With the twin shock/ linkage debate, i thought i'd ask who is riding what (era not specific brand) and how old you are(tell the truth now)just to see how many venture to older bikes other than their 'era' just to see if the majority are sticking to the bikes that they rode in their youth.... or not. Also how often, like regularly or dust it off for a title meet.

good idea!

31 years old, and I have bikes made from 69 to 99. I first rode in 1984, and started paying proper attention to bikes in 85~86.
If I could find a pre-65 bike that was two stroke, had a LHS gear lever, was remotely competitive, and I could afford, then I'd be all over it. But seeing as I don't think such a beast exists, I guess pre-70 is as far back as my participation goes.
If I was really pushed to cut back my fleet, the bikes that would stay are 74, 77, 80, 87, and 94 models.
Edit (for my own clarity, and because all the other kids are doing it):

Good shit Brad ;D
I'm 44, never rode MX as a young fella.
I started VMX witha 1978 YZ125E, but wanted a 1980 YZ125G
The next bike I raced was a 1982 YZ125J, still looking for the 125G
Found a YZ125G but raced the old YZ125E again.
Bought a new 2006 YZF250 for racing modern natural terrian.
The next bike I raced and still am racing is a 1976 YZ125X.
The YZ125X I take to the modern natural terrian races with my 06 YZF250 and find myself racing the older bike more often than the new one.
I am going to race a 1975 YZ125B next when it is finished.
Have a 1985 YZ125N but it is in bits. I do intend to race it one day.
If I had to sell a bike the first to go would be the modern thing, but please dont ask me to sell anything else. ;D

*A question! Why do you act like a pork chop on this forum all of the time 414? It's getting a tad tedious.

47 this year
Started racing in about 73 on a z5o at wallan then went to a RM80B and raced at Nunawading.
Gt out of it for a few years then got a CR125RB then an CR125RC then just stopped for some silly reason.
Macca taked me into doing up RB and racing again.
1981 CR125 fully restored 06. This was my original bike purchased in 81 and still have the sales docket.
Raced VIPER in pre85 125/250 in 07. First time back on a bike for 25 odd years.
Cant wait till CD5 and the start of a new race season.

a big old 42 years young,
dig the older bikes mostly due to hearing my older brothers mates argue it out when i was a young fella.
and all those yamaha sales brochures i had. boxes of em! memorised it as a kid,
it's how i learnt to read, sadly they all went up in a house fire years ago...sniff...
bikes 74mx125 is the main bike-racing
pre-70rt1-now racing
on the bench is more pre75 stuff, 1 pre 78 and 1 evo
modern mount is a 2000 cr250 and it's soon up for sale as i'm losing interest,
work truck is 93 xt600, she's cool with the button and big tank.
no dogs or cats, just 2 kids and a passion for pre75
so i guess to answer the question,
my bikes are mostly "before" my time.

45Yrs now and mostly a Suzuki fan.XR 75(74),YZ80C,SL,KD90,RM125 and so on to now in the shed where my RM250T(1980),RM250B(1977),RM125D(1983) an 84 125E Zook in progress and a KTM EXC-F250(2007)-my first Euro bike and a sweet thing it is, take up the room-one car sleeps outside-I am working on the other side.Still love it like I was 10yrs old and hope to be involved one way or another when throwing a leg over gets harder to do-An SP370 almost turned me off the sport for life!
-
Shit, am I the only bloke with just one bike?? :-[
It's a '78 Maico 440 - and to be honest it still hasn't arrived!
I'm 47 years old and this machine is from the era I raced Motocross ('78 & '79 seasons).
So to answer Brads question, yes I've gone with what I know and the era I relate to.
I wouldn't have gone earlier than a '70 model as they're mostly four strokes - and although I love ém, I don't have any experience with the motors.
-
G'day viewers I'm a 1966 model so that would make me 41 I think? I have a DT1 for pre 70 also a ME 125 Indian for pre 75 and a TS185 bitsa bike for pre 75 I've never race a bike or rode in a pack I hope to change both of these things in 08. ;D jimson
-
49 in April. Never raced MX until 2000 when I got into VMX. Rode in the 70s and 80s, mostly trail and enduro and some dirt track. Big crash in 88 slowed me down and I got into roadies in a big way, then off bikes altogether from about 90 through to 98.
Identify mostly with bikes from my 'era', that is 1975 to 1985, although if pressed really prefer my bike to have twin shocks. Linkage bikes are fine, but too much like a modern bike for me.
Vintage: 74 TM125, 75 RM125.
Modern: 05 YZ125.
I get to ride occasionally I guess, I think about a dozen times in 2007, including a few race days. Hope to do a bit more this year though.
-
Seems most here are in their 40's & 50's
I'm 48
Trying to piece together a HL 500, CMS/ CZ 400
& rebuild a 73 Maico 250 & 89 Beta trials.
Bought a 2000 - KTM 300 a few years back because I wanted a trail / club MX bike that ran while I found time to work on the others. Time for my own projects seems to come second to working on everyone else's projects :'( unfortunatly it had a few problems that kept robbing me of both time & money.
Thinking of selling it to finance the completion of the others & a newly aquired 88 KDX 200 may become my vinduro / pre 90 & modern trail bike
-
45 y/o, fat, bald and hell slow! Started racing at 37y/o. Rode Maico last season, ('75 MC250/326 & '76 AW440) but will probably be on Husqvarna for the coming season, ('74 WR400 & whatever else I can get for pre'78 /EVO). My modern bike is another piece of Swedish excellence and in my opinion, the only make to have: 2007 Husaberg FE550, (been riding Husaberg since 2002 after switching from Husqvarna).
Cheers,
K

