g'DAY Gents,
a question if i may, engine and gearbox parts still available for these? Gears ? big ends and main bearings? etc etc How fragile are these bikes?

The engines are based on the DT1/RT1 motors, although a lot of stuff is actually different.
This means that they're tough and you can substitute trailbike bits in if the genuine YZ parts aren't available.
Main bearings & seals are generic parts that are available at any bearing shop.
Don't know about the gears.

What are you hesitating for? ::) :o Go for it. You won't be disappointed from the ride or collectability POV. ;) 8)

All YZA only parts are very expensive....and not that common.....most people that have them hoard the parts....awesome bikes though...make sure bikes are near complete.....gearbox parts are hard to get and expensive.....worth the effort....go for it......get em back on the track.

thanks for the replies and info men. Its a lifeling ambition to own and ride one, I did race a YZA when they were new, but, AN 80CC ONE! Just love the look and i loved what they did on the track back then. What sort of $$ should a good 250 be? I know its had a some cosmetic work done, not sure about the engine which is the reason for the questions.

These days brand new gears/shafts can be easily made.

I still have that mx 250a gear cluster here with the dogged out 3rd sitting here, at the end of the day the cutting and retreating was too hard or too dear compared to the price of just buying the NOS one.
One off machining seems to be too pricey, unless its for some works resto... or a lot of them

Main bearings & seals are generic parts that are available at any bearing shop.
Some not all.... transmission shaft needle bearing is like rocking horse and the 24mm main bearing on the Dt1 are near extinct or bloody expensive and the Bearing places cant find any replacement maker so you have to figure out how to get into the 25mm pins.

Your memory must be failing you Freaky, I said it was far to hard for me to do. Very easy for the gearcutter he advertises in AMCN he under cuts dogs for $80, at the time this service was not available.

then you have to get them rehardned do you not so then add more coin to the $80.
Last yamaha 3rd i bougth was $65.
Maybe things have changed and its now easier, but still not cheap.

The gears are the problems on these bikes I think it's 5th that has the dogs for second to third I under cut mine and had them re harden, There fast and light but I dont like the way they steer all the weight is at the back of bike and the front forks flex badly.

I was always impressed in how well they were built, They were really factory bikes and in such were not made to last or be cheap to look after if you own one it is really the same as owning a RN or RH. Here is a pic of one of mine.

The right-hand gearchange would stuff me up but I could handle the left kicker!! (own a Husaberg)......must be hard getting bits for the left hand drive version.
