad for a couple of hunge and you got yourself a cheap KX500