G'day All i'm 43 i started racing in late 78 on a YZ80E i loved that bike and thought i was king dick every time i hopped on it ,Now 30 years later i have a YZ400E and now every time i hop on it my knees hurts but once i fire it up and let the clutch out i get a buzz thats hard to describe and thats the only reason i ride .if i didnt get that i wouldnt bother jumping through all the hoops it takes to get on the track. I would like a pre 75 bike for racing but i'm not passionate about them because i never raced one .To me the bikes i rode growing up have more meaning .I plan on racing Viper Pre80 & Pre85 this season and a few flattrack meetings & CD5
YZ400E - Pre 80
IT465H - Evo
YZ250J - Pre 85
YZ125K - Pre 85
-
46.5 with some busted body parts but I still sort of resemble a human...
I started on Yamahas with vertical twin shocks 4' travel but progressed as I got older into racing enduros on an IT175 then sold it and raced a 490 alpha1 maico in the mid 80's for about 3 years.
now i got my beloved YZ465 and an 83' KTM495 due for resto . So yes my bikes are from the era I raced in, and I only found out about VMX a year ago, thats when I realised there was a God...
-
Sorry to say I am 37 years old and got into VMX after too many beers with Firko and Bernie at the Broadford OZ GP many years ago.
Currently own the following mighty Suzuki's
1981 RM 125X
1982 RM 250Z
1983 RM 250D
1984 RM 125E
I used to own a red devil but it just wasn't an era that I followed (too young) the early to mid eighties are where my interest grew.
VMX to me is about having fun, reliving our youth and hanging out with some quality people.
-
Yeah that was a good weekend Suzuki43. I was seeing double that day (in joke). Don't forget to drop by the Kevlar Pavillion at CD5 for a quiet Margarita.
-
Shit I am 49 in 2 weeks time, started riding at 11yrs old with a deckson, then rode, crashed and raced an XR75 at black meetings around NSW in the early 70's, late 70's early 80's did Enduro's/Flat track and MX on PE175, YZ250H(BETRIC RACING) and IT250L, late 80's and 90's were Enduro's both Club and State rounds on RMX250, XR400, and WR400F, started with VMX 2001 with Cooper Enduro, I like mostly 70's dirt bikes and minicycles, I have in the shed a couple of Cooper MX bikes, YAMAHA MX360, MX250B, YZ125X, YZ80B, CR80 RED DEVILS, FIVE XR75's, RM250D, motorsport XL250 plus other bikes, still have a WRF400 for trail riding.

