Title: XL185/XR200 engine parts interchange with Chinese stuff?
Post by: Nathan S on September 22, 2010, 12:31:06 pm
So I know that there's a ton of Chinese engines based on the old SL100~CRF230 donk.

My question is, how much stuff is actually interchangable?

The immediate question is whether I could either fit a Chinese top end to a set of XL185 cases, or at least whether it would be possible to fit Honda clutch and igniion covers to a Chinese engine.

Buy the gaskets first, if they line up then there is a fair chance the parts will too  ;)

My option was to put the whole damn motor in. I can get a 250 Lonsin for under $500 and bolt it into an Xr250 roller I have. The XR needs a full overhaul and the bits would cost more than that alone.
Plus I can have elec start et al.....

Exactly what I was thinking - I've got a seized XL185 motor here (thanks Roger!) but I'd like to keep it looking as much like a Honda motor as possible.

(Not gonna be a race bike either, BTW).

In my experience some of the XR200 copies are almost identical and will interchange but most are different enough that they won't. (talking about top end parts only not whole engines). Some have weird barrel heights that don't line up with Honda stuff and you end up chasing your tail
There are even a couple out there that look like XR200 copies but on closer inspection are pushrod ???
I've built a lot of genuine XR/XL motors recently for guys in Vic and they are quite cheap to build, If the crank and gearbox are OK I would rebuild it. You should be able to do a seized top end for under $250...and thats with good quality parts wiseco etc. You could do it even cheaper with generic parts

Just remembered a bit more...

It was the "Jincheng" XR engines that were closest to Honda. I actually did a swap of Honda sidecovers on to one of these.
I'm reasonably sure all the Loncin, Lifan, Ducar Etc have a different oil pump / filter set up and you can't interchange the covers with an XR/XL.

My sons XR200 has had the top end done just before xmas and probably done only 5-10 hrs and needs doing again. The problem is it's too much fun to ride and gets flogged like an XR75 back in the day.
It has cost me about 400 each time to get the cams and followers done the first time and piston and ring set with all the odds and sods the second.
The XR250 has a stretched little end and was sunk in a creek for 2 days so I'm too scared to even pull the crank out. :D

the jianshe stuff will swap in the 125 i think the 150/200 stuff will swap but the quailty is not as good as the honda stuff i have heard that cranks can be out etc. the road race blokes use them in the bucket classes.google team mad dog forum it`s a site related to bucket racing etc it may help.
