G'day viewers I have been offered a 1977/78 DT250. Would this be okay for vinduro or to heavy and gutless ? :-\ I have the early DT250 twin shock model and they look good but the pic's I've seen of the 77 model the bike looks lumpy I haven't seen the bike yet ::) so before I go ahead whats the go on the 77 model. jimson

They're very heavy, but a lot of the weight is easy to get rid of.
Not a sexy bike, but they've got more suspension than the twin shock models and are still DT reliable.

Nathan would a plastic tank off the same year YZ fit same with gaurds .jimson

Not sure about plastic tank. You can put in the YZ or IT gear set! Most of the internals are interchangable with the racer models. Clutch cover is different (Autolube) but again YZ or IT fit.
You could put some better forks and triple clamp. Loose some weight around the bike. Put some good tires on it and have fun.
They are plain reliable and with some simple bits removed, changed or added, just as much fun as that DT1!

Once you go to the expense of plastic tanks and suspension upgrades, you'd might as well look around for a IT250F/G or a PE250N/T. Just keep it as it is, DT250! They're good softcore trailbikes!

Well I've pushed the rust bucket up the side of the house and walked away. :'( Why do I buy this sh#t for :-[ could someone tell me if this 77 DT250 is points or CDI and if it is CDI should it be a straight swapover to a DT1 250 I can't look at it until I think its got something I want need. jimson

Should be a cdi unit dont know about the swap for earlyer model.

I've never gotten my head around which of the monoshock DT250s had CDIs and which had points - AFAIK, you've just gotta check.
If its a CDI one, then it will go straight into your DT1.

yes indeediedoo Jimson, and say goodbye to "kickback" from that nasty DT1 kick lever forever....... ;)
you'll just need a few zip ties and some creative placing for the CDI box.

Its got points >:( no CDI the frame is rusted beyond repair but it has a full wire loom and the front forks might be okay the carbie looks small for a 250 and the front wheel is round instead off square like the back so I've got spares for the money I spent :-\ jimson

Because it allways seems like a good idea at the time.
I had a 77 400 that I bought new. It was a horrible dog of a thing, it was one bike I always considered a lemon.
The 77 400 was the first of the monoshocks and mine had CDI, I would have thought the 250 would have had CDI as well, maybe someone fitted it up with an old system sometime in its life.