Yamaboy age 57.
I started racing at the Amaroo Park in 1973 on a horrible little AT1 Yamaha. I quickly moved to a TM125 and than a CR250m Honda. A quick flirt with a 400 Maico and then I got the best bike I ever owned, a Yamaha 400 B. I raced that bike for three years, way past its use by date and it never let me down. I retired in '78 to enter the business world and didn't sit on a dirt bike until I ran into Firko at the rugby in '88 and he told me all about this vintage thing he was trying to set up. I managed to buy back my old 400B but found out it was too new so I got an MX360A FOR $100. I rode at the first meeting at Amaroo Park in 1988 and rarely missed a meeting until the last Condo in '99. I now find motocross a little too much for my old footy and MX ravaged body and limit my rides to Classic Dirt or the occasional dirt track.
Oldest race bike..1967 BSA B44 and 1962(?) Francis Barnett trials bike
Favourite race bike..1974 Yamaha YZ250A
Newest race bike..1981 Yamaha YZ465 H (recently sold when I realised that it wasn't my bag) so I guess it's my trusty 400b
projects..Mead framed B44 GP pre 65 bike, '74 TY175, Maico 250 square barrell basket case, DT1 Yamaha, Triumph 650 Bonny desert sled, 1968 Mustang Bullit replica.

50+ ............ Do not compete , love too build tinker and play about, spectate and bullshit to like minded people. Most of my treasured bikes with a sad feeling have been sold on. Still they may be back on the track !!! :) Hmm Honda754 (OK sometimes 736cc or 788cc or 802cc mostly 836/840cc but can be 1012..) Homebuilt /Wasp mixture VMX Pre75 Sidecar , Honda 754 pre75 classic speedway sidecar. , Kawasaki W1 650cc pre68 VMX Sidecar, SL Hondas 70, 100, 125 Solos. Yamaha Champion 750cc Flattracker.
Oh the really ugly old Kawasaki needs a new owner that will get her back on the pre68 track .

Old Phil aged 58.
I started racing dirt track in 1970 or so at the old Londonderry track on a 350 BSA slider my older brothers mate owned. It was a piece of shit but I was hooked. I soon bought a Bultaco MK3 boat tail and started doing a bit of club day MX at Amaroo as well as racing dirt track all over. I moved to Maicos in 1974 with an LTR 400 and then in 1976 and AW 440. I went road racing in 78 and didn't return to racing on the dirt until I discovered vintage in 89. Still throw a leg over three or four times a year but enjoy the cameraderie much more these days. It taked a week to recover at my age.
My Oldest race bike would have to be my 1968 GYT DT1.
Newest vintage bike 1977 AW250 Maico or the 1985 CR500 Honda I'm too old to use in MX but it's cool DT bike.
Modern.. bike My Xmas pressy to myself 05 Husky 570
favorite track-Amaroo Dirt Track, what a ripper that track was.
Projects- 1965 Triumph 650 Metisse, Yamaha TD1B, Suzuki TM 400, Kawasaki KX 420, small block SVO Ford powered Sunbeam Alpine Tiger replica.
Looking forward to having a Margarita in Kamp Kevlar at CD5 and flying to Tassie to watch the Nats in June. The latest debates on the future of VMX have been terrific. It's good to see passion.
-
Jeez am I glad Firko and a few others got in before me. Age 55 good years young although it just looks like I"ve had a hard life. Started racing at 16 with St. George club on a 90cc Honcho which we promtley kitted with the 100cc race kit(went twice as fast and still came last) Been racing in one form or other ever since. Current race bike 125cc Sickman --Suzuki 1973. RMS 125cc --1976. Hopefully this year get to finish Ossa Pioneer 250cc --1972 and race it. May if insanity prevails get to monkey on a pre 1975 sidecar with 500cc honda with good buddy Russell this year also. Rode 8 club events 2 Aussie titles and 4 other away events last year but will probably cut back somewhat this year.
-
well here goes....im 34 years old been into interested in the vintage scene the last 4 years...had a variety of different brand bikes over the last 20 years or so..honda z50 xr250 99,suzuki rmx250 97 rm250 82, ts400 76, yamaha yz250 89 yz490 83 tt250 86, tt600 84,kx125 92, rm125 95(which appeared in adb nov 97 issue cause i won a total makeover competion...new plastics etc etc),current bikes are yz250h 81 first ever resto and last...and honda cr500 84 and pw50 my young fella rides.....over the years (before i got hitched and had kids) i raced pony express and the adb thumper nats which was the best races ever...sort of the same thing with the vintage movement(laidback and no pressure racing).... thats whats so attractive about it.... 8)
-
Brent, ex kiwi (but really will always be a bloody kiwi eh?)
48 next month. Got re-interested in old bikes when I saw the first issue of VMX.
I sort of raced a TM125 in the mid 70's but mostly trail rode up till I left NZ in 88 for the last time.
We have no vintage racing in Darwin so I race my XT in C grade at natural terrain meets against the moderns, I don't get anywhere but I have more fun now than I ever did in the past.
I like to get away down south every year or so to a proper two day vintage meet if I can.
Currently I have a Suzuki TM125 to rebuild for pre 75 and a fleet of XT500 Yam's. Funny thing is I never owned an XT/TT before 2000.
Currently I have a pre 78 500, finishing a pre 80 500, building an XT based vinduro bike, a 95% complete unmolseted 80 (G) and a 80% basket case 76 (C) model. I currently poses enough spares to last my lifetime and then some.
Other bikes are a Honda CRF230 for my wife and an XR200 powered KTM for my trail bike.
The realities of trying to build and run so many bikes is sinking in so the XT/TT fleet could be culled somewhat in the future, probably to be replaced by something else.
I've still got a hankering for a Suzuki TS90MX, my first ever motorbike!
Brent

