Title: CR 125 1975
Post by: AJ on August 02, 2010, 10:11:18 pm
hi,
Just picked up an almost complete CR125M 1975. Has great compression but no spark. I would like to get it running before pulling down for restoration. I will clean electrical conacts first. Is the CDi the first suspect in electrical problems for this model.?
Fuel tanks has surface rust, I will try the rocks & water abrasive solution. Any better advice?
Pipe has dents & holes, I have seen DG's in the US that look good, (I presume jetting changes would be needed) opinions appreciated.
Items missing are side covers, fuel tank cap & Air box. Any hints on locating these?
Thanks AJ

Hi AJ.
Air boxes are a hard find as they were generally thrown away being restrictive. I have a second hand fuel cap $20 plus post.
Side covers can be bought from Darren I would expect http://ozvmx.com/community/index.php?topic=13967.0
I am pretty sure a phosphoric acid is used to clean tanks . Maybe that rust converter would be the go as well.
With the electrical problem, make sure the easy things are checked first. Plug, cap, make sure the cap is screwed into the coil lead, make sure the CDI is earthed. After that I would be taking some readings from the stator windings. Always good if you can find someone else in your area with one to swap bits.
DG pipes are good but a little loud. I have one on my '74.
Where do you reside?

I know GMC makes one for the '77 cr125. Not sure if it will fit the early frame.
They are all CDI unlike the 250.

I forgot to mention the frame loop over the rear guard has been snapped off. I would appreciate it if someone could give the measurements to replace it.
thanks,
AJ

Hi Rboert,
I have bought a tester, if I get no joy it would be great if you can swap parts from a runner to find the problem. I'm at Ashtonfield.
It would be great to see your bike anyway.
thanks AJ 0408437480.

Freaky,
Yes, Steve McQueen loved his bikes more than his acting.
