Title: It looked better on eBay.
Post by: All Things 414 on July 05, 2010, 08:09:49 pm
Actually it didn't. It looked how it looks here. Shithouse. :(. But I had to get one. You see at the start of 1982 I had a spankin' brand new KX80D2. I was so proud of it with it's long legs and cool lines. It's little number plates on the rear guard. It was so trick.....
But that year Yamaha released the YZ80J,thefirst water-cooled 80. My dream of green was shattered. These little YZ's were so fast, handled so well and on a starting gate of 25 bikes, 22 of them would be YZ 80's. The KX probably wouldn't have been that bad but I was totally phsyc'ed out by the YZ.
I was green with envy however.... >:(

As stated before I would still like a KX80D2 but as we all know Kawasaki's are made by alians and there's no way I'm gunna try and restore one. I'll just buy one that's already done.

Which brings me to this beast. It's good points are:
It was cheap ($150)
The YEIS bottle is still there
and that's about it

It's drawbacks are:
It's locked solid
Where the watercooling runs through the headstem has been mangled and they've by-passed it.
The mounting for the radiator went south about 20 yrs ago. and....
Everything else is pretty much crap! :P

So now that the VE is only waitng on parts, it's time to make a start on this. ;)

Gday Ross, What do you mean made by Aliens? Is it because they were so far advanced compared to other brands ;D ;D ;D
The best parts I can see on that little "J" are the Kawasaki guards :D :D :D

Regards Stan.

What's the prefix Ross? There's almost sure to be a frame amongst the pile in the back yard. Yours if you want it, if it's there of course.
Cheers,
K

it is off a yamaha though looks like a gt80 style alot of smaller yamaha's had that kicker aslong as it hasn't been welded on it would be ok easy to get off and get a correct one.

Thanks Michael but KB's already offered up another frame for me. There seems to be plenty of them about. Thanks all the same.
Certainly do Stan. Bumped into another quick 80 J rider the other day. Gary Eason (the Euro car guy now) or "Mouse" as he was known then. I think every week I run into someone who had one.
Yeah nice stuff Mario. I'd be very interested in turning this into something 'special'. If anyone has some trick stuff let me know please.... :)

I hope this doesn't turn into a repeat of the 465 resto / stack / hospital trip ;D

I remember seeing these things lined up outside the local dealer when I was 12, they were trick looking things. Now you've got me thinking about picking something up to restore for when the young'n is old enough ::) ;D

Ah the YZ80J.  I never did get myself one of them as I was too old and too big.  But I did have the YZ125J and I did get hosed off by some fast kids at a club day at Connondale on their YZ 80s.  From memory that could have been Tam and Ben Paul.

Funnily enough, if you look around and talk to people, there must have been millions of then made as so many people owned one or more over the years.  They are so legendary that you often see YZ80s from the mid 70s to the late 80s advertised as YZ80Js.

I guess they had their faults, buy how popular were they back then!  Enjoy the project.

a mate bought one as an old dunger in about 86' or so.
when he gave me a ride on the then clapped out YZ80J i didn't want to get off it.
it reved to the moon and flat flew. ;D
seemed for years after that bike, the YZ80J, the not so switched on crowd refered to every YZ80 as a "J".
cool bikes.

Wow, never thought I'd see one of these again.  My old man bought me one back in 1987!  It was a great little bike.

I thought it was fast until I jumped on an '86 RM80....  :o

This is where my k engine is at the moment, spent a month sorting and fitting it on my kart with out modifying the frame so i can put it back to a sprint kart.
Took it out once, with a powerband spread of about 2000rpm my right hand never touched the steering wheel  ;D packed it away and tied it up to the roof of my shed....needed the room!

Hey Stan. I like it a lot! How come I have to pay through the nose for everything?  :-\

That was a nice KX Jason. I never realized how much the '79 looked like its bigger brothers. And that little RM is very nice Doc..... ;)

I am coming to the realization that old Jap stuff is as much a pain in the arse as my Monties. Example? I can still buy gaskets for a bike that they only produced 337 of in 1980
(VF 414) but I cant get gaskets for a bike that they produced about 10 zilliion of in 1982 (YZ 80 J) >:( ??? ::)

Yeah. It's ah....er.....umm...........photoshopped? :-\

No photoshop (as I wouldn't know how anyway) it is fitted with a CR125M or M1 engine, beleive it or not.
Actually "fitted" is being very kind to ever put that engine in, butchered would be more acurate. In saying that the guy that gave it to me said it was a good goer when he first got it. My problem is I would like to know what model CR125M that the engine is out of. Can anyone tell me an easy way to tell as the engine number is only partially there thanks to some chain damage. It starts with CR125. Bike is an YZ80F I think. Frame number starts with 2X6.

Stan.

Take the head off, count the ports. 8 ports = CR125M, 9 ports = CR125M1.

Thanks bigk, If you count the bridged inlet port as 2 and the bridged exhaust port as 2 then add the 4 transfer ports = 8. So It must be a CR125M?

Can`t handle the grunt Hoony,
that crash at Wonthaggi was a result of the first time the Nimmo grabbed 3rd gear and look what happened. He could be scarred for ever.  :)

I new a fellow that had a yz 80 frame, and the engine mounted in it was a 250 pursang motor, and it was amazing to ride.