I am 45 years old . I have a '74.5 Maico 250 & 400 for pre '75 racing . '77 Husqvarna CR250, 390 & an Auto for pre '78 racing . Evo bikes include '81 Maico 250 & 490 , as well as '84 Husqvarna 250 ,CR500 ,500 Auto & 510 fourstroke . Sometimes it is hard to choose which evo bike to race , but it usually comes down to which one is not pulled apart at the time . My most modern bike is a '98 Husaberg 600, but I like oddball bikes like my ATK605. My only road bike is a Ducati S2 Mille , which is the last of the bevels. I am thinking of selling the pre '75 bikes as there is no class for them where I live & it is a bit hard to justify owning bikes that I would only ride once or twice a year when I travelled to title meetings .
-
Rossco - 46.5 and from the sounds of things I must be BigK's brother ;D ;D. Started racing with a 78 CR250 (have restored one) and finished with an 82 RM250Z (got one of them to) so I probably classify myself as now riding the era I did ride. However have fallen in love with pre 75 because thats what everybody rides here in the west and cant believe how much fun my 73 CR 250 is and dying to get my Yz360 out (hasn't spoken in anger yet!).
Top thread - I am not alone in my Old Farts status!!!!!!!!!!!!

well shit! I totally missed the jump on this thread..typical ::)
anyway, 44y/o been riding since 7. First bike Suzuki MT50, it was affectionately known to me 'The Blapper'. I've owned many bikes including some roadies but nothing overly flash or terribly exciting..my toys are pretty much all orphaned models few seem to bother with. These include '65 Hillbilly, '69 TS250, '71 TS/TM125, '73 F11 kawa, '74 TM125, '74 RL250, '76/'77 RM125, '76 TS400 '77 RM80, '78 RM400, '78 JR50, '81 KLX, '82 RM80 and the '82 DR500SZ my prodical son. Projects underway, pre '78 RMS/TM125, '74 TS/TM250. I only ride a few times a year and rarely competitively. Raced once when I was 14 and one dirt track attempt at about 30ish but I'm more so a Joe Average trail rider who loves nothing better than a long ride with a few mates. First vmx race at Coff's in May '07 and it rates right up there as a major highlight of my otherwise mundane life :) First time I'd ridden a TM125 in over 25 years also and it was so much FUN I'm now hooked on the little screamers! Looking forward to getying in a bit more riding this year than I have in previous years be it VMX or just trail riding so long as the body remains willing ;)
-
I'm 44 yrs vintage, still got the rotten remains of my first bike - 1966 CZ175, at the time I dreamed of tearing up the farm on a CZ400 which I finally did at age 39.
If you are into CZ's there's a very strong chance you will be locked forever in the "golden era" of pre-75.
I have been actively competing here in NZ for 5 years now, a five round champs series (how sad it has never made it to the pages of VMX mag) and a few extra meetings here & there thru the year. 2005 would be my most active year, I did just about anything that was going that year. These days I'm pruning back some of the meetings I would otherwise attend, a little more laid-back lifestyle sort of thing....Dang it...it's this stinkin 'lectric guitar & a JD bottle has taken over me. I shall return with the "Moto blues band".
Hey interesting looking at the ages, bet you could fill a start gate with 1963 ;)

