Title: What Junior Club did you start motocross?
Post by: mudguard on August 25, 2010, 08:52:04 pm
What junior club did you start motocross racing and what year?  What city / Town was it in?  Is the club still going? What was your ride at the club?  Did you compete with other local clubs at their tracks?  We may find other members on this site that were members of the same junior club.

I started junior motocross in 1979 at Lake Macquarie Motorcycle club. It was located near Toronto on the western side of Lake Macquarie, Newcastle area. Dont know if the club is still going. My first ride was a YZ80E. Competition with other local clubs was with Cessnock, Raymond Terrace and Hunter Mini Mates at Maitland. Still remember the track layout from our club, and reminds me of a smaller version of Stanmore, Qld.

probably 86? at the Narangba track beside the freeway. Only rode for a year or so before i gave it away ::) another promising career cut short ;D

Puttered around in the bush and used the recently vacated track for the MX club behind the PGH brickworks at Brendale before that.

GVJMCC ,WAAIA circuit, started racing in 1983 on a kx80f1,then onto 125,s.Cool loamy track, the club is still going, but at a new track, the landowners claimed the land back after over 20 yrs! I,m saving my pennies to buy the track back off em & build my own vmx nirvana.

Found the local track in '79 at the age of 12. Stanmore mx track which is still there but sadly will be gone very soon. Typically, people move into the area then start to complain about the noise.

which is what happened to the track at Narangba despite the fact it was right beside the Bruce Highway ::)

John, did you ever ride at the old Caboolture speedway? it did have a motocross track (around and through it) but was not so good.

Another good track from the 70's was the Kilcoy track on the western side of Kilcoy (not the one now) it was a textbook natural terrian track and the first track I rode as a Junior on 125's in 78.

Love them old shots with the tracks and half buried tyres (specially painted White).

As a kid was always great to turn up at a track that was like this.

Hey Mudguard, I also started racing at Lake Macquarie in 1980. Some fast guys came from the club in that period like Kevin Curtain and Todd Wiltshire. The track's still there but it's not a junior club anymore. The track is totally different to what it once was as well, except for the berm before the main tabletop. The main tabletop appeared in about '81 I think and started life as a set of doubles. The bottom part of the current track used to be a separate short circuit track. It was just recently used for a Heaven round and has been used to host rounds for the Australian Motocross Championship. Does anyone remember when the Leyland Brothers did a story about junior motocross at the track in the mid 70's?

Castlemaine and district minibike club, didnt actually get to race until early 1980, and also Bendigo minibike club. Castlemaine track still in existence, but a different layout. Some of the local Gun riders of the times were Peter Honebone and Simon Broad, the late Trevor Day, and several quick guys from Melbourne, Ricky Murphy, Troy Dorron(!), Glen McDonald, Glen Kambouris etc

Hey Rodpack,
Thats what were looking for, vmx forum members from the same junior club. Wonder how many of us are out there?
Wiltshire, Curtin and another A-Grade rider Steve ? dont remember his last name, but were always the standout riders at junior level. I remember Steve rode a YZ80 and had a very modified XR80 that would smoke most of the 2 stroke 80cc, was entertaining to watch 8) They were above my grade. I think Wiltshire went on to ride speedway solo's.

Todd Wiltshire did indeed go on to ride speedway solo and was/is an exceptional international speedway rider. he had a bad accident and did some back damage and gave it away for a few years only to come back later to the same form. a great rider to watch and a very fast starter.

I started racing a Gemini 50 back in 1974 at the Diamond Valley mini motorcycle club in Greensborough. I then bought a YZ 80C in 1976 and rode it there until the council took the land of the club and did nothing with it. I now live a few streets away from where that track was.  When the track closed I moved over and raced at the Whittlesea and district minibike club in Epping

Everytime I drive past that empty lot I get cranky...Just like Trailblazers,Pine Rivers,Redcliffe...List goes on & on. Bugger housing developments!

Tim,  I remember the Northern suburbs track it was down a back street behind the Village drive in theater in Reservoir, I did a couple of races there, it was like racing on the black market back then as they were not a VMBA affiliated club and we were "advised" not to race there but we did. All good fun....

Raced a honda Dax and SL70 at the Patterson Mini bike Rallies in 70,71. Didn't even need to belong to a club back then. Turned 14 in 72 and wanted to race the newly brought in sub-junior category for 14-16 yrs, before then you had to be 16 to enter an open meet as a C grader. Joined the Oaklieigh MCC as it was close to Bentleigh where I lived. Dad took me to my first meeting at an old building near the footy ground. Two meeting rooms full of men. One the OMCC the other AA, guess which one we picked. After a few minutes they probably worked out I was too young to be in AA (except for the bloke having a swig in the back corner) Oakleigh was a trials club back then except for Steve Cramer and Skppy Parsons who both rode for Athol Patterson. Eventually went to the Hartwell club, then the Speedway Motorcycle Riders Association as it was also a separate body. In the old days you also had to get a clearance from one club to join anoher. Used to practice at the sand track in Tulip St in Sandringham, or at the salt pans at Fishermans Bend or next to the VW factory in Centre Rd,Oakleigh. Much further to drive now to get a ride, except in Mackay where the MX track is righ next door to the CBD.
