Title: Triple tree stem extension
Post by: jimson on July 15, 2010, 08:48:06 pm
G'day viewers I need my stem to be longer  :-[ so I thought about making a shaft to slide down inside the stem to reinforce it to the length I need and then cut the stem in the middle and pull it apart to the size I need and then weld the stem to the shaft  :o well is this as clear as mud  :-\  jimson

why not get a new shaft machined it's got to be way stronger and every thing stays in alignment too

What's the shaft for Jimson?

When I did my XT500's I found the shaft from Yamaha YZ/IT triples was was too short and Suzuki too long. I used Suzuki shafts and shortened them. I ran the bearing surface further down, chased the thread a bit longer cut the weld holding the nut in place, shortened the end of the shaft and rewelded the nut.
Easier than it sounds!

Brent

PS Yamaha and Suzuki shafts interchange on YZ, IT, PE & RM. Honda are different

Me too. So I've been told. :-[

I once extended a steering stem by welding in a sleeved extension when I fitted CZ forks and triple clamps to a Bultaco M11 Metisse. At the time I was a DLI certificated pressure vessel welder and also had a number of other welding qualifications yet I never felt at totally ease knowing that the stem was welded so I ended up machining a new one to suit from a longer Yamaha stem of some sort. My advise is to make a new one or search the wreckers for one that suits. Welding is a no no no matter how good a job you think you did.