I'm 44 and one of the poor cousins with only one vintage bike (well Evo actually) .
First bike was a CT90, in fact it was a bunch of CT90s. We used to go to the government auctions and buy ute loads of broken postie bikes then build up running ones out of all the parts.
Next was a Kawasaki KV100 which was a great little bike on the farm.
Here's a shot of a forum member at Rockley circa 1980, just after being caught out by the savage power band on the KV100.
First full sized bike was an IT175 which was followed by a succession of KDXs and YZs. Had a long break from bikes then got back into VMX in 2002 and have only had Evo bikes since. Current bike is a 1981 Maico 250.
Currently 2 moderns in the shed, a 2000 TM125 Enduro (anyone want to buy it) and a 2008 KTM 200 (fun fun fun).

Ribbo, looks like i am not the only one who has sampled the dust at Rockley. At least mine hasnt been splashed all over forum.

47, raced from 1974 at Granville mini bike club (now Parramatta City Raceway) on my XR75 and then from 1976 on a CR125M with the Merrylands club. Next 10 years spent racing all over the country mainly on CR's, with a couple of YZ's and an RM mixed in there. 1985 broke my knee and that was it for 10 years or so. 1996 I got an old XR250, then a XR600 and then a new KTM620SC. In 2000 I scored a reasonable CR250RZ which to this day is my favourite bike of all time. Now I've got an XR75K1, CR250M, CR125RZ, CR250RZ, ME360 Mugen, CR450RB, CR250RD x 2, CR480RD, CR125RK and a CR250RK. Seems to be a bit of red there.

Crabman age 43, started riding at age 10 Suzuki ts 50, still regularly race MX, enduro's and observed trials, VMX and Adventure riding. My passion for bikes is described by my wife as a sickness. I have had to rent a workshop to keep all the bikes. My other fast growing hobby is to collect manuals - collection growing fast. My absolute favourite is riding with my twelve year old son -hence the high number of junior MX bikes. Generally buy a bike with no intention of selling it. Will probab;ly take the RMZ 450 to my grave -best bike ever . I regularly travel large distances across the country to ride with another buddy who is an obsessive compulsive restorer. I just want to ride everything and anything. Ride at least twice a week in summer in South Africa ( home of all things nice including the Rugby World Cup )
Currently have approximately 39 bikes ranging from
Suzuki RMZ 450 (2005)

Husky61 (Shoey)
46 years of age caught the VMX bug in 2004 , but my main interest is Mountaineering. I started riding with my brother in 1970. We mostly owned (or were supplied by dad) Husqvarnas. i have pretty well had a bike or two in the shed since 1970 and Im happy to say they have nearly always been husqvarnas.
I am very fortunate to have the following bikes.
72 Cr 450 (husky) Nicest looking bike in the group
CR 250 Mag (Husky) (Nice bike)
76 360 Mikola (Husky) (Nice bike)
76 360 WR (In pieces awaiting resto)
79 250 CR Husky (Nice bike)
79 390 CR Husky Auto (Exceptionally Nice bike to ride)
81 420 WR Husky Auto (Nice bike)
83 250 Husky CR ( In my opinion the 83 models are sensational looking bikes)
83 250 Husky XC
83 500 Husky CR (2 off) One bike (Fully restored) is for sale. Contact Fernando at Husky Parts
83 500 Husky XC
79 440 Maico (Beautiful bike) This bike is for sale. Contact Les at Mainly Maico
81 490 Maico
79 250 CR Honda
83 450 CR Honda
HL 500 Yamaha
Many other things stored away including some moderns
Alot of the above bikes i have restored myself and quite a number of bikes were purchased from close friends and riders i have met though VMX. To date VMX has been a very rewarding experience and i have met many many fine people and gained some very good friends. There are many meetings to look forward to in the year 2008 and I look forward to 2008 with great anticipation.
Happy newyear and i hope to catch up with alot of the VMX folk though out 2008.

