You'll be ok,is that a 500 engine? if so the biggest issue will be  a rod,if its a 465; rods are still available ex suzuki pretty much everything else is easy to buy via Ebay or Suzuki.
Enjoy i'm jealous!

Allison - don't hesitate to chase Suzuki - you will be surprised how much is still available NOS and how low the price is - sprocket covers still available for instance plus a lot of the plastics.

Craig - wasn't it Steve Hunter you put me onto in Melbourne?  What shop was it?  Their service was excellent and they didn't mind chasing old bits for me.  Quick supply and delivery.

cheers

Yeah Craig bought the NOS stuff and I bought all the stuff that needed a million $$$$ spending on it, not much left really.

However quite a few parts are shared with the 250. Or from Vintage Suzuki/

Jeff, yes I am afraid the Honda now moves to the back of the project list, this sweet little 500 is my new baby.
Its back to my original plan to build a Goof Mr Motocross special,I have the adjustable struts, twin air airbox and tmv sidepanels so it should come up very nice.I will get the NZ guru Mike Felton to assist my efforts, the  bike should hit NZ mid September I will be trying to have her ready for the beginning of 2011.
Ahh gotta love Suzukis!!
CMD get back down your mine shaft boy!

I think of the old air hammer 2 stroke 500s the RM5 had the best power. I agree with the magazine articles of the day that said it was like a grunty 250. Due to them being a 4 speed a lot were 'geared up' like road racers but I think the stock gearing really shows off what a great motor it has.

old riding friend of mine rode a 4 day on one , so Mario they can be used as an enduro bike as well  ::)
Title: Re: Project pre85
Post by: monaro308 on July 29, 2010, 05:10:52 pm
Maybe you are right Marc, i had my 175 back then and had a go on a 500 and it was a handful for me.
Then coming back on a 450F after 20 odd years i thought no big deal.
Maybe i might taste a 4-500cc 2 banger again oneday and relive what i thought was holy shit how do they ride these things?
A set of stickers on Suzi43's 500 and it would be a ball tearer looking bike....love the stance of those bikes.
Title: Re: Project pre85
Post by: Marc.com on July 29, 2010, 05:19:59 pm
Always fancied one with the PE tank and plastics, PE500E would be pretty cool.

But unless you have Geboers or Lackey as a surname you are probably just as well off on the 250.
Title: Re: Project pre85
Post by: Rossvickicampbell on July 29, 2010, 05:33:38 pm
Marc - I don't think anyway could disagree with the fact they would be faster on a 250  ;D  but to quote the HSV slogan - "I just want one".

I heard that the Zook had shit suspension, the Yamaha pinged itself to death, Hondas were good but everybody has one - how did the Kwaka compare?

Rossco
Title: Re: Project pre85
Post by: BAHNZY on July 29, 2010, 07:03:46 pm

how did the Kwaka compare?

Unless your name (in Australia) was Trevor Williams, they were shite.
- Suspension that went soft in 2 laps.
- A front disc that was beyond the twin leading of the time.
- Cracking frames.
- Reasonable power was a good point.

But they looked different and are way cool in todays world.
Title: Re: Project pre85
Post by: Rossvickicampbell on July 29, 2010, 07:52:00 pm
sounds a bit like me - "went soft in 2 laps"  ;D  Did you mean "behind" with regards the brake?  Cracking frames is a worry though?
Title: Re: Project pre85
Post by: suzuki43 on July 29, 2010, 09:23:42 pm
Sounds like you CMD-'looks different',but I am afraid you definitely are not way cool!
Dont know how you heard the RM500 suspension was crap,by all the literature I have read, the full floater was the best of all time.
Then again, since when did you know anything Rossco  ;)
Title: Re: Project pre85
Post by: Marc.com on July 29, 2010, 10:02:09 pm

I heard that the Zook had shit suspension,

Rossco

Oh no, the Suzuki had the best out there with the Full Floater and 43mm forks that were as good as any conventional forks produced and better than most. Kawasaki as mentioned was pretty bad normally due to weird springs and falling rate design, early Pro llnk was abysmal but came right with the RC 480, no idea what Yamaha were trying to do, half dump the Monocross for something worse.

Craigy - I shall treat your comment with the contempt it deserves as most normal people don't listen to you anyway.  Now I actually can't remember where I saw it or heard it but yes around 82 the Full Floater was by far the best but come 1984 the others had caught up and in particular the 500 was the worst because so little development had gone into it - sorry maybe should of added was talking about the rear end!!

As I said Craig, when you had one of those moments where somebody could actually converse with you  ;D, having a bit of a look at 84 500's - yep (like me  :o) the Kwaka looks way cool but thought the Zook pulled up short in the bike to have!

Naaahhhhh!!!!

luv

Title: Re: Project pre85
Post by: suzuki43 on August 18, 2010, 07:58:32 pm
Hi Allison, the 465 and 500 rears should be the same I think the fronts are also the same just the front backing plates will differ.
Title: Re: Project pre85
Post by: Scunge on August 18, 2010, 08:51:04 pm
I have a feeling that the rear hubs/backing plates could be different on the 465 and 500. I have a 500 D hub on my 465 and I think, memory bad, that the backing plate for the 500 hub is larger, and hence stronger than the flimsy 465 one.

Journey of knowledge-house-shed-house-shed-house  ;D
The two wheels we have ,the backing plate needs to be slightly less than 148 mills diameter.Do you think they maybe are 250 backwheels ??

Post by: D project on August 24, 2010, 09:47:32 pm
465/500 Hubs the same. They changed the brake baking plate on the 500 to a flush fit to make it a bit more waterproof and the 465 sat more inside the hub. 250 hubs the same as the 125 which are smaller looking.

PRESS STOP: Always take engine and frame #'s with you when purchasing bikes-250 "N" has now become a "T"
Spotted the difference last night in vmx mag #14 and confirmed via vintage suzuki.com RM ID #'s ,though not too much difference. :(

If you are comparing N / T Rm 125 motors  yes they are different in clutch cover ( screw pattern ) most noticable .....  Crank cases also  ;) will not interchange.
