Title: TL125 Engine Info
Post by: TT on August 23, 2010, 09:35:03 pm
Can anyone tell me whether TL125 top end parts will interchange with XL125, for example?
Or is the engine completely unique to the model?
Thanks in advance.  :)

I used a lot of SL/CB125 parts to rebuild a TL motor but I'm not sure how close the XL motor is.

That wasn't really much help was it? ::)

G'day Tony,
All early xl,sl, cb,ct ect. will interchange.
However early Tl gearboxes have a low 1st.gear
that will not fit non tl cases.
Regards,
von.

Well bugger me! Good to hear from you mate!  ;D

I thought it might be you with that name and Honda knowledge.

To introduce Von to everyone here: this bloke used to road race a KX250 which was weird enough, but he'd get it to meetings by pulling the front wheel out, dropping the front end into a sidecar and 'towing' it with another bike.  :D
I reckon AMCN even ran a shot of him doing that at one stage.

So, what are you riding these days mate?

I was only sounding surprised cause it felt like the right thing to do Tony..you were surprised, Von was surprised so I thought it only the right thing to do ;D

thanks for the guard btw, bit of a clean up and it'll do nicely I'm sure :)..a piece from here and a piece from there strung out over a period of 20 years means it's not been 1 of my hastiest projects but it'll be a goody 8)

Hey Tim.
I was bidding on a TL on eBay. But the engine was shot, hence the question about parts etc.
It ended up selling for more than I was willing to pay, so I didn't end up getting it.
I've played with the idea of turning one of my spare SP's into a trials bike because it would cost me essentially nothing to do. But I also think it might end up being worth nothing.  :D
I too would like a trials bike to bum around on. One day a cheap one will turn up.  ;)

How cool is Von's??  8)

Top end will interchange between XL-SL-CB-TL

The main difference in the TL is that it has larger diameter (not stroke) crank, to get a larger flwheel weight / effect. To do this the gearbox is rearranged so that the smaller main shaft gears are in the middle of the cluster to allow clearance for the crank. So you can't mix and match TL cranks with SL-XL gearboxes...I found the out this hard way at 11pm the night before a race :(

The other lesson I learned was that the TL has a close ratio 1st to 3rd gear then a massive gap to 4th and 5th, no good for VMX

The TL clutch is also different to the SL-XL, but they will interchange