Time to be honest.
45 years of age.
Bikes:
1979 YZ250F I got the bug and needed a VMX bike and this came along first.
1982 YZ125J X2. 1 going one in bits. Had one of these new in 82. oved it then. Loved it now.
1983 RM250D. Wanted a 250cc pre 85 bike and this came along
1982 YZ100. Bought it for $50. the guy who phoned said it was a 125. When I got there. he said it was a 100 bored out to a 125. More like bored out to a 101. Fixed it up for the daughter to ride. She won;t ride it, so I got to sell it. Many pink parts. Have to sell it now.
1983 IT490 Wanted a similar era open classer and this came along. Going but needs a fair bit of work.
1983 YZ125K Had to be nicer than the J didn't it. Bought it and started collecting parts for a rebuild. Have to sell it now.
1980 IT175G/H Had one of these back in the day. A mate had this one and did not want it. Started collecting bits for it but now have to sell it.
Also have a 1998 WR250 2t and a 04 YZ125 for the son and a 00 DS 80 for the other daughter which go to my talley as well.
8 bikes in total going. 3 not going, but all there. 3 modern bikes.

So that's your YZ 100 with all the pink bits on it! Looked tidy apart from the pink. Sorry. :-\
-
i'm a 71 kid and even though dad raced road bikes i never got a bike until i left school and could afford one for myself.
i've transferred myself from being a single track trail rider to pretty much exclusively riding motocross tracks now so my modern is a 2007 RMZ450 K7.
for old ride bikes .....
i've got a 1980 YZ465 G-banger, because bikes from this this era were cheap and plentiful so were the first bikes for many of my mates when we first left school in the late 80's.
i'm also just finishing off a 1986 CR250 RG, because this was the dream modern bike for myself and most of my mates when we were buying our first bikes.
i fully appreciate and admire the 70's and even 60's era bikes (especially those uber cool trumpies and beezas) but just don't have the same attachment to them that guys of my era have to 80's jap bikes
-
46/120kg lucky i am tall so can carry/hide weight and the bald spot ;D
wasp 1976 gs1000
suzuki gs1000 dirt track side car
husky wr 430 1983 thought i would use one of the bikes i imported -should at least race one of them at least till it sells

To rehash/update my original post:
34 years old, and I have bikes made from '70 to '00. I first rode in 1984, and started paying proper attention to bikes in 85~86.
If I was really pushed to cut back my fleet, the bikes that would stay are 74, 76, 77, 80, 87, and 94 models.
Pink means that its a bike that I had/a mate had when I wasa kid.
Red means that I lusted after it when I was a kid.
Funnily enough, there are a few bikes on the list that I'm very passionate about, but are neither red or pink.

I'm a fraction younger than the era of bikes that I mainly ride now. What I mean is I was racing mini's in 79-82 but really wanted to get into the big stuff (I was 14 in 1979). I did however get Stan S's VE 414 in 1982 but just wasn't savvy enough to race it. My tally today stands at:
VR 250 ('74). Not really my era but a pretty little thing.
VE 414 ('79).
VF 414 ('80).
VF 414 ('80).
YZ 465 H ('81). Make me an offer
YZ 80 J ('82). Yeah it's not going but it will.
H7 250 ('83). Too pretty to ride as well.
YZ 250 M ('00). Yeehaa!.....

Twenty years ago this list would have consisted of a dozen or so Maicos plus my Champion framed Yamaha SC500 flat tracker and whatever modern bike I had at the time. Fifteen years ago it would have shown my renewed interest in early Yamaha's by including the 'DT1 from Hell' and my emerging interest in special framed bikes with my Champion framed XL350 motocrosser.
Ten years ago the Maico hoard was dramatically thinned, the Champion XL sold and a renewed interest in classic cars took precedence in the shed.
Today the list reflects my non racing status by consisting of bikes that appeal to my love of custom frames and for the sadly forgotten (and quirky) bikes of our sports history. Seeing that Nathan's used up the red and pink ink, my under construction bikes are in blue, the 'waiting for their moment' bikes are in green and the bikes that don't currently figure in future plans are in brown.

I also have an interest in Jaguars, owning

Since the POM's put his up there I may as well put mine up there!
I'm a 1961 model myself
Most of my life I have spent doing enduros and hare scrambles in the Vic series but now since I have changed over to motocross and found it much easier on the body than spending a whole day floggin round the bush for hours on end. These three lap motos are like a holiday compared to a non-stop three hour hare scramble... The body ain't what it used to be.
